I could write a whole thesis on all the things which I appreciate about Kara no Kyoukai, from the soundtrack and visuals to the characterization, the representation of urban violence and decay and its vision of utilitarianism (and antiutilitarianism) but that would be far from asked for in such a place.

I would love to read something like that. Kara no Kyoukai is fantastic and there hasn't been much written about it in the blogging community. I've been tempted to do something like that for a while, but there's just so much to it that I never feel like I could do the series justice.

We have an editorial on the franchise going up this Friday. Smile

Awesome, I'll give that a read.

I managed to get my hands on a good priced Madman release for this series last year, but I really think I should re-watch this series. Enjoyed it a lot, but I do feel like I've forgotten elements of the story.

Maybe I'll rewatch it in "chronological" order. I did watch it in the original release order, but want to see if the experience is that much different.

Not quite, remember when the movies were available for rent on the PlayStation Store?

At $2.99 per rental, a month of Prime + Anime Strike would still be about half the cost. Thus the statement is still valid.

That said, at it's core, this is a narrative on the conflict between the abnormal and the normal and a defense of the latter over the former. This is a recurring theme in Nasu's work (most notable, perhaps, in DDD) and a prety big reason for why he does so many seemingly pointles scenes like all those times Shirou is cooking and all the dumb but funny scenes in the novels.

Perhaps long meandering scenes are not the best way of getting the point across however. This is less of a problem in Knk maybe, but much more so in F/SN and Tsukihime.
It's true that there's not much of this in Extra (although I would say that Extella uses the contract with mundane quite a lot, only in specific context - waifus), but it has a stronger focus on the other big Nasu theme about strength in human imperfection. Too bad about the spotty execution and prevalence of otaku tropes.

Glad to hear there is a piece on GoS appearing soon. I really feel like my experience with the movies could be enhanced by some guidance.

I hadn't really heard of this before, sounds neat. So each episode is a film? How long does it take to watch the whole thing?

All together, it takes about as long as a typical 25 episode anime. Most of the films are just under an hour, but 5, 7, and 9 are all over 2 hours. 8 and 10 are OVAs and are only about 30 minutes.

I've watched 1-8 and really enjoy this series. I have yet to watch 9 will need to locate it at some point.

No need for dub.. just sayin

It would be more marketable if there were more audio options (though as most have stated, it's not popular enough to get one). I'm not sure how you having watched most of the series equates to it not needing a dub though. Strange logic there.

Woof, I wouldn't say 9 was bad enough to drag the overall rating down so far, but to each their own. The review otherwise I agree with.

At this point I think they'd have to continue to focus on spoiler[Mana] to do anything additional, but I'd definitely watch that.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of that.

Yeah but at the time, $21 vs $500 I think was pretty decent.
After watching from PSN, I liked it, but not $500 worth of like.

And so began the AoA series not called Persona 3 becoming invisible to me as far as physical releases.
