According to this article the first animation ever produced and publicly shown in Japan was Imokawa Mukuzo, The Janitor by cartoonist Oten Shimokawa, around January 1917.

Astro Boy was the first anime TV series, but there was plenty more anime before then.

The very first feature length anime film was the satirical war cartoon, MAMOTARO's Divine Sea Warriors. Back in the 20's through 40's, anime was equal to Looney Toons, mostly with war parodies.

No, even earlier, A particular fansub group is doing a colage (sp) of all the mecha anime since the 60's. In their video (so far approx 2h 45m long) there was one in the 60's but since I don't know Japanese, I have no clue what it is.

According to ANN's encyclopedia, Astro Boy (which started in 1963) is the first anime with an ongoing plot. I don't know if you want to define the first anime as anything animated in Japan or as an animated show that had a plot (wasn't zany looney toon antics). It's up to you.

Exactly right. All animation before the late 1920's were very short. Five minutes is just above average for length.

The bulk of animation in Japan up to the 40's were mainly war propaganda shorts including the Japanese army destroying Mickey Mouse and Popeye (I kid you not).

No doubt you did, since Patachu posted that information half an hour before your post. Sheesh.

I'd like to watch those. Today one of my friends was telling me about how some Nazi cartoons he'd found had some of the best animation he'd ever seen, so I'd like to see what the other Axis countries had to offer. And those sound pretty entertaining, in a Bambi Meets Godzilla kind of way.

From what I've read, the general consensus is that Astro Boy (Tetsuwan Atom in Japan) was the first anime. There were animations made in Japan before that, but Astro Boy was the first that fits a reasonable modern definition of anime.

Huh? Non of those are old enough as for being the first anime show...We can consider that Astroboy is the first anime created of the "modern anime time".

During the Second World War Japan and japanese people had better things to do with they free time or better things were to spend their money. So probably, the first japanese animation ever made was the already mentioned Imokawa Mukuzo, The Janitor. Which, remember, was created before war problems arrived there.

Huh?

Are we talking about the same topic? Cowboy Bebop started in 1998...

And as for Astro Boy, I do think it was the first significant ongoing anime series, but not the first anime aired on TV.
