I absolutely love K-20, but I'm still pissed at Viz for refusing to release it on bluray.

Woo hoo. I've been waiting for almost 3 years to own Naruto Shippuuden #26 in a boxset.

Looks like this Is another of the Twenty Faces stories like the one that inspired the anime "Daughter of Twenty Faces" a couple years back. In the anime TF is portrayed as more of a Robin-Hood style thief trying to make amends for his participation in wartime crimes. But the little I know of the novels by Edogawa Rampo suggested that TF was the villain and the detective Akechi the hero.

Is this related at all to the movie reviewed by Andrew Cunningham in this posting?

Niju Menso (aka: The Fiend of Twenty Faces, or just Twenty Faces) is an old "villain" in the Detective Akechi novels by Edogawa Rampo (one of the names that inspired Detective Conan or Case Closed as it's known here). The main character of the novels is detective Akechi, the Japanese Sherlock Holmes, I suppose you could say. Niju Menso (I'll just call him K-20 necause of the Kaijin Niju Menso name) was both his greatest rival and best friend, because both of them had the greatest respect for one another, despite Akechi trying to catch him.

The movie K-20 actually made many Japanese angry because of the twist ending that was almost an insult to the original story, however, I saw it as brilliant and love the movie. I saw it at an Asian Film Festival here in Dallas where I live. K-20 usualy does wear a mask in the novels, but hose are literally other faces. The movie does give him a mask, but keeps it recognizable and consistant, and very Westernized.

Now, the anime, Daughter of Twenty Faces, was quite a bit more accurate to the novels, but it, too, took creative licenses on his character. They even (as the title suggests) made the main character K-20's adoptive daughter. My problem with the anime was that it moved from an awesome anime about K-20 and turned it into a cutesy "detective girls" show.

Now, as I've stated about Viz, they have flat out told me in an e-mail I sent through their site, that K-20 will not be released on bluray, nor will any of their movies (Death Note, 20th Century Boys, etc) hit bluray because "there is not enough demand for it". Considering nowadays, many people (like me) see dvd as a downgrade, this really isn't smart.

If people enjoy this movie, or any of Viz Pictures releases, I'd suggest sending them an e-mail expressing that concern as I have, because at this rate, Viz will just keep pumping out second rate quality dvd releases that you can't find anywhere but online, like they are now.
