This is stupid. I hate all the tasteless merchandising this wonderful anime has to suffer and be burdened with.

I actually find this pretty awesome and I would guess most fans of the show would feel the same. The show is awesome and it had great characters and Yoko is extremely popular so it makes sense to want to get her out there more.

I liked Yoko too. I just hope some of this makes its way over here.
Besides, merchandise is how the series rakes in the dough. So go Gainax. |

How is it any less tasteless than all of the fanservice in the anime? Get a grip... |

Welcome to GAINAX, enjoy your stay. Even if they just made a 10 second clip and bundled it with a DVD, the otaku who already own that DVD would re-buy it. It's a symbiotic relationship, not exactly mutual I suppose. And as a previous poster said, this show was designed for merchandising. |

And last time I checked, no one's forcing you to buy the merchandise, right?

I'll pick this up for the storyboards. So sue me.

You do realize that that's the only way the company can actually make money, right? The anime merchandise industry is 10 times that of the anime video industry. If that's not cool, perhaps it's better to have even more exorbitant DVD prices? although since demand quantity certainly wouldn't be consistent for a $500 DVD, perhaps it'd be better to just do without anime in general. |

It isn't any less tasteless. Fan service is usually tasteless garbage, too. Code Geass turned into crap for me because of the constant bombardment of useless fan service. Gurren Lagann's fan service (in the show itself) is more of a joke than anything else.
That would be depressing if the possibility of selling merchandise was the only reason the show was created.
Oh no, merchandise is fine. It's stuff like this that ruins it for me: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/goods/goods_detail.html?KEY=NEOGDS-2282 Seriously? Kid Nia?
No, but it's embarrassing. |

No it's not the only reason, but it's definitely an outcome that was predictable. At its core, this is still a kids show, thus marketing and merchandising afterwards.

It would still take them months and it's too late to get it on discs that are already coming out. And I doubt they'll give it it's own release or make a special edition release, unless they package it with the movie and hopefully the parallel works. |

And while you're up on your high horse, Gainax will be laughing all the way to the bank. |

Welcome to the world of Japanese printed body pillows (definitely not my thing). I've seen much more tasteful shows get the same pillow treatment with much younger characters. Try this one on for size. (Semi-work safe, but will probably make your skin crawl) And that one's actually still considered tame by comparison to other pillows. Emerje |

mm, and that's my problem with Gurren Lagann merchandise now. In my mind, as soon as I saw that Nia pillow a few months ago, it and all other GL merchandise suddenly became solely the domain of "that" crowd. And I really love the anime, so it's disheartening to see things like these body pillows, and now strangely making a fictional character an "idol" (I can't stand idols in general, for all the same reasons as the other stuff I'm talking about). You know, what it comes down to is that I just don't like otaku. |
