MacGuffin needs to be banned from the English language. I despise that word. On the other hand, Nina thinking of McMuffins is win. Monster's cool too.

The Love Machine was awesome in Summer Wars. Nina and co. are doomed.

It's (relatively) a large Pokemon reference being mixed into a bunch of references to other series, with that Nina charm added in.
I LOVE IT. |

I'm no expert, but I wouldn't it be Plot Coupon? I mean, MacGuffins are supposed to be irrelevant to the plot of the story, and if the pieces transport the gang around, well then, they aren't really irrelevant. Although I suppose you could call it a dismantled MacGuffin too...
//Totally not a Deus ex Machina, you call tell those apart because they always have a little Greek guy in a mask. ///Somebody send help, because I'm trapped on TV Tropes now. |

I think it would and wouldn't be a MacGuffin. It's a MacGuffin for the world they're in, but not for their own overarching plot.
*thinks* Am I done with the Quest for the Holy MacGuffin on KoL? I think so, since both my accounts are onto the War... |

Would it have been a Deus ex Machina if it had been a Xenogears figure? |

No no no. A MacGuffin isn't something that's irrelevant. It's a thing that exists solely to drive the narrative forward and could be easily replaced with any number of other things without any effect on the story whatsoever. |

There's a lot of debate on exactly what a macguffin is. Generally it's an object that drives the plot forward but could be replaced with anything. In this case they could just as easily be looking for pearls from a pearl necklace or feathers. So the model pieces do act as a macguffin.
Plot coupons are multiple macguffins, so it depends upon whether it's the parts of the model or the whole model itself that is the macguffin. The model would be considered a quest-object. The pieces could also be considered tokens or collectables, which are common in fantasy stories. A deus ex machina is where something happens to suddenly fix a problem or situation. Like a lightening bolt suddenly coming down and killing the villain. Or a person suddenly showing an ability they never had before. For example, being able to turn back time by flying around the world in reverse. |

Or a person suddenly being able to mentally control stuff in the real world, outside the computer-generated facsimile, just in time to stop some deadly robots from destroying him and his companions. |
