Hey, did naybody read the Review for G Gundam on IGN.com? First off, is the show really as good as the guy makes it out to be (Okay, I know it is on Cable, but I just do not have the time to set the VCR and record it). Second, I heard that the English dub track on the DVD is edited, is this true too?

well i dunno about the dub being edited, but i do know that the show is really good. it's a lot better than gundam wing, and it's not your typical gundam show. but it's good. i hope the dub ain't edited..

Yeah, it is. There's always the sub though, which I'm sure is a lot better. The first 3 DVDs come out on November 5th, as a box set or as 3 seperate DVDs. |

The version of the G Gundam dub that is shown on Cartoon Network is indeed edited. I have very limited knowledge of the original G Gundam storyline, but I know for a fact that some of the Gundam names were changed to make seem friendlier (Ex: Tequila Gundam = Spike Gundam, John Bull Gundam = Royal Gundam, Devil Gundam = Dark Gundam, Nobel Gundam = Noble Gundam [that last one is probably due to poor translation though]) and the insert song from episode called "In My Dreams" was replaced with the traditional American patriotic ballad "America The Beautiful". I don't know for sure about the dub that will be on the DVDs, but I'm guessing from Bandai's convention announcements that they will be exactly the same as the televised episodes, and that the subtitled version will be the uncut version.
As for G Gundam being "as good as the guy makes it out to be"... I haven't seen the review, so I don't know how good the guy makes the series out to be. However, I can tell you for a fact that how much you like the series will depend on your expectations and how much you like fighting anime. G Gundam is not like any of the other Gundam stories that have been told so far. Instead of being a wartime drama like almosyt all of the other Gundam series', G Gundam focuses on tournament style combat similar to DBZ or Street Fighter, except with giant robots. The struggle against the Devil Gundam creates underlying drama that surfaces at several key points in the series, but most of the action involves enemy-of-the-day style competion, martial arts, and super attacks. If you watch G Gundam expecting to see the pretty boys and introvert philosophy of Gundam Wing [or the original series, or whatever] you WILL be sorely disappointed. Actually, for just that reason, a lot of hardcore Gundam fans consider G Gundam to be nothing but marketing fodder, and the first in a long line of travesties that tarnish Gundam's once-good name. I personally rather like the campy stylishness of it, and I see some value in the fact that they chose to depart from the same basic plot formula that the Universal Century series have repeated since the original series made it popular back in the early 80s. But I'm just odd like that. |

the gundam fights take place of war...at leats, this is what i gathered from yesterday's episodes. i mean, become the champion, and your country rules for 4 years. it is a form of war. it still cause destruction, and the end result is power.
i am also one of the people who like this series...i was just currently in an argument about the series with one of my wc3 clan members. anyways...just thought i'd post that |

That's true, but that only comes into the foreground in a handful of episodes. Most of the episodes culminate in Street Fighter-esque Nation vs. Nation super martial arts. And when you get the the end of the series where they face the Devil Gundam's forces headon, it seems more like a battle against a generic fighting anime "Boss" character than anything else. It boils down to Hero vs Giant Ugly Monster, and the ending is no more surprising nor moving than the end of a season of Dragonball Z. G Gundam isn't altogether a bad series, as I said. Actually, I think it does a very good job of blending elements of traditional fighting anime with many of Gundam's signature storytelling conventions. However, the basic plot really isn't at all like most of the other Gundam stories. People who go into it expecting to see a war drama along the lines of the original Mobile Suit Gundam are unhappy the series more often than not. |

The Street Fighter 2/DBZ type might be interesting. I did do some reading up on it awhile back (back when Gundam Project used to be up). Does anyone know when the season will begin its second run (I imagine the first run is not completed), that way I can record and save money by not buying the DVD's since dub track will remain edited. AND on that note, let me say I am disappointed with Bandai editing the dub on the DVD. I understand CN's stance for it's programing and that is fine, BUT I think Bandai should make an unedited dub track for their DVD releases.

Er, "Hell Gundam"? Is there even such a sing? I've never heard of him in the japanese listing, maybe a misquote of Devil Gundam? Sure hope so, hate to see the "correct" names be misstranslated. Emerje |

I haven't actually watched G-Gundam yet, but this piece of the IGN review is hilarious:

"It is arguable that it is the greatest giant robot series that will ever be." Er, uh, well, it was a good series and all, but that's saying a lot. I can think of several titles that I liked a lot more like Nadesico, Getter Robo, Voltron, Macross, Dual, Mazinkaizer, Eva, Vandread, everything else with a Gundam logo on it.
I think IGN should start doing random drug tests... Emerje |

The 08th MS Team, Wing, Endless Waltz, X, and 0083 are all a lot worse than G Gundam. |

08th ms team was good! but i think they're about equal in my book. but yeah, gundam wing (blaahg) was just...a reason for yaoi fan girls to waste hours of their time watching and writing and wuutnot. but yeah, i mean, vandread is awesome, and a lot better than g gundam. but then again, this may be one of them people who only watch t.v. anime. this isn't to say that t.v. anime isn't good, cause it is. mmm bebop...
i really don't like that tokyopop manga. it's just...really badly drawn. |

Has G Gundam's release schedule changed?
...Or have I, maybe, had the wrong schedule in my head all along? I thought they had announced that the series was going to be released in three boxsets of three DVDs each - nine DVDs total - and that those same nine discs would be available as individual volumes. But I go looking though Bandai's website for that stuff today, because there is a certain disc I'm waiting to buy, and I discover that Round 9 only goes up to episode 36... and Box Set 2 only goes up though episode 24, which means that Box Set three can't possibly end anywhere near the end of the series. If Bandai's website is correct, then Round 8 is going to be the disc I'm waiting for and I have no worries on that end. But that leaves a bigger question unanswered: What is to happen to the rest of the series? Is their website incorrect, were their press releases mistaken, or did I just misunderstand them? |
