I know Tenchi Muyo isn't exactly new, but I recently watched the first 2 DVDs of the OVA series, and now I want to know what you all think.

1) Do you like Tenchi Muyo?Or used to like it? (Only post if you like Tenchi Muyo, and if you used to like it, please explain why and DON'T CRITICIZE ANYONE ELSE FOR LIKING IT EVEN IF YOU MOVED ON). Did the whole harem thing get on your nerves? Was Tenchi too much of a loser to have all these girls devoted to him? Give a good reason if you used to like Tenchi Muyo and decided to post. If you have no answer for a question, please put N/A. Please answer the questions in order.

2) Who is your favorite character?

3) Is there a character who annoys you?

4) Whether you like Tenchi Muyo or used to like it, was there a particular thing that annoyed you?

5) Did you read the manga side stories?

6) Did you see Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, Pretty Sammy, Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki and/ Tenchi Muyo GXP?

Feel free to copy and paste the questions.

I'll start.

1) Yes, I like Tenchi Muyo.

2) My favorite character would have to be Washu and Kagato. He was such a good villain.

3) Not particularly, but sometimes Ayeka can be a, well, spoiled princess, and Sasami can be a little too cute. Ryoko comes on to strong sometimes. Other than that, I can't really say they annoy me much, because I do like them. They're just a little flawed in that sense.

4) spoiler[Kagato died too quickly it seemed.] It was still the beginning of the anime, and he was defeated so soon. It just seemed that way to me. The episode after the defeat of Kagato was good, it just seemed too soon for the villain to go.

5) I read the first volume of No Need For Tenchi, but I never continued with the manga. If it's not the source for the anime, I don't read it.

6) I saw Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo. Tenchi Universe was good, Tenchi in Tokyo-what did they do?

...you know it's kind of weird to say I watched a harem series as a kid (back then, I didn't even know what it was) but I still fairly enjoyed it.

1) Of course I liked it. Though I did find it odd that Tenchi was living with....so many women o__o; It was the first time I had exposure to the genre so everything was up in the air for me. I thought Tenchi was a pretty cool guy Cool

2) Ryoko. She was a kickass space pirate.

3) Ayeka. Didn't help much that I watched the dub & hearing her voice was like scraping your nails against a chalk board. She bickers too much & she's nosy.

4) If I remember correctly, the ending was open-ended. And I didn't like that :[ It was such a long time ago...

5)Nope

6) I've only seen Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Universe & Tenchi in Tokyo as well. It seemed like alot of people hated the Tokyo arc but I personally liked it because it seemed the funniest out of the bunch even though there was alot of OOC in it.

Ah, good old Tenchi. I can still remember watching this on Toonami, the good old days. Cool

1) I love Tenchi Muyo, yeah. Honestly, it used to be in my top ten favorite series/franchise, but I don't know if I still rank it that high or not. It's been a while since I've re-ranked favorites, so I really can't say much beyond my top 3 or 4. The harem thing didn't get on my nerves, it made it unique to me, back in the days when I was really only watching like DBZ, YYH, and Digimon and the like - it made Tenchi stand out even more. Tenchi was a bit of a loser, but that just makes him the underdog, you root for him - even if he does have more than his fair share of anime hotties.

2) Hard to say...it's a tossup between Ryoko, Mihoshi, and Tenchi's dad. Though I had a bit of a crush on Sasami when I was younger.

3) Even though she's one of my faves, Mihoshi does at times. Washu's voice (dub) has been known to do that too.

4) Back when I first watched it, no. But for the franchise as a whole, it's the ending of the newest set of episodes for the OVA continuity, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki! - they just...ugh. spoiler[They completely ruin the character of Tenchi's mother.] It disgusts me.

5) No, but I'd love to one day.

6) I've seen Universe, in Tokyo, Ryo-Ohki!, and even the Mihoshi special, but I've yet to see anything else. Unless Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventures counts, since that's KINDA connected to Tenchi from what I understand, I have seen some of it. I'm really interested in seeing the new thing to, Isekai no Seikeshi Monogatari.

1. Used to love it. Haven't watched it again in years though so I'm not sure how I would feel about it upon a re-watch. It was probably my first harem anime since I had only started get into the anime craze back then so the harem issue didn't really bother me one way or the other. As far as why I liked it, I generally enjoyed the whole cast. Just a fun, interesting bunch of characters to go along with a few interesting stories.

2. Ryoko with Tenchi and Yosho not too far behind.

3. Ayeka was probably the character who annoyed me the most, but that sort is to be expected coming from a Ryoko fan. Other than her feud with Ryoko she never bothered me too much.

4. The OVA from a few years ago that continued the story. Just generally disappointing as it felt rushed and introduced a bunch of new characters that they didn't really have the time to go in depth into.

5. Nope, never really looked beyond the anime. Are any of the manga stories worthwhile?

6. Watched all of those except Pretty Sammy. Also currently watching the Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari ova.

1) Do you like Tenchi Muyo?Or used to like it?

I LOVE Tenchi Muyo! I own ALL of it on DVD!

2) Who is your favorite character?

Kiyone from Universe

3) Is there a character who annoys you?

Nope

4) Whether you like Tenchi Muyo or used to like it, was there a particular thing that annoyed you?

The only part that annoyed me, is that scene when they resurect the guardians, and there is all that strobe effect.
Also some of the "inconsistancies" in the various series do cause some confusion.

5) Did you read the manga side stories?

Yes

6) Did you see Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, Pretty Sammy, Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki and/ Tenchi Muyo GXP?

Yes, and I own them all. I also own the Dual: Parallel Trouble Adventure series as well. I also own all the Tenchi movies as well.
I don't have the manga series anymore, but I used to.
Whenever the next series comes out, I am planning to get it as well (when it is licensed in the USA).

1) Do you like Tenchi Muyo?Or used to like it?
I liked it back when it was on Toonami, and I own most of the franchise on DVD today.

2) Who is your favorite character?
That's a toughie... good guys: tied between Ryoko and Ayeka. Bad guys: Kagato (from either OVA or Universe, he's bad-ass)

3) Is there a character who annoys you?
Mihoshi from the OVA; her dumbness goes too far at times. Luckily, they gave her the counter-weight of Kiyone in Universe, thus fixing that problem.
And this leads into what I thought the series did an excellent job at; making sure its characters acted as counter balances with each other, keeping the characters' ticks and antics in check while at the same time being important to the series. Ayeka and Ryoko were the perfect example of this strength.

4) Whether you like Tenchi Muyo or used to like it, was there a particular thing that annoyed you?
The Tokyo series. Everything about that was incredibly bad. The characters were mutilated, the comedy was bunk, the action sucked, everything was bad...

5) Did you read the manga side stories?
No, and I don't really intend to.

6) Did you see Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, Pretty Sammy, Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki and/ Tenchi Muyo GXP?
I've seen and own all but the Mihoshi specials and Pretty Sammy. I also own the three movies; In Love 1 & 2, and Daughter of Darkness, all of which are great flicks.

Not really. They're side stories, so they have nothing to do with any of the Tenchi incarnations. I wouldn't wast time on them. They're out of print and like I said, they have nothing to do with the Tenchi incarnations. They're basically short stories.

I totally agree! I love Kagato. It's too bad spoiler[he died in episode 6.] It seemed too soon for the villain to go!

1) Do you like Tenchi Muyo?Or used to like it?
Like it? yeah, I still consider it one of my all time favorites.
2) Who is your favorite character?
The first time I saw it, I'd have to say Sasami/Tsunami, but after viewing it again, along with all the other Tenchi related series I saw myself leaning towards Ryoko.
3) Is there a character who annoys you?
Not really, they all have stuff that one could find annoying, but not enough for me to outright loathe any appearance of theirs in the series.
4) Whether you like Tenchi Muyo or used to like it, was there a particular thing that annoyed you?
From what I've seen, I'd have to say without question the last episode of the 3rd OVA. Without spoiling things, it makes me wish she was more like Achika from the first movie rather than what they turned her into in the end.
5) Did you read the manga side stories?
I have the first 5 issues of No Need for Tenchi, but I never found it interesting enough to go back and finish.
6) Did you see Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, Pretty Sammy, Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki and/ Tenchi Muyo GXP?
That's a yes to everything except Pretty Sammy. Though I do hope to see it eventually. Especially the one released under the name of Magical Project S.

Maybe it's that I'd already seen the comfortable sitcom format of Universe, but OAV was one of the most punishing experiences to sit through--It was like they were MAKING UP every single episode as they went along. Shocked
(So, Grandfather isn't really old, he just appears that way, and there's this Mass stuff and Ryo-Ohki can turn into a humanoid furry, and....AAAAUGH!! -runs screaming from room- )

As for Ryo and GXP, those were made after the old creators left, and "Tenchi" became a commercialized studio brandname any old director could throw around:
If I said that GXP not only didn't have any of the characters in it, but was from the director of Excel Saga, you'd think I was kidding. Oh, how I wish I was. Sad

First of all, the DISCLAIMER: Don't worry, it gets better after episode 6....Like Lucky Star, think somebody got the pink-slipperoo mid-series, and the show got rebooted with a plot. We lose more darn fans on Vol. 1 that way.

As to What: Tenchi Goes to College...while his adoringly devoted stalkers remain back in the country, and try to find various means to sneak into the big City to forc...er, persuade Tenchi to Make Up His Mind. Problem is, he already seems to be making up his mind about a new girl from class.
But a new villain doesn't want the odd family to stay together, and wonders whether Divide & Conquer will do the trick--Mysteriously, one by one, every one of the group is getting a chance to leave for the old pre-Tenchi life they always wanted, and only Ayeka fears what will happen if the group goes their separate ways...

(And why do I go into detail?--Because if I hadn't, we'd have had two dozen posters all knee-jerk posting "Oh, man, that was crap! I threw it out after Vol. 1!" Razz )

#1 - I used to like it; the same goes for the harem. Tenchi was a loser, yes, but which protagonist of a harem series isn't a loser?
#2 - My favorite character was, mm. The scientist, I guess.
#3 - The princess. Oh, damn, talk about an annoying character.
#4 - The princess.
#5 - No. Not enough concentration nor patience for reading.
#6 - I think I missed GXP(a few episodes seen) and Pretty Sammy(magical girl phobia). I believe there's a new spin-off out there(with super long episodes); of that I saw one episode.

Confused Somebody wasn't paying much attention. spoiler[The tree of Jurai was present on Yosho's property from the get-go, thus signifying that he was not what he seemed. Ryo-Ohki was a creation, not necessarily a creature, and ended up being fused with one of Washu's lab-rats in order to prevent a disaster. The side effect was that she took on a more humanoid form.] Sorry, but I can only see your complaints as a failure of paying attention; the first two OVA's were much more carefully planned out than Universe was.

1) Though not in the top ten or so of my favorite anime of all time, I did and still do enjoy Tenchi Muyo and the few universes of characters and scenarios it presents. Tenchi's timidness didn't bother me. I guess it sort of reminded of my own personality, though he has a better work ethic.

I guess I like how the show can be funny and poignant at the same time. It even has some decent sci-fi, though it's nothing hard, and really plays up a lot of the cool factor. I wanted to see a bit more action at times in the original OVA, but there was the potential for more later on, even if the third OVA didn't live up to expectations (in that or in any other way).

I recently managed to finally collect all the DVDs for the original two OVAs. I also have the first movie. I'll be watching them again fairly soon.

2) Favorite character... hm. I like them all quite a bit. It's probably a tie between Ryoko and Washu, child and mother (at least, in OVA continuity). Ryoko is so fun-loving and caring towards Tenchi, even if she's a bit too aggressive at times and can be a bit selfish. As for Washu, you can tell a scene is going to be good when she shows up. She's simultaneously outrageous and coy at the same time, and willing to use both.

3) Pretty much any character introduced in the third OVA. Mary Sue Noike, pointless Tennyo, story contradicting Airi, boring Z, puzzling Kagato-loli, Mihoshi's brother, and so on. What a total trainwreck that third OVA was.

4) That the OVA turned into such trash in the third OVA.

5) I have a few volumes of the manga. They're decent.

6) All three OVAs (I only own the first two, though, since they're the only ones worth watching), Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, and all three movies.

It was a decent franchise until Masaki Kajishima himself destroyed it.

Thanks for commenting, but I asked that everyone answer the questions in order. You answered number 6, that's fine, but next time please answer in order. I have everyone do this so no one goes off topic. Again, thanks for your comment.

You make a good point. Thanks for pointing that out.

1) Do you like Tenchi Muyo? Did the whole harem thing get on your nerves? Was Tenchi too much of a loser to have all these girls devoted to him?
Tenchi was my first harem anime, back when it came on Toonami. Back then the concept was so new to me (like, a guy living with girls all in love with him?! how wacky and unique? Anime hyper) It's still the only harem show I can still stand to watch (unless u count Ah My Goddess. but I dont.)
Uh..I don't think it was strange for the main girls to be in love with him, they all had their reasons. It's the random girl characters that pop up later and start crushing on him after like...2 seconds. It's like "wtf? you just MET him! and he's probably related to you!"

2) Who is your favorite character? Ryoko and Mihoshi :3

3) Is there a character who annoys you? out of the main cast? Aeka. I don't hate her as much as I used to, but there are still those moments....

but now that OAV 3 is out, I still have a bigger grudge against Noike. and Tennyo, spoiler[ tenchi's unnecessary "long lost sister"] not that they're bad people or anything, I just don't think they're really important or needed to the story

4) Whether you like Tenchi Muyo or used to like it, was there a particular thing that annoyed you? all the unneeded side characters. and Kajishima Masaki's apparent need to confuse the heck out of fans by making up spin-offs 10 years after anyone cared and that don't really match up with previous adaptations so that you have to go back and watch them all again to try and make sense of what you just watched ((basically just the 3rd OAV Anime hyper))

5) Did you read the manga side stories?
I bought a few volumes, but once I realized that it was out of print and I didn't really feel they were worth hunting down, I sold them Anime hyper

6) Did you see Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, Pretty Sammy, Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki and/ Tenchi Muyo GXP?
I own all of them except GXP and Magical Project S and Sasami's Magical Girl Club
