That probably says something about the state of the American music industry right now. Congrats, Utada-san.

that's great for her.
how about BoA?
I'd like to see some other japanese / haafu artists be successful in the US or Europe. Olivia or Yuna Ito f.ex.

BoA reached #7 on the top 10 pop album chart. Was a pretty big thing considering who she was up against!

Good for Utada. I actually like the album too. She is getting better promotion then with Exodus so that probably has something to do with it.

Hooray! I'm glad she has some success in america! (I personally like Exodus better though...)
Is it just me, or is the cover of her CD incredibly boring? It's like they though it was going to just fail, so they just whipped up a rushjob cover... The designer in me screams to redo it...

Yeah, animato, hotel lobby, and kremlin dusk totally saved Exodus for me.
Although, overall, This is the One is much more consistent in terms of the quality of each track vs. Exodus -- which had quite a few weak ones.
This is the One is the better album no doubt.

Yeah, I know what you mean. When the Come Back to Me single was leaked by island def jam's website and they were using that picture I though it was temporary. Then I saw that photo on the actual album, and I'm like despite the fact I like this album more than Exodous, the Exodous album cover looks better (it doesn't look like someone threw words over a photo in photoshop).
Regardless, I'm glad to hear she doing much better her second time around as oppose to her first. I hope things continue to get better and better for her. I'm just a little upset that the radio stations in my area have yet to play her I'm not entirely surprised because for some reason Pittsburgh is like the last city on the planet to ever get any of the latest music, but the radio stations back home in York and Harrisburgh are already playing her, so I'm a bit pissed.

I agree with everything you said here. Wish Exodus had better promotion but at least it's helped in getting Utada to this point.
As for the CD cover design... TOTALLY agree with you on that one. I actually felt the same way about Exodus because all they did was use some tacky Photoshop effect and slapped on some text. Thought it couldn't get any worse, but This is the One definately beat Exodus.
I just hope things keep looking up for Utada as she's such an impressive talent. I also hope she's not pressured into changing her sound/style because it's so unique.

The problem is this could be just an indication of the large number of existing Jpop fans in the US as opposed to Utada actually making it in the US and attracting new fans.
Is there anyway to know what the ranking equals in actual sales?

It's possible though that they might have been so going forward or trying to promote online, which may be why Exodus didn't do so great when it came out. This is the One however seems to be doing good in the online sector, which more than likely will help it in the physical world as well. Good luck to Utada on May 12.

Does she tour a lot in the U.S. or at least do a couple concerts every so often?

No she has never done a tour or concert here. I don't remember any concerts or Exodus either. Her fans here mostly know her stuff through the internet and Kingdom Hearts.

not only hasn't she toured in the US, in recent interviews she has said she has no plans of touring here unless there's some sort of demand. So if we want her tour here we've gotta be vocal about it for her to consider it, and I'm betting good sales with her new album may be enough to get her to consider it seriously.
