Ponyo is gaining on YuGiOh and Pokemon 3. Those movies made $493,200 and $418,548 on their fourth weekend respectively, compared to Ponyo's $1,288,000. But I wonder if it will be able to make up the difference.
It certainly would be nice to have a Miyazaki movie in the top 3.

Aren't you supposed to wait until Labor Day weekend's over to get a final count this week?

amazing animation, however the plot is definitely geared towards 5 year olds. if miyazaki was to release a spirited away now I bet it could crush pokeman (which has always sucked)

Well, Pokemon has a publicity-gaining franchise and televised series in its favour, something Miyazaki films aren't gifted with. I myself remember receiving a special trading card for turning up for the first Pokemon flick, something I was shamefully looking forward to more than the film itself.
Such tactics probably wouldn't be approved of by the well-meaning chaps of Ghibli.

And Pokemon was an marketing juggernaut ten years ago. Even today it's still formidable, and it's a shadow of its former strength.
Is there a place I could find how well Ghibli movies have done on DVD in the US?

My kids and I loved it and I have recommended it to several other moms. When we went, there was a group of kids from a local Day Camp and they seemed to be enjoying themselves a lot. Think a few were dancing in the aisle at the end while the credits were rolling, too cute!
When asked which he liked better, Ponyo or Totoro, my 10 year-old couldn't make up his mind.
