It's pretty commedable for Gen Fukunaga to allow ANN an interview to address this situation. It's probably the first time I ever respected him. And I agree, aside from tighter security measures, whoever was responsible for these leaks on the other side, whoever got in and took these illegally, needs to be prosecuted.

I agree completely with you. Too much talk about how they weren't technically "hacked" into, but it doesn't matter how it was obtained as they mentioned in the article. It was stolen plain and simple. Beef up security, learn a lesson and move on. Kudos!

iIt sounds like Funi probably figured ok we got these show and we're going to air them at such a such a time on such a such a day and thought nothing else about it. In so many words it sounds like Funi didn't think something could happen to them. At lease, that's what it sounds like to me.

It's unfortunate that carelessness on their part would result in a risk to the overall anime market in North America. At least that's what I gathered from the closing comments.
Information security is key in every field of endeavor, Funmation is ultimately responsible for the handling of the merchandise. It's good that they have owned up to the fact, but now lets see if their measures are appropriate in the technological area. ~td99 |

Nice read, but I was hoping some more light would be shed on One Piece's current situation specifically. Will the streams/simulcasts ever come back? Though I'm sure we wouldn't have gotten a straight answer anyway.

Interesting read however with the fact that Funimation's Video Portal has been down since the incident earlier this week, it would have been nice to ask when they might be done implementing these new procedures so that everyone else could get back to watching their anime.
[NOTE: This next statement is not for or against the actions of the people who distributed the episodes] I'm not a lawyer, so what law is it that says the access of material on Funimation's "publicly available" internet servers is illegal? As I understand it, it was simple as changing the episode number in the address bar. In this case, I don't believe there is any security measures being bypassed (which is illegal via DMCA). Is there another portion of it that forbids this? Don't get me wrong, I fully know these pirates are in the wrong via the distribution of this material. Its the inital access of the file, that I'm uncertain of the legality. Even if someone can provide the law in which it is, Funimation still dropped the ball in allowing this to be publicly available. I'm glad Funimation's CEO was willing to admit this, so there's now reason for me to berate him there. In all, I hope this outside distribution ceases. I enjoy watching Phantom weekly and hope to continue, possibly with newer series. With this security issue and the continued disrespect by the anime community for legally available series, I can understand why Japanese companies would be afraid to grant Funimation (or other anime companies that may come along) the license to stream episodes so soon in the US. I can only hope that issues get fixed and progress such as this continues to move forward. Glad they're upping the security. Good move on Fukunaga's part in addressing the concerns of the fans instead of leaving them in the dark as to what Funimation's plans are.

Hey, I'm happy they know who did it involving One Piece. That's great... I'm hopping to see the guy prosecuting big time! Although a part of me wished that they didn't know so I could add a joke in my (2nd) novel about it.

I still have a tough time trying to figure out WHY anyone still needs to bittorrent this and download. You can access the streams whenever you need to now. I know a lot of people want to "own" their copy on their harddrive, but as I recall from my days in college, I would watch said series and when it was over rarely, if ever, would I watch it again. The few that I did, I wound up buying since I wanted to check out the dub and get cleaner copies. Oh well, kids today.

Kudos, Mr. Fukunaga. I'm glad you're admitting your company's mistakes, taking the appropriate precautions and legal measures, and doing what you can to restore the validity of the concept of simulcasting with your partners in Japan.
