My friend wants to start collecting manga and came to me for advice since I am the only one who he knows that is into anime, however I know next to nothing about manga so I came here for help.

My friend is more into stuff that is action driven over story driven... I would suggest naruto but he is planning to buy the dvds when they come out since it got licensed...

Samurai Deeper Kyo would be an excellent choice, in my opinion. It's got a great story that is strung throughout with fascinating fights and intrigue. It's well worth your friend's time and money. It's kinda long, but it uses every page to its advantage.

Any shonen series (One Piece, Shaman King, Yuyu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, are all excellent shonen manga) would probably suffice. Though you might want to get Naruto for him anyway, as the manga is much better than the anime, both stylistically and story-wise (in my opinion), Rave Master is also a pretty good bet, taking your typical "spiky-haired teenage hero must find his lost father while collecting magical gems and defeating the bad guys" storyline and turning it into something more as it goes on. And Flame of Recca is a great, commonly overlooked one, taking Naruto's theme (shinobi) and combining it with Yuyu Hakusho's atmosphere, with unique elements of its own.

Chrono Crusade has a little of everything. Action, humor, but most of all, a gun-totting nun with a demon sidekick. Needless to say, Joe likey very much, perhaps Rendart's friend may too.

I would also recommand Bleach, it is only on it's 5 GN so far but so far I find it full of action, plot twists, and different developments. I also agree with many of the already mention title's Samurai Deeper Kyo, One Piece, Naruto.

I second Joe Arizona's suggestion of Chrono Crusade. The book has a great mix of humor, action, and suspense, just like the equally awesome anime.

Rendart, if your friend is looking for action with a little bit of wackiness, then I would suggest he should try Excel Saga. The characters are a bit hyperactive (but tamer than the anime), but they are fun to read.

Berserk. Very action driven, with a very intriguing anti-hero. If he likes medieval themes he'll love it.

I suppose Rurouni Kenshin would fit the bill. Well done action wise, with plenty of it, and after about 7 volumes the story becomes quite good as well. Bleach would also quality for a good action manga, though the story isn't as solid as Rurouni Kenshin.
If he's into older, more mature stuff, Berserk is an exellent choice. Mindless violence initially, then the exellent main story kicks in about volume four. Even with an epic story, facinating world and solid characters, the manga doesn't sacrifice the high level of violence.

I suggest Hyper Police. It has a bit of action and comedy.
