I didn't know you were into fighting games, Todd.
It's true that we are seeing a bit of a revival of fighting games being pushed into the market again. The community is looking livelier, too. There are even groups making their own doujin fighters. I have a lot to say about each of the upcoming fighting game releases, but for now I'll just look at the match videos till I eventually play them. Also, that Prinny game is going to rock my socks. |

Ninja BLADE looks cool.Itagaki quit, compitition moves in. Gundam Musou was fun.I just wonder what else they could make from Dynasty Warriors,oh...a part two.
I'm not one of the guys looking forward to SF4.I'm mean,it's cool and all but damn, the art direction could have gone a better direction. The characters look far to bulky. It moves like Dimps other fighters Rumble Fish 1 and 2 for the Atomiswave and chunky like the DBZ Budokai fighters kids seem to be in love with. Now Blazblue on the other hand,I love the new age sprite work. The new tile blending and sprite zoom look fantastic.Arksys has out done them selves again.
I loved Arcana Heart and look forward to part Two.Yakuza 2 is a must buy. I see you are a PC-FX fan.You obviously have the emulator.(How else did you get those clear screen shots). It's one of my favorite systems from the past.I have played every game commercially released for it.Great system.Anime fans should check it out.I look forward the the next column,Vajura On! |

Yay, I too was a big fan of fighters back in the day. My favorite absolutely terrible fighting game was DOOMSDAY WARRIOR! for SNES. It had hardly any characters, and I think a small part of me might have even known it was a P.O.S. but damnit, that game had a dragon-man and vaguely anime-styled characters at the time when I was first falling in love with anime. It was god-awful, and I loved it!
That Prinny game looks gorgeous. I've never played any of the Disgaea/NIS games, but I'm willing to go pretty far out of my way to get a good, shiny 2D platformer. Great review of Bratz Ponyz.. |

"Settle" for SMRPG? I own both Secret of Mana and SMRPG for the SNES and SMRPG is by far te superior game. I like Secret of Mana but I really regret going over the $35 range for it (I think it was about $50). SMRPG on the other hand, I spent $50 on it and would honestly have gone higher if I had to. The game is easy, old, and relatively simple but I absolutely love it and much of the gaming community does as well.
Also, that Bloodstorm pic isn't photoshopped? That's pretty terrible. The connection is obvious and intended but it conjures up memories of "Buy me Bonestorm OR GO TO HELL!". |

Time Killers was my guilty pleasure.
Didn't they already put out a CT CD here?
I'd like some real endings, as opposed to those BS Twilight Zone-esque ones.
Wait until Seiken Densetsu 3 before saying that.
You mean like this guy? [Link courtesy of Kung Fu Cult Cinema.]
Actually, Yakuza got a pretty good reception, considering it was more "Japanese" than Shenmue.
I think it's more a result of it being a last-gen PS2 release, which means that only the fans who bought the first one are likely to go for this. I imagine that prequel for PS3 will get a dub, though.
Replace "first Yakuza" with "Blood Will Tell", and I'll agree. Oh, and I remember Battle Heat included in some bonus mag in EGM back when they didn't suck. Did any of the programmers work on Punch Mania? |

Sagas, Super DragonBall Z, and the first two Sparking!/Budokai Tenkaichi games are the DragonBall console games I'm missing from last gen. So, I'll definately be picking up Trillogy, even though it's pretty much just for Super DragonBall Z.
I suspect that when this live action movie hits Atari may repackage Budokai, Budokai 2, and Sagas in another pack. And finally end it when the movie comes out on DVD in the fall with a pack including Budokai 3, Budokai Tenkaichi 3/Sparking METEOR!, and Infinite World. It's an easy way to make cheap cash for Atari I guess, and at the moment, they could use that. |

I can't say I've heard of Yakuza. It actually sounds pretty good. I just might check it out.

Is it bad that I've seen that episode of My Little Pony? Fairly recently?

So how's the swearing in Yakuza 2? That was the big thing that turned me off on the first one: they'd use the F-bomb every 3 words which was bad enough, but what made it even worse was that the translators obviously had no idea how to use English cursing correctly. It ended up sounding both offensive and incredibly stupid.

Gotta hand it to 'Nippon Ichi' they always come up with some weird and exciting games. That is if you like grinding your characters all the way to 999,999 and so on.
As for 'Square-Enix'. I'm not really happy with the way they've been going. I mean all they do is 'FF' games. Which is pretty much their bread and butter now. Oh and let's not forget 'KH'. 'Sakaguchi' is gone now because even he can only take so much. I'm a fan of the older series. Or should I say "pre-Nomura" though I am enjoying the FFIV remake. But it's all they've concentrated on and pretty much left all their other flagship titles in the "used" barrel never to be hear much from again. Releasing 'CT' was a good thing for new gamers, but now they might be releasing 'Mana'? Hell, that might be the best thing considering how much of a disappointment the last 'Mana' games were. Considering how much folks loved 'SOM', maybe they'll release the others. But that would mean changing the title back to what it was originally causing even more confusion. Since the first 'Mana' game was on the gameboy as 'FF Adventure', 2 came over as 'SOM' and '3' was advertised as 2 but never made it over and we ended up with 'Evermore' instead. As a somewhat enjoyable "copycat". So many titles that have never seen the light of day. 'Romancing Saga', 'Mana', 'Parasite Eve', 'Bahamut Lagoon', 'Brave Fencer Musashi', 'FFT', etc... And when they do decide to revisit they screw them up. Because after all the bigger titles are the ones they want to [milk] push because gamers are too dense to realize they're not really trying. And when they do try no one likes it "go back to what we didn't want because the one that created it made it look cool. Because we're so darn used to it and wish it was different". Which is one reason why many of the creative staff are gone. And now they're messing around with 'DQ9's release. What happened? And it's not just 'Square-Enix', it's other companies too. Where staff who have worked on projects that made the company money just kept running with the same thing every year. So they leave and form their own companies so they can have freedom and control over their properties. Not trying to knock them, but it really upsets me when I see a company run itself into the ground with the same things over and over. I still love 'Square-Enix' but I wouldn't mind seeing something new by them. Even if I never play it. But most of all I would like to see some of their older titles get remakes/upgrades for the hand held. They seem pretty good at that already. That 'Fist of the North Star' game looks interesting. I'm going to have to check out that game 'Bloodstorm'. One thing I would like to add, is that the 'SFIV' game is looking good. At first I really hated how this game looked. But after seeing it more in action on game sites I saw that 'Capcom' for once did their homework. It has it's moments as a 3D game, but it handles like a 2D. At least it looks 10x better than 'SF: EX'. I'm not into fight games but I always enjoyed all the 'SF' incarnations that graced the arcade scene. Hey now, don't be dissing the DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi games. Some of us enjoy fighters where you don't have to memorize sixty button presses to pull off your special moves. |

I always thought it was a fun game to play and good as well. Not as excellent as the MK series but still great. |
