I'll try to condense down my questions:
1) Are there DVD players that can play regions 1 and 2? I've heard rumors, but I'm not sure if they're true.
2) Is there any way to modify a r. 1 player to play r. 2?
3) Do imported region 2 players work with American TVs and sound systems?
Thanks...

1) Yes there are. Some have been set to Region 0, which will play most DVDs. Others give you the ability to switch.
2)There are some firmware updates that work with specific players. You need to download them to a computer, put them on a CD-ROM and run them in the player. Presto!
3)They should. The only time there should be a problem is if there is a difference in broadcast standard. Fortunately, Japan and the US are the same standard, NTSC. Britian uses PAL.

I can answer these two questions. Yes and sort of. I have a DVD player that is all region and will play any DVD (at least the ones I've tried). It's automatically set to read whichever region the DVD is set for and loads them like it's totally normal and routine.

As for the TVs and sound systems, so long as your DVD player and sound system are compatable, there shouldn't be a problem.

And as beelzebozo mentioned about the NTSC and PAL signals, that should be the only thing you have to worry about. However, some DVD players can actually make up for that. Mine supposedly converts the PAL signal to NTSC and vise versa. My TV is NTSC, but I haven't had a chance to test it yet as I have no PAL DVDs (though I'll probably buy the UK Special Edition of Battle Royale someday Anime smile).
