Re: Hot Gimmick. I don't know what Viz was high on when they thought this would be a good title for American girls to read. I practically had a bird when I read the premise for it, and it's likely to raise the hackles of many women. But the sheer outrageousness of the plot does make it tempting to pick up, just to see what happens. Pretty business savvy, those manga writers.

You have no idea how how right you are when you say the plot is outrageous. The plot takes a complete 180 by vol 3 that leaves you stunned. And I think Viz knew exactly what they were thinking of when they liscensed this manga. It's teenage girl drama. It's like Dawson's Creek, The OC, except in comic format, and I'm pretty sure it's selling rather well with all the girls I know buying it. *just got all the girls in her anime club hooked to it last week*

It's a story for crying out loud! With made-up characters and plot; it's not real! Yet, here I am fussing over it, wanting to shove a backbone into Hatsumi, beat Rykoi to a pulp and expose him for what he is, publically take his mom down a notch or two (or ten), and totally get Hatsumi out of this predicament! *sigh* Guess, I can only keep reading to see where Aihara takes the characters and the story. I'm not sure that I want to, but it's going to irk me if I don't find out what happens.

And THAT is exactly what makes the story so good. I don't like Hatsumi much, she's the usual dense girl in shoujo manga, but hey, I know tons of girls like her, so I'm not having a problem with it. It's the story that gets you hooked, and drives you nuts. I can almost assure you that by the time that girl reads volume 3 of the manga, she'll be wanting to beat Azsusa to a pulp a and will be putting Ryoki to a much higher regaurd no matter how much of a jerk he still seems. While reading it I kept asking myself why the heck I was still reading it, and why the heck I was still hooked. It's just good. So good that even if you hate the characters, you'll still admit it's good beause you can't stop reading it just so you can continue to see how the characters screw themselves over.

So I'm guessing Hot Gimmick is the equivalent of a reality show. Stupid people acting annoying, but somehow being perceived as entertaining in the end.

Nah, more like a soap opera. Drama here, drama there. Drama made up with twist and turns and a plot which creats a story specially designed for an audience of females.

Anyway, one of Raijin's problems that no one has mentioned is the dated art in some of the stories.

What, exactly, is dated about the art. I'm not even sure how a manga can look dated. I don't see a real difference between Raijin and Shonen Jump in terms of production quality. In fact, Fist of the Blue Sky has some of the most beautiful art I have ever seen in a manga and Raijin started using that higher quality paper. The only difference I can see may be the style of the art. Raijin does seem to have a more "serious" look. Except for Getten, BowWow Wata, and perhaps Slam Dunk, Raijin does not conform to the "Big Eye" anime stereotype. On the other hand, One Piece doesn't really conform to that either. Is that what you are talking about?

Great point, I don't think manga can look dated either, considering its basicly just black on white, for the most part.

I mean, if ya consider the Fist of The North Star Master Editions, which just colorized artwork that is, at this time, well over fifteen years old. The end result being that the artwork looked like it was produced just recently in Japan.

Earlier a list of titles that fans may know was mentioned, and I feel Baki was left out. There is a Baki DVD out (I have it), so, SOME fans should know of it (Baki the Grappler lasted 42 volumes, the equivlent of Dragon Ball's 42 volumes aswell, so it was obviously a title that was well enjoyed in Japan).

Again, I think the real problem that held Raijin back was lack of advertising. I saw NO ads anywhere. The only advertising I think was done was Issue Zero, which was given away at a Con (I got the issue too).

I think Raijin should consider more advertising options, and perhapes getting one or two titles, maybe different from ones they currently have to give readers more "options", so to speak.
