So I need some help and I thought I'd ask the ANN community. As of recently, I've been asked to do a presentation on World War II and the Holocaust using Anime as a basis. And while I don't have a topic as of yet, I would like to get a nice list of anime going that I can pick from.
Here's where I need your help. I need any anime that takes place between 1939 and 1949, or anything leading up to those dates. I would love to have an historical event happen in them, however just being about WWII is acceptable. I do, however, need the ANN page about the anime for reference. Here's what I have so far... Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shambala - Historical context is the Beer Hall Putsch – November 8th, 1923 Axis Powers Hetalia - Describes summit meetings and historical facts about WWII First Squad - Shows Mid WWII from the Soviets viewpoint. Again, any and all Anime about WWII is welcomed. Thank you all for helping! |

the two essential films are Grave of the Fireflies and Barefoot Gen. Of the two, Barefoot Gen is the one that best shows the horrors of war... it has some of the most gut-wrenching depictions of the A-bomb aftermath that I've seen. However, Grave of the Fireflies shows the great day-to-day effects of a country at war and how this made life difficult.

A couple of recent shows set in the early 1950's make reference to events during the war. Both Nijuu Mensou no Musume and Mouryou no Hako have characters who had been involved in research, usually on human subjects, during the war. Nijuu Mensou leaves the identity of the war unspoken, but given the period setting it's pretty obviously WWII.

I hope this doesn't get locked, as it's a very small and specific request.
Zipang is like that movie, The Final Countdown. Except instead of an aircraft carrier, it's a modern day destroyer equipped with all the fixings like advanced radar and long-range weaponry. They're thrown into the Battle of Midway and they rescue an officer from the water, where the story really spins off. Other than that, there's The Cockpit, by Leiji Mastumoto. It's three short stories about different people during the war. |

Millenium Actress is a (fictional) biography of a 20th century actress, starting with her as a teen in WWII Japan. It touches on the propaganda films, secret police, etc.
Beyond Conquerer of Shamballa, the Fullmetal Alchemist tv show also has references to WWII. When Edward first ends up in spoiler["our" Europe], his father asks him if he saw "the horror that is to come" (based on the flash, he's referring to the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki). And at the end of the show, there's a reference to the hyperinflation of the German currency (which happend in the 1930s). |

Maybe Natsu no Arashi. Not always set in WWII, and not to say too many spoilers it at different times goes to that period. It shows more along the lines of parts of the young Japanese girls left behind in a small town.

Barefoot Gen has already been mentioned, and rightly so; you can't have a complete picture of the Japanese experience on the homefront in the WWII era without it. You'll never find a more stark, brutal, or enlightening portrayal of the bombing of Hiroshima in any medium.
However, Barefoot Gen 2, which was released on the same DVD as Barefoot Gen when Geneon released the movies a couple of years ago, is arguably just as important for what the OP wants, for it offers a "three years later" look at what was going on in Hiroshima after the bombing. Especially telling is the Japanese treatment of war orphans and those left disfigured by the bombing, though it also deals with long-term radiation poisoning, the forming of makeshift families composed of war survivors, lingering damage and economic realities, and so forth. |

For Natsu no Arashi I would look in to the 4 episodes or so that are key points when they travel back to WWII when bombing happened. Other then that it's mostly a slice of life show |

Someone mentioned Jin-Roh here, but the post was deleted so I did some research on it after having watched the movie.
The movie certainly opened with scenes of the nazi's occupation in Japan, but the show features only references to the political situation in Japan during the 1960s and early 1970s, which would be post WWII. I don't think it would be of much help to you, since you're after WWII events and not post war events. |

Well, many anime rarely focus on WWII since it's a taboo much like Germany. But I believe Jin-Roh may be your best option like what egoist said. Apparently, this is based on the fear of Fascism taking over Japan during the time period when the Kerberos saga was released. Although, if the Nazis were to win World War II, they would at least invade the Japanese empire and end up treating the Japanese as trash (or even genocide them), as the Nazis are bunch of racists who see the Japanese as being "inferior." |

There were two anime films based on the diary of Anne Frank (here and here). Osamu Tezuka wrote an entire manga about Hitler, though it never got the anime treatment; oddly enough 'Hitler' shows up in one of Tezuka's short films as a disgruntled lumberjack, but that's more a case of borrowing an image of evil than an actual WWII reference (Legend of the Forest, available on iTunes).

Two Momotaro propoganda films were made during WWII that are worth seeing. The first one, Momotaro's Sea Eagles, is available on DVD Another, more recent film, the name of which I absolutely can't remember, invovles a musician who gets drafted and stationed in occupied China, who ends up helping the villagers. I wish I could remember the name of it.

Not sure if it's what your looking for, but some flashbacks of World War II are shown in the first season of Black Lagoon. The "last mission of this German Sub" during the end of WWII plays into the plot.

No, the Nazi's in Black Lagoon don't count. The flashbacks don't even last a full episode, so I doubt the author would want to categorize that as a full-fledged "WWII anime."

Ok well how about Who`s Left Behind? (Ushiro no Shoumen Daare) then? I never saw the film, but I hear it is exellent. And since it takes place in the 1940's, I say it easily could work right? Plus it deals primarily with the war. |
