As a huge fan of Lupin III, the new set of Series One released by Discotek and Eastern Star was a no-brainer purchase from me. I was enjoying the ride until I noticed something odd about the audio. Namely, it's out of sync. A character will move their lips, and the voice track will kick in every-so-slightly after the mouth started moving. Something will explode, and the sound effect will emit after the actual explosion itself. I'm wondering if this is due to it being an older title that is difficult to remaster, or if it's a flaw in the DVD itself, and if any other people who have purchased the set are experiencing the same problem?

I started a topic on the Amazon forums as well, and i haven't gotten a response quite yet, so I figured I'd give ANN a go.

Have a nice day, and thanks in advance for responding Smile

Yes I've been having the same problem. The degree of the problem varies from episode to episode but I was watching an episode last night and had to stop as it was that bad.

I had a quick look around online but no one else has mentioned the problem. Perhaps only a small batch was affected? I'll be contacting Discotek anyway.

Me too, glad to know I"m not the only one with the issue. And yeah, I definitely noticed that it severely varied based on the episode.

Can you list me some episodes where it was particularly bad, and which audio stream you were listening to? Thanks.

Don't normally post on ANN, but being a Lupin fan I thought I would chime in. I only got the set within the last two weeks or so through Rightstuf. I have maybe only watched the first 3 episodes because I've been too busy to dig in with it.

I didn't notice anything in the first episode, but on the second (with Pycal) it was very noticeable. Characters would move their lips for a few seconds off from when the voice would begin and sound effects on gunfire and explosions were noticeably off from the action on screen. I was listening to whatever the default audio stream is.

I can't comment on the overall situation since I still have most of the set to go through, but I hope some news turns up whether it's a flaw with just some of the DVD's or other issues.

I just spot-checked a few things, and yeah, all that audio sync stuff is on both the old HK bootlegs and the R2 "Lupin the Box" remasters. It's just an old show without very good audio sync, I'm pretty sure that's all you're seeing here.

Wouldn't surprise me. I got to thinking about it since I posted and I seem to remember some people talking about audio sync problems when season one first got fansubbed back before Discotek was on the scene.

Still, good to know it's likely just a case of being an old show.

Discotek's release of the Hokuto no Ken/ Fist of the North Star TV series has most of the episodes out of sync. For the first disc, episodes 1,4, and 7 are in sync, where episodes 2,3,5, and 6 are out of sync. This pattern seems to continue throughout all four sets.

It's my understanding that the Fist of the North Star sync problems are direct from the Japanese "HD remaster" DVDs. That is to say, it's either on the original show or at least exists on the Japanese release also. Has anyone done a comparison between the older Manga Video DVD releases and the new Discotek DVDs?

EDIT: Also, I specifically remember doing subtitle editing for Episode 2 of Lupin Part I and thinking it had awfully poor sync when Pycal first barges into Lupin's hideout. Everything feels weird and jerky, and it sounds it, too. But yeah, this weirdness is on all the versions I own.

I compared the 2008 HD remaster set to the Discotek release. The Discotek DVDs are definitely out of sync, where the HD remaster set doesn't have those out of sync issues.

Well we have our answer now, but...

Since initially posting I did a sampling of pre-remastered episodes and... yeah the problems look to have been there all along actually Embarassed . One episode (ep 21) doesn't seem as bad but yeah I can believe this is identical to the Japanese remastered release.
