I don't know if it's worth making a thread about, but it surprised me.
According to Amazon's listing for the first volume of Cross Game, it's going to cost $19.99, and is 500+ pages, which the Japanese first volume isn't. The only other Viz products that come out at the price and page count are the Viz Big books. I don't know if they'll be oversize editions like Viz Big, but it looks like they might be releasing the series as omnibuses, unless this is just some typo. Maybe they're not expecting it to sell so well because it's a sports series? Coincidentally, I also found out that Yen Press is releasing Sasameke, also a sports series (though much shorter), straight to omnibus as well. I don't think this is a bad idea at all, especially for longer/older manga which might not sell that well. |

I think it's a good idea: consumers get a lot of bang for their buck with better quality production, and they're certainly more noticeable on shelves. If Viz can streamline things a bit and get more series out that they may be apprehensive about doing otherwise (like, why haven't they licensed Taiyo Matsumoto's Hanaokoto?), then all the better. |
