A couple of questions...
1) Will it damage your chances of getting the position if what you review has already been reviewed?
2) Are we allowed to review VHS tapes? I ask this because the tape that I had in mind ("Perfect Blue") only features the dubbed version.

Well, would you be reviewing the dub?
May as well finish what you started, you need to submit two revies anyways. As long as at least one of them shows your ability to critique a dub.

1) No
2) That is perfectly acceptable for the sample review.

I've already answered that question. |
Ah, gomen na sai. I must've skimmed over it.

Vukir wrote: | *Sigh* One more question on my end. Thank you for answering my manga question, but, this one falls in a similar catagory. Are games based on anime and manga available to be reviewed? I.E. Evangelion: Girl friend of Steel, Galaxy Angel, Wild Arms 3, and even Pokemon. All those games either came from an anime, or, had an anime spawn from it. In all cases, posses anime within the game. Are reviews of such titles permissable? |
Nope. Not for now at least. One day it would be nice to have a gamind section on ANN, with gaming reviews. A few years back I almost took over and merged into ANN what was then a very large website on Japanese Games (actually, I believe it was the largest english website devoted entirely to J-games). But that didn't happen, and currently games are low priority.
Quote: | Although, I am sure that you would not be distributing games to be reviewed, but I am more then willing to purchase and review anime game titles (might as well review what I already play eh?) So, that should (hopefully) be the last question from me. Thanks again. |
Keep the ide in mind for when we do review games, but right now: nope.

I want to remind everyone - and this is really important, guys - don't apply for this position unless you really love to write.
Reviewing is not about getting free stuff or being 'closer' to the industry. It's about writing, plain and simple. It's about being able to dissect what you're watching and giving the reader your honest, detailed and educated opinion on something.
If you don't LOVE to write, don't apply for this position. It's that simple. If you can knock out one good review a week and that's it - if you don't love the craft - you will quickly grow to hate this position. The free stuff isn't worth it and isn't a good motivator anyway - doing things out of greed is bad and you'll live to regret it, especially when you discover you don't really love to write and can't do what's asked of you and are forced to renig on a promise you made.
Reviewing is an art. It's difficult and takes a lot of time to do right. Keep that in mind.

Well said.
This is a good career opportunity for someone interested in professional reviewing (Look where it got Zac), and its a great opportunity for dedicated hobbyists as well.
Yes, the free stuff is a nice fringe benefit, but trust me, you'll burn out very quickly if you don't love to write.

Especially since you don't get to review only stuff that you like.
So... have we scared away all the potential candidates yet?

Not me. I just sent in my application. Then again, I am a professional writer, and I love to write, so nothing here scares me.

Regarding the two sample reviews, does it matter if they are previously published (like in a college newspaper), or do you prefer something fresh?

I was wondering if there was going to be an announcement of who got the job, or will an email be sent out to those who submitted applications and reviews? The reason I ask this is the AOL spam controls on version 9.0 are pretty messed up, and I find myself constantly looking in the spam folder to find legitimate emails I need to read. I'm dying with anticipation and nerves to find out about this, and I didn't want to come across as pushy and/or impatient.

Sorry, I never saw this.
We've selected 8 candidates, from which we will be selecting the two reviewers.
The 8 candidates will all be notified by e-mail today. We will be sending e-mails to everyone that submitted an application (there were a lot), but it will take some time.
The actual reviewers will be announced on ANN at a later time.

Hmmm, I missed this. I didn't get an email on July 23rd so I assume that's it for me. Even so, has anyone who isn't a "candidate" gotten an email?

Not yet. I was going to do that, but something else sorta came up (the dead server). I'll get to it before the end of this week.
