Anyway, my two cents. Contrats to everyone who got nominated. The Eisners are a big deal. Eisner is to America almost to what Tezuka is to Japan. Sadly, it seems he doesn't get as much reconition by fans. Then again, I just came back from an anime con (in the US) filled with too many young fans who likley don't know who Tezuka is.

As great as he was Eisner's influence on US comics is small compared to the impact Tezuka had. Obviously "creating" the first graphic novel was a huge deal and much of his work on The Spirit was light-years ahead of his time, but I doubt that anyone in world comics can match the influence that Osamu had (even Hergé). But it isn't a big deal since both creators were immeasurably talented.

While I haven't read East Coast Rising, I will say that her work in American Virgin is mindbogglingly good. I can't imagine how anyone could lump her in with manga, though. Is she manga simply because Tokyopop released her book? Because there's nothing even remotely manga-style about her artwork...

Sure there is. That's like saying there's no manga influence in Frank Miller's artwork just because he doesn't use big eyes. "Traditional" (in other words, stereotypical) visual influence? Maybe not, but I'm sure you know there are plenty of different art styles that can be seen as an influence in Cloonan's drawing style (probably a calligraphy and traditional art influence as well, like Paul Pope). Also, ECR is different from American Virgin in that you can see a more distinct manga influence on it's visual storytelling (not so much in shading, though it did kind of remind me of Hiroaki Samura). Anyways, she's part of a kind of "OEL clique" with people like Jennifer Quick, and I don't see the point of fussing over a label that just means "comic" in a different language.

Well, my surprise was that I misread the article and thought Cloonan was being nominated as a quote-unquote "manga" artist, but she was nominated for "Best New Series"....manga had nothing to do with it. Anyway, I'm not about to start another "is OEL manga?" debate, I was just surprised to see Cloonan included in that group because her work on American Virgin doesn't strike me as manga-esque. That's the only point I was trying to make.
