Conan: What? How can you NOT like Case Closed? This show was originally called "Detective Conan", hey I like it! The FUNI thing about this show though - they changed its name to Case Closed to avoid me of all people from sueing them! Isnt that just WEIRD!?

-audience laughs-

Conan: -puts on glasses- Hey lookie me! I'm Conan Edo...whatever and YOU ARE THE KILLER! -points at a Max Weinberg-

Max Weinberg: NO! I SWEAR I didn't DO IT!
Conan: One truth prevails!

Except that's not why they changed the name, they changed it to avoid the folks who own the rights to Conan the Barbarian as Conan O'Brian can't copyright his own name and thus isn't a threat.

You think that is bad? You should go look up Koikaze. I'm very open minded, but the show is just dirty! Plus, the melodramatics was really getting on my nerves.

Same with Nanako, for that matter. Very Happy

Of course, a better reason for none of those 3 making a good replacement would be that they're all relatively short OAVs. On the other hand, maybe a fanservice block in Adult Swim... Twisted Evil

Well, look at FLCL. I was really surprised when that came on because it only has 6 episodes. They can only rerun it so many times before people get sick of it. But, then again, if they showed that short of a run, what's to say that wouldn't do it again?

I doubt they'd put a show with incest stuff like Sakura Diaries in CN. But then again, they put .hack Dusk in CN.

I think it helps with FLCL that it was completly random so that even though it was short, you could come in at anytime, not need to understand what was going on and want to rewatch it so the you could eventually understand what the heck you just watched. I think other short anime with deep plotlines might have a harder time.

Gah... .hack//Legend of the Twilight is not incest! There are no sexual relations between Shugo and Rena, so how can it be incest?

What about However You Spell that Wolf Gilrl's Name and Shugo? And that HORRIBLE french person, who's very character just OOZES incest? And at some points the male character's eyes tend to wander away from a girl's face during a conversation...

I am suprised it was able to get a timeslot outside of Adult Swim. It is late night, though...

Well, that's right but there's still plenty of incest humor in .hack. spoiler[For example, When Rena was data drained by SHugo, she starts acting weird and flirts with Shugo. ]

did anyone read what Adult Swim had to say about the Late Night With Conan episode this topic is supposed to be about? They talked about it before they aired an episode of Baby Blues. If you didn't see what they said then that sucks because i only remember what they said at the end.

here's the end:

-And the main character's name is Conan

-Booya!

Pierre probably made that. He's the show's graphic designer.

They've had that for years. Even before Gundam was on CN.

methinks that AS is probably ahead with tweens, teens and maybe young adults. But what about adults 24+ ?

I did overhear some 20-something males talk about FLCL on Adult Swim a while back...

Well it is based on a dating sim...

But going from 12:30AM to 1:30AM, with shows like Inu-Yasha & Case Closed might be a different story, especially if you watch these without the benefit of a 3 hour earlier window. Even I don't like staying up that late too much, and I'm 23!

Bah! You haven't lived until you've stayed up 'til 6 A.M.!

Aura: You have a point. Detective Conan looks interesting, but I don't see Kindaichi doing that well, so I don't know why FUNimation picked it up. I guess they figured, "If it's fansubbed or digisubbed a lot, it must be big." I also don't see why Viz changed the names, because they're not going to attract many
consumers outside of the hardcore fans. (I guess they learned how to market from Miramax.) Anyway, it'll be a while before those two companies will be able to license anything recent and/or lengthy like that again.

Vekou: Conan's as popular as it's going to get. Just like Lupin. (As a fan of the latter series, I'm actually glad it's gotten this far, because it was always the black sheep on the fansub circuit.)

Kazuki:

The only true test of how popular an anime show is (at least in the US) is DVD sales.

And tv ratings.

Anyway, since Conan was once a writer on the Simpsons, I think they should get him to write a co-produced anime comedy.

You... have no idea what incest means do you? It's only incest if they're related, what you're describing is more like nymphomania and pedophelia.

That's not incest. Rena wasn't even flirting with him, she just jumped into his arms (much to Shugo's dismay) and said things like "Oh, my hero! Shugo, you are so brave!" You're looking too far into it.

Ouka is the wolf girl, and the French guy is Komiyan III. I don't see how either of those characters have anything to do with incest. Since you apparently don't know what incest is (it's allright, there are some people who don't pay attention in school and turn out with a decent life; see Hollywood for a couple million examples), here's a handy explanation from Mr. Dictionary.

Quote:
in·cest
n.
1. Sexual relations between persons who are so closely related that their marriage is illegal or forbidden by custom.
2. The statutory crime of sexual relations with such a near relative.

Komiyan III and Ouka are not related to anybody. Shugo and Rena are siblings, but never engage in sexual activities (they're not even in love or anything), therefore, it's not incestual in any way.

There are many anime series out there that primarily deal with incestual relationships. .hack is not one of them.

As has been previously stated, I think everyone is greatly over-analyzing what was simply a 'point-and-laugh-at-the-cartoon-freak' sketch. You have an angry Steve Urkel clone venting about Japanese animation in a tremendously self-deprecating way. My guess is he probably doesn't watch anime and is simply fed his lines like any other person on the show.

It isn't too hard to notice that every point he tries to make uses the most outlandish plots or titles imaginable. He calls Big O the 'Batman of Japanese robot series', he refers to the silliest moment of Bebop, and of course he explains he likes the show because the jazz music helps him to wind down.

Follow that with the odd failure to point out the original title of Case Closed, and his suggestions whose only common thread are their outlandish titles (Bubblegum Crisis got a good laugh), plus his horribly inaccurate description of BGC, and you clearly have a choreographed sketch playing to the average persons assumptions about adult anime fans, nothing more. If you want to read into any possible malicious intent by Conan as a ratings conspiracy, well, I'll leave that to someone else. Smile
