I recently bought a manga by Viz Media Signature and I just learned that there's also a version by Viz Media. I was wondering what the difference was in terms of content and dialogue. Has anyone read a manga in both versions?

Uh, I'm somewhat confused here, but I think you're asking if there's a difference between a Viz Media Signature manga and Viz Media.

Signature is basically one of the lines under the Viz Media manga printing line, others include Shonen Jump, Shonen Jump Advanced, Shojo Beat, Shonen Sunday, and Viz Kids. All of these are published by the same company, Viz Media, and are used to indicate genre for the most part. The Signature line tends to publish seinen, josei, and stuff that doesn't really fit into anywhere else.

Now, if you're talking about a re-print of some of their older manga, for example Maison Ikkoku, the 2nd printing of it put everything in the correct order, didn't flip it, and made it a lot more obvious which volume was which by actually putting numbers on them instead of giving them difficult to guess when this takes place subtitles. The first run also published it in 14 volumes and the second run (which was published under the "Editor's Choice", now Signature, line) was 15 volumes. The two print runs of Maison Ikkoku are pretty different, they have the same content, but the way they're published and the flipped vs unflipped are different.

It might make more sense if you gave us a specific title that you were talking about here if what I said wasn't quite what you were looking for.

It was Black Lagoon. I got the one by Viz Signature but I recently learned that there was also one by Viz Media. Was just wondering what the differences are in terms of content.

I doubt there's any difference except maybe the logo on the side (they've been trying to figure out what they like to be their sig logo lately). When they run a reprint for a single volume as of late (not a complete overhaul of the series, they tend not to do that as much anymore anyway), they'll usually only change the logos to match what their current ones are.
They'll usually print "Viz Media" at the bottom of the spine and whatever line it belongs to at the top of spine, but it's all published by Viz Media.

Viz Signature is bigger and higher quality than regular Viz manga.

You're probably thinking of VizBig, which are oversized omnibus editions they release for their big Shonen franchises. Viz Signature is just the brand under which they publish their prestige titles.

I think he's just pointing out that all of the recent Signature releases have been a bigger size and on better quality paper.

That wasn't always the case though, so there are older titles under the Signature imprint with a lower price, smaller trim and crappier paper.

Not sure what any of this has to do with Black Lagoon though - as far as I know it hasn't had a format change and it hasn't moved imprints. Like classicalzawa said, all that's changed is the Signature logo.

Black Lagoon started out as ordinary Viz Media series with a the Big V logo on the spine, but it was also the larger size with better paper quality usually associated with Viz Sig (also, same pricing). But about half way through they (Viz) decided that 'Hey, since we're already treating this title like it was a Viz Sig book, why not just make it part of Viz Sig?' So they did. Basically the only difference is the spine Logo branding. That is IT. I imagine any follow up reprints of the first 5 or 6 volumes will be rebranded as Viz Sig.

Viz Sig is the line of books that are generally for more mature audiences, and Viz Media is for 'tweens. So it makes sense for Black Lagoon to belong there in the first place.

I think that their initial rationale for putting Black Lagoon in their regular line was that unlike the Editor's Choice line, the Signature line was meant to be used for works that aren't just mature, but "refined" (for lack of a better term) as well. Black Lagoon isn't necessarily a title that would fit with the (initial) scope of the line.

Guess they changed their minds on that. Not that it really matters in the grand scheme of things.

VizBig actually isn't only for their major Shonen manga. Viz is publishing "Vagabond" in the over-sized omnibus editions currently.

I'm pretty sure they've started doing so with one of the Shojo Beat manga series as well (not sure which one)

I know for certain that Fushigi Yuugi and Hot Gimmick are both available in VizBig editions. I'm not sure if there are any others at the moment.

I know it's not Shojo Beat, but Inuyasha is another non-SJ title getting the VizBig treatment.

As others have said Viz Signature is just a branch of the Viz Media company. This is basically a line which provides manga that are usually in the Seinen or Josei genre. This means that they tend to be targeted towards a more mature audience. But these series tend to not sell as well as your typical shonen series like Bleach or Naruto. So Viz uses this line to use some of the money they get from their more popular products to fund their efforts to bring over less popular series in this high quality line. Honestly this is the only use I get out of Viz Media, I'm glad they're sticking they're necks out for these amazing titles like Pluto and 20th Century Boys.
