Mamoru Oshii has nothing better to do than direct an anime about an overrated FPS? Where's he going to put the bassett hound?
Didn't Sky Crawlers do well enough to not have to sink to this?

I love the irony of the guy who directed a movie like Avalon working on a Halo installment.

I'm not a big fan of Halo, but I don't hate it either.
However, with Oshii on board, i will be picking up this movie. I just hope the different directors are given some creative freedom over not just the look, but also the concept and the scripts of their films. Otherwise they may end up like Gotham Knights, very very pretty, but kind of uninspired story wise.
Still, a good director can often elevate a crummy script. Just think of all the TV anime that occasioonally takes an absurd leap in quality when a good director or animator is one board. Or Takeshi Miike's 90s ganster films. He took very average, run of the mill Yakuza stories and made them interesting and crazed with his lunatic storytelling.
I hope these films turn out well. I'm glad they're doing interesting things with the Halo franchise.
Plus, this isn't the first time they've brought in a very respected and ideosyncratic artist to contribute to the world of Halo. There was actually a Halo comic done by the legendary French comics artist Moebius. And it turned out to be pretty cool.

Oh please. Just give it a rest already. If Oshii wants to be a part of this, then let him. Whining about it won't change a thing. Did you even stop to consider that maybe he actually likes the Halo franchise?
Personally, I think this could be pretty neat. It's nice that they are getting higher profile directors involved this time around.

How am I whining? Oshii can do what he wants, I just personally think he's above this.

Oh good, this means we can expect Master Chief to sit in a chair for 20 minutes and explain his actions and the possible consequences. I sure do love Oshii.

Well, I have a few hopes for this series--a different, non-US perspective, for one thing, could do it some good. Perhaps it could surprise us, like Robot Carnival did years ago.

I'm sort of inclined to agree. Though it's interesting news none the less. Particularly with Aramaki, IG, 4C and BONES attached. Still, I never figured out what made Halo anything more than fairly average (I'm told it's because I never played multiplayer or something). 2 was fairly blah when I played it, and I still love being pitied by an employee of Game Crazy for never playing more than the demo of 1.

Halo was a fun game and a solid shooter. It had a solid, cinematic story. It had one of the best soundtracks in action-game history.
That's as far as my praise for Halo goes. The story was fun, but not freaking REVOLUTIONARY. The assumption that all these directors and writers are really so interested in Halo of all things pretty much falls apart when you consider how many game franchises have flat-out better, deeper, more original and more interesting stories - think Bioshock, Xenosaga, and Metal Gear Solid, to name just a few. Why would someone interested in storytelling - particularly someone like Oshii, who exclusively enjoys deep, contemplative and philosophical stories - choose this game over dozens of other, many would say better, candidates to make a movie out of? Simple - Microsoft pays by the truckload. I think they've made it pretty clear from the start that nothing's beneath them when it comes to buying out talent - try to think of a single first-party dev studio under M$ that wasn't either independent or owned by another company before they were bought up. And, in retrospect, also observe how many of these dev studios have since left M$ to become independent again. But, I digress. Like I said on the other thread for this topic, I'm really more upset with Oshii for selling out than I am with M$ for buying. As Penguintruth said, this is beneath him. Way, way, beneath him. Maybe he's under some deluded impression that this is the best way to get Americans to be aware of his work. In fact, maybe he's not wrong about that - but what I see as the end result of all this is that he makes a short that's so predictably wordy and contemplative that the millions of dumb jock Halo fans will hate it, yet so dumbed-down compared to his usual fare that his existing fans won't like it much either. So really, I guess that's the best I can hope for at this point. Not that it makes any difference to him, he'll be getting a gargantuan check from M$ either way. But never in my wildest dreams would I imagine such a great director stooping so low.

That's right folks, irrefutable proof that Oshii "sold out" (seriously? ) is that there are actually games out there that gatotsu911 thinks are better than Halo. Never mind the possibility of different tastes. Since we know what type of films Oshii makes, it should follow that we are authorities on what type of video games he likes as well!

Oh bloody hell...are you kidding me? You aren't maybe being a little over dramatic? He's 'sold out' now has he? Let me ask you this: Do you have any basis whatsoever other than assumptions to say that this is just a cash grab? Do you know how much Microsoft is paying him versus how much he would make on another project? Do you know what his thought process is and what he sees as the appeal of this project? No.
Besides, even if you're right don't you think the man's entitled to just make some money once? This attitude always amazes me. Nobody would blame you for trying to make as much money as possible at your job. Apparently though just because what he does for a living is creative and artistic, he's somehow wrong for wanting to be payed a lot for once? It doesn't matter if he spends the rest of his career making brilliant, artistic works. He can't for once just use his talents to make him some money. No, if he does that he's 'sold out'.

gatotsu: Well, in the case of MGS, Kojima's probably very possessive of his baby, and likely only agreed to a movie version, 'cus of the script. As for Bioshock, that Pirates of the Caribbean guy already has the rights to the movie. And Xenosaga already got made into a (crappy) anime, so there's no new ground to cover. Moving on to why Oshii chose Halo, well, he loves his military porn, and Doom, Wolfenstein, and Half-Life were taken.
