I swear, watching homeboy off the street chatting with the cosplayers was the best pic of the group. That one just screamed comedy.
Well done, Zac.

Wow if that is what is considered a "big one" that is really small by convention standards...
I'm just saying the "Best Four days in gaming" that is Gen-con gets bigger crowds and has a "side" anime convention at the same time...

So we just found out that the official attendance count this year is 44,000, a relatively modest but hardly insignificant 1,000 body increase from last year's crowd...
So what accounts for the empty hall and room photos? From the comments about it being a little slow this year and about the holiday and shrinking anime market, I was really getting the impression that attendance was going to be down this year?

I was hoping Zac would write as well, I really enjoyed the article.
But at least people were given water in the warm room. Pretty nice of the staff to do that for the convention goers.
But what really made me laugh is the fact a group of cosplayers were talking to a vagrant.

It did look a lot emptier, but it also may be because LACC is so darn HUGE. I didn't go last year, so I can't compare it to the first year it was in LACC. Long Beach though was way too crowded; I could barely move in Artist Alley.
Panels seemed scarce this year; the only thing the day I went was the Funi panel. I thought Saturday was supposed to be the biggest day, which is why I chose that day to go, but it seemed Thurs/Fri had more stuff to do, which was strange.
And lol, re: Pastagina. When I first saw that restaurant chain since moving down here, I turned to my friend and said, "Are you serious??"

Great laugh. Having lived in LA for 25 years, the goth-homeless shot is priceless. Somehow, though, they don't look at all strange together...

This is why we love you, Zac.
I was pretty bummed that I didn't get to go this year. This actually cheered me up.
Thanks, Man.

There was less programming overall, and most of the people seemed to be cosplayers (or those who BLOCK TRAFFIC to take photos of them) vaguely milling back and forth between the Exhibit Hall and the Main Events/Panels areas. And the panels themselves were seldom full -- Funimation's was the one most packed that I attended, and that was, at best 75% full.
The lack of good programming options was a common theme at the feedback panel, and *personally* I attribute it to AX's traditionally heavy dependence on industry for direct programming sponsorship -- the industry that's still around doesn't have lavish marketing budgets. They acknowledged the problem, and I'm sure they'll adjust for next year.
The Exhibit Hall seemed reasonably full whenever I was there, but not as full as last year -- probably attributable to the lack of big exciting booths. However, the area in FRONT of the exhibit hall, where I sat for an hour undisturbed last year, was almost always full. I don't understand it.

Finally home from my trip to AX and LA. I'm really glad to see that it was a bit of a let down this year...I wasn't particularly impressed and feared this was a typical AX. Although I'm still pretty disappointed with the cosplay I saw. Not a single "wow!" costume crossed my path. Sure, there were plenty of good ones, but not the type that could stop me in my tracks.
