It also doesn't have the OVA that came with the Geneon release.

Yes. This.
This is probably one of the all time top 5 Anisongs.

Eh, the ED's pretty good but not THAT good, IMO.
Anyway, let's get ready for 500 people pointing out how bad the BDs look as if we haven't heard it a million times before.

The best part about that ending is the segue into it, which is nailed perfectly almost every time.
I really liked the Denizens of this show, because they were both alien and strangely sympathetic. There was no "generic evil plot" (until the last arc), they simply wanted something and tried to accomplish it, which put them at odds with humanity just because. There wasn't any "Grr... humanity" stuff, no revenge, no idealism, no hatred. They just had desires that were outside of typical human interaction. It was a refreshing rejection of the kind of bad guy writing I'm used to from these kinds of shows.

This I thought SnS did better than almost any other series except Kurau Phantom Memory.
And wow, is that the real cover art? I wasn't a big fan of the cover art on the original Geneon singles, but at least they weren't hideous. That and the comments about video quality and no new Extras leave me with no desire to "upgrade."

I may buy this if only because of nostalgia.
SnS was the first anime I ever watched, ever. This shit was part of my childhood. I got the Geneon boxset when I was like 12 or something; I watched all 24 episodes in one sitting, you couldn't tear my 12-year-old self away from that shit if you tried.
...And then I think I gave it to a friend. I really need to rebuy it.

That'll hopefully be with the release of Shana S that FUNi has planned. According to the list of extras, it contains "The complete Shana OVA series" as bonus episodes...

That's a different set of OVAs. The OVA that came with Geneon's season 1 DVDs was released with season 2 in Japan so it might be the exact same case here.

I only really liked the first two volumes of Shana. After that it went down hil to me for many reasons which include: The incest twins. Awfully awkward watching that with family. The show didn't have any cool villains after Friangne. And Shana's 180 personality change. episode 1: You're a thing, Episode 24: I LOVE YOU and will disobey all orders to make sure you don't die. That said the show wasn't that bad. I still watched it and might go on to season two.

The arrangement and vocals are really good. The instrumental is so-so, but it's the vocals that really carry the song.

I really enjoyed this season especially the beginning, but when I first watched this I was surprised at how fast firagne fell and how the villans afterward felt a tad lackluster. though what drove it home for me in the end was, of course the action, and the shana yuji pairing.
Not exactly my favorite fir light novel adapted fare, but its still good fun, plus that first ending was awesome to me.

I have the old geneon box still sealed, should I bother selling it off and picking this up instead? maybe it would be best to wait and see if the OVA is confirmed in a future release?

At this point, it annoys me too when people point out that "it looks like an upscale". I remember people complaining about the Full Metal Panic BR releases. For me, it's something released before 2007, just assume it's going to be an upscale unless they go back and remaster it.
It's not mentioned in the review, but I take it that they've replaced Geneon's old subtitle font with Funimation's subtitle font in this new release for the DVDs? Just curious, since I know they've left the old release subtitle font in a couple re-releases.

You can't go back and remaster digital video, it's locked in at that resolution. The best you can hope for is a decently produced upscale to enjoy the massive bitrate spike BD affords. You're not really receiving anything new, it just makes it easier to watch on a larger HD set.
