WOW! YAOI is on MTV?! THat is amazing. I think this is due to the success of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.
BUt that's great that more Americans are into yaoi. It's a great genre. |

Oh, I know it's not "gay porn," it's, as a friend put it, about two guys who "happen" to love each other. I'm not a fan of the genre, but while I'll still not put it down, I was just trying to sum up the gut reaction of the American populace, since subtleties and nuances seem to elude them on the whole. Mohawk52 got the general idea of what I was going for:

Now granted, lots of guys like it -- but these are guys who enjoy the environment of girls' and women's comics in general. "Girl on girl action" of the hump-hump-hump type for male consumption is not "yuri". |

Wrongo! First of all, the lighter variation of the girl on girl theme is Shoujo Ai, while yuri implies more physical action so to speak. However most people, myself included use yuri to refer to both. That aside, pretty much all yuri is intended for the seinen (young men's) audience. Recent examples like Kashimashi, Strawberry Panic or Strawberry Shake should make this abundantly clear. You are making it sound as if males would only be interested in yuri hentai, which is simply not the case (if anything yuri hentai is rather boring)

Christian anime isn't that new. Osamu Tezuka did anime adaptations of the bible stories for the Vatican in the late 80s just before he died. CherishedHonor wrote:
This is a stupid question but I'm guessing they're targeted at lesbian anime fans, right? I find it hard to believe that there are straight girl anime fans who like shoujo ai and yuri. Last edited by Animefan16 on Mon Mar 13, 2006 2:44 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Today I was sitting down in Ackerman Union (UCLA campus) watching MTV-U (MTV for universities) that they always play on the TVs there and this little story came up. Actually the reporter was different than on the link on ANN (it was a Korean girl instead of Gideon Yago. Oh yeah speaking of Gideon, I met his grandparents at an assisted living center...lol). Honestly, I wish they wouldn't introduce more controversial topics like Yaoi in the few instances they report on anime/manga on TV, much less on MTV. Then coupling it with Brokeback mountain...>_>. First anime/manga is "baby stuff or pron" and now it's going to become "gay pron," I fear. I probably shouldn't take it so seriously but it certainly doesn't help the already somewhat negative mainstream view of anime and manga.

I'm pretty sure that yuri/shoujo-ai got it's start in 70s shoujo manga just like yaoi/shounen-ai/BL. The writers were interested in playing with themes of forbidden love and sexual ambiguity more than providing titillating fan-service, so yes, it could and does appeal to heterosexual females. |

I was under the inmpression that the term "shojo ai" doesn't even exist in Japan, and was invented by Americans because it makes sense that if there's a "shounen ai," there should be a "shojo ai" too. (Shonen ai IS an actual term from Japan, and while the American meaning refers to soft-core yaoi, the Japanese meaning is closer to what we know as shota, in case anyone didn't know.) The Japanese meaning of Yuri refers to the girl-on-girl stuff intended for girls, and the stuff for boys is just called shounen. Unless is hentai, then it's just called hentai. |

since my post was deleted.. let me try to remember what I said...
I know, instead I switched browsers >< went with IE. LUV firefox, but didn't want to d/l something I'm never gonna use again!
I was floored by that end statement.. like "WTF?" *LOL* It's almost a hot/cold factor in what someone tolerates. Like saying, "Take that yaoi!" |

I won't claim to be an expert on the nomenclature here but I am pretty sure you got it wrong. Shounen is just that, boys and nothing to do with romance stories. Ironicly enough actual gays/lesbians are not a large enough audience to warrant the massive amounts of Yaoi and Yuri that is produced. And just as most straight guys aren't into Yaoi, so most girls are not into Yuri. A good hint of target audiences is often visual style. While most Yaoi will have a very Shoujo style (narrow pointed features, particular attention to hair, etc) the bulk of Yuri does not share these characteristics. Watch an episode of Kashimashi and tell me its not 100% for guys |

So your telling me, that three of the most famous Yuri shows; Utena, Kanazuki no Miko, and Maria-sama ga Miteru; weren't drawn in a shoujo style? I think what you are doing is targeting shows that were made specifically for men, forgetting that there are plenty of other Yuri manga and shows targeted at women. |

When i said shounen, I meant the genre itself and not the gender of the people in the stories, since shounen is defined as manga for boys. And there are shounen romances, like Love Hina, for example. Sorry if I'm wrong about all this, since I'm really not an expert at all on shounen and seinen manga. I'm a shoujo fan. ^^;; Last edited by Wolverine Princess on Wed Mar 15, 2006 3:18 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I'm in Austin and BL/Yaoi is rather big here. There are at least two circles from Texas currently making BL ani-paro work and about four writers I know of making a living writing alternative manga/comics who reside in Texas. There are numerous shops in Austin stocking BL manga, not to mention some of them actually import 'Yaoi' doujinshi for their adult customers. There's plenty of BL works at Texas cons [Oni, Ushi, and the upcoming A-Kon] I've always sold my BL works very quickly! As a matter of fact I do better at Ushi with 'yaoi' doujinshi than any other con I participate in. Sometimes I think Austin's in a bubble... |
