Not too surprising really. It's a shame that more people are losing their jobs. Hopefully things get straightened out in the economy soon.
As a more general observation, I know that cutting employees is one of the quickest methods for any company to reduce costs, but fewer people with jobs means fewer that can buy things. It's a very dangerous cycle.

Yeah, nipping that cycle in time is what all the fuss has been about in government lately. Panic is the enemy.
This doesn't sound extreme, more like an "in before..." type of press release, before someone could exploit their changes as something worse.

That explains how they were able to license so much crap lately. But those lay-offs aren't going to help them make deadlines.

Ah, the perpetual troll arrives right on schedule.
Sounds like a necessary evil in this climate. Hopefully, it all works out for the best for them.

No, it doesn't. Not even a little bit. One has nothing to do with the other. Your self-serving bashing of Funimation for acquiring "too many" titles that you consider "crap" is getting very annoying, but spewing it as a not-very-clever reply to news of the unemployment of a friend of mine is infuriating.

Well, yeah, since the people laid off weren't from departments that had anything to do with pre- or post- production, these layoffs would have no impact on any deadline in any way. You accidentally said something that was facially true. Congratulations.
As for what you were apparently trying to imply, you're still just as wrong as usual.

My goodness is that headline misleading. Makes it sound like they were facing a crisis. Fifteen people in two years is hardly doom-worthy.

that at least two employees were laid off from the North American anime distributor Funimation yesterday.
The entire anime industery will now collapse.

Soon, Chris Sabat will go from voicing every other character to voicing every character, due to layoffs!
[/overreaction]
Seriously though, it's probably no big deal... except to the unfortunately laid off folks. This economy is rough for everyone.

More than half of those titles I'd love to see on my shelf. I don't know about you, but calling those accusations crap is arrogant and stupid. They have at least 2 A titles in just that list. A bunch of those have already made a name under there previous owner as well. The only one that was crap was ikki tousen. Why Funimation went after that series is way beyond me.
On a second note,I already know one of there titles that they haven't announced is Bamboo Blade.

Hmmm......this is interesting. Funi HAS been pumping licenses like crazy, but I'm interested in what their angle is.

Headline: "FUNimation Restructures with Layoffs in Several Departments"
First sentence from FUNimaton's statement: "We can confirm that FUNimation Entertainment has completed a company-wide restructuring that includes staffing reductions in several departments."
Which part of the headline is misleading?
Quote: | Fifteen people in two years is hardly doom-worthy. |
I think you misread the numbers. There are "at least two employees" laid off this year, but FUNimaton's statement also said "company-wide" reductions in "several departments." FUNimation lost another 10% two years ago, and that's significant for any company.
If you got "fifteen people" by adding 2 + 13, the 13 employees were from ADV, not FUNimation.
"A.D. Vision, the corporate parent of the anime distributor ADV Films, laid off 13 employees in October 2007."

When I think "Layoffs in several departments", I'm thinking at least 20-30 people.... not two.

Considering that they have there own private TV network you can assume they make as* loads of money from private advertising. It also helps that there part of a larger company which can fund its endeavors. Considering that funimation is moving in the right direction with iTunes, Download to Own, smaller cheaper boxsets with excellent dubs. They also have stuff up on xbox live now if I remeber right as well as free streaming of certain series on there own website. All in all I would assume this generates a good amount cash.

But it's apparently more than two, since that "several departments" line comes from FUNimation itself. Two is just the known minimum so far. It's not "doom-worthy," but it's also not small.
