I loved that one too, Beltane70. Although I figured out the conceit of the episode pretty quickly.
So I finished Patlabor 1 the Movie... and was absolutely blown away. Yes, I saw it before but remembered virtually nothing, so it may as well have been my first time. And, of course, this time I'm much more familiar with the Patlabor world than I was back then. I don't know if I had even seen the original OVAs when I saw the movie. Anyway, doesn't matter. I knew the production values would kick ass compared to the TV series given the far greater resources a movie has versus a TV episode, but my God did this movie look great! The detail in the artwork was absolutely stunning. Also interesting to see how Oshii cribbed from himself for Ghost in the Shell which he did six years later. Especially the segments where Matsui and his partner were poking around Tokyo, looking through Hoba's 26 apartments, you could really see the parallels. What a pity that Japan does not make SF movies like this any more. |

I've finished the 2 series I've been watching this season.
Spice & Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf. 3 of the 4 arcs were remakes of 3 of the arcs from the originals back in the late noughties and, generally, they weren't as fresh. The production quality was arguably better; however the banter, in particular, wasn't as sharp or witty. For instance the new version dropped the "What are we doing now? - We're going to bed - Be gentle" sequence in the third arc. Still we got a new arc, and that was a treat. I don't want to sound too negative - any Spice and Wolf is fantastic. Rating: excellent. The Magical Girl and The Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Arch-enemies. Pretty artwork and some sharp parody of the magical girl genre that occasionally lands isn't enough to overcome the show's triteness and the shortcomings of the two dull leads. Happily the episodes were only 12 minutes long. Rating: not really good I've also started watching some 2019 anime: finished Chihayafuru 3 (rating: very good), watching Fate/Grand Order -Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia- (because Rin Tohsaka / Ishtar) and plan to watch Dororo (it was on sale at Crunchyroll). I'll report on them when I've finished all 3.
I love that sequence. |

At a very opportune time, there is your 'Anybody Else Watching Less Anime These Days?' thread on the anime forum. I have read articles and manga about the 'I think that perhaps I am still an otaku, but recently I cannot watch anime for one reason or another (for example, maybe due to my lacking energy to watch anime)' syndrome. I, too, may have developed this syndrome. So these days I watch few anime.
Hmm...this is rather a difficult question. In a sense, I am rather 'emotionless' to and detached from anime. So I should think that I may not have any particular favourite anime. Sorry, nothing comes to mind right now. |

No worries, shosakukan, I was just being nosy, anyway! It's certainly nice having somebody like yourself around who understands Japanese and who obviously doesn't mind researching certain matters.

I finally finished my watching of the Patlabor TV and am now getting started on the original OVA series. Even though I watched the first four, it's been so long that I watched them that it will feel like I'm viewing them for the first time.

Thank you.
Like The Kindaichi Case Files' Kindaichi Hajime's being a grandson of famous (fictional) detective Kindaichi Kōsuke, Hasegawa Jūzō in Cyber City Oedo 808 might be a descendant of Hasegawa 'Onihei' Heizō. It is kinda funny if Hasegawa Jūzō reads Onihei Hankachō on a Kindle-like tablet in his office. Wait, Hasegawa Jūzō lights his cigarette with a 20th century-style lighter, so he may be a guy who prefers old-fashioned stuff, and he may read Onihei Hankachō bunkobon paperbacks. Since his lighter also functions as a watch, actually, his lighter may be a high-tech gadget which is fit for the chief of a special police unit in the 29th century, though. |

Finished Patlabor: The New Files, the 16 episode OVA series that followed the TV series. Other than the 4-episode Griffin arc that starts it off, it was pretty wacky. Reminded me a bit of Full Metal Panic? Fomoffu because the non-Griffin episodes were pretty light and breezy and not particularly serious. Heck there was even one episode (the one where thanks to a convenient typhoon, Goto and Nagumo had to shack up in a love hotel overnight) where you didn't see a Patlabor at all. Clearly these being OVA episodes instead of designed for broadcast TV gave them a bit more license to be chill with the action. The final episode did have a somber revelation, however, so it wasn't all fun and games. Anyway, a highly enjoyable watch, I must say. Two of my faves (beside the love hotel one) were some of the gang adopting a cat and the one where factionalism broke out among the maintenance division after their porn and other goodies got burned.

Been watching As Miss Beelzebub Likes It the past few days and currently on episode 10. Saying it's largely just fluff is a bit of an understatement considering the personality quirks of the titular heroine and the various characters found in the hell-like Pandemonium, as well as several characters seemingly having romantic interest in one another. These kinds of comedies aren't my cup of tea and iffy if I'll revisit this one, but down to the final couple episodes and plan to finish it up tomorrow.
Will be keeping tabs on Fall anime over the next couple weeks to see if there's anything of interest to latch onto. |

Rewatched Patlabor 2 The Movie... wow... just wow. What a godly visual experience. I saw it in the theatre years ago but clearly didn't have the level of appreciation I have for it now. It's the kind of film that makes me want to actually study it, to pull it apart to see how it works. I don't know if I'll follow through with this, but I'm tempted to rewatch it again with the dub track on and sound off so that all I'm seeing on the screen is the art and then freeze framing whenever I want to take a really close look at something. I can't tell you how rare it is for me to feel that way about a film but this one invites that kind of scrutiny. My only complaint is on the emotional level: it's a tonally cold film without the habitual warmth that suffuses the OVAs and the TV series and I did miss that. But the sheer artistry on display does compensate, I suppose. It's a thematically meaty piece of work and I look forward to tucking into the supplemental materials of the Limited Edition to expand my understanding of the film.

Finally got through Netflix's Kimi ni Todoke OVA. That sounds like it was a chore, but I don't mean it that way, just that with hour-long episodes it was hard to find time to sit through one while keeping up with other series. I really did enjoy it.
It kind of got off to a slow start, which also didn't help my motivation, while waiting for Sawako to be just a teeeeny weeeeeeeny bit more assertive, which I know is a huge ask. Also, people not talking to each other and just thinking everything was frustrating, but that's how these things roll and I knew what I was signing up for. Everything got better by the end. |

I finished a rewatch of Cowboy Bebop this week. First time watching the show in fifteen years. What an absolute classic. It hits harder when you are older. Something I didn't remember was that every episode feels like a mini-movie, with the creation of a whole set of characters and setting you'd never see again.
I'm totally rewatching Samurai Shamploo at a later date. And in more recent anime, yesterday, I watched the latest My Hero Academia episode. This show has turned so mid, as the kids these days say. I remember that around Season 2 and 3, it was my favorite modern shonen and now it's just a bit "meh". I always enjoyed the more light-hearted arcs and this final arc is all serious, all the time. The manga is already done and the adaptation is not far from the end so I wonder if they are going to adapt the show with a final, shorter final season or do the dreaded feature film to stretch the ending as much as possible. |

This is the weirdest thing I've seen all year (still, I want one of those tiny giraffes). Unfortunately the subs are in black font which sometimes makes them nearly unreadable. Six minutes, check it out.

Well that was different. TIL that ferrets are just fluffy lizards and llamas are just a form of fluffy giraffe.

They did have lizardy eyes though, so you can tell they're not ferrets. I also wouldn't say no to one of those turtles around the house (lol when the Roomba cruised up to it). But I noped out on the fluffysapiens.

I've been watching some shows but a notable one that I just finished is From the New World. An interesting, very thought-provoking show that I think really comes together in the last 5 or so episodes, but I felt like it kinda struggled to get to that point. It's a show that's very good at worldbuilding, but maybe not as good in other areas. It tries to get the viewer invested into its world largely through its characters but the, sort of, moment to moment writing is its weak point. Like the connective tissue that holds the story together, that connects the bigger plot points together is a bit weak. The broader strokes of the story are strong, but obviously most of the screen time is spent on characters interacting, action scenes etc. All of that is kinda subpar and it's why I felt like the story really struggled early on to get me invested. It also has some weird direction and odd animation that particularly makes the actiony parts a bit confusing. Really zoomed in camera, odd cuts and sometimes a rushed feel makes those actiony parts have a very odd flow to them. It's difficult for me to put into words, but a lot of it feels like budget-saving efforts.
All in all a good anime that has a nice payoff if one sticks with it. |
