Episode 4 was pretty fun. I liked the slice of life moments and the gang just having a fun time with each other. I laughed at Saki getting a cold because she was acting like a bad ass on top of a tower during a cold night. Yuuki is a fun addition though I find her as a bit sus at times (her memory issues are unfortunate). Seems like we are getting some flashbacks about Haruto and the ninjas next time.

My only gripe is all the lore about former organisations making me feel a tad lost but I don't think it really matters.

Episode 4

Yes, I quite enjoyed this episode, too. In fact, it convinced me that I'd like to see the other Grisaia titles, so I went to ebay. I found a legit copy of The Fruit of Grisaia pre-owned on DVD and ordered it, and I ordered a DVD set from Malaysia that I guess is a bootleg? It contains Fruit, Eden of Grisaia, the 47-minute special Labyrinth of Grisaia, what they call Grisaia: Phantom Trigger the Animation The Movie (which I assume is the 2 episode OVA) and Grisaia: Phantom Trigger the Animation - Stargazer (sequel to the OVA). I'm sure the Chinese subtitles will come in real handy. I hope the English subs aren't too brutal, but we'll see.

I just like the humour of the interplay between the girls. I actually don't really give a crap about the action stuff. Apparently there are dark back stories which scares me a bit, but I guess I'll just have to suck it up.

Just note, there's no meaningful plot continuity between the original 3 series and Phantom Trigger, so if you want to get caught up for the weekly show, you may want to start with the Phantom Trigger OVAs, then do the original at your leisure.

Makes sense to me. And I just realized something... the cast of characters in Fruit, Eden and Labyrinth is not the same as in Phantom Trigger is it? I had assumed they were all the same girls. It's okay if its not because I think the style of humour will be the same so I suspect I will also enjoy the dynamic and interplay of those characters.

Thanatos carries over and is something of a spoiler for Fruit etc. That's essentially it. The vibes are very similar between the two narratives though. It goes some weird and wild (and dark) places. As ever, the original VN games for Fruit/Lab/Eden can be a bit overwrought and verbose, but they do flesh out the themes and characters better. The anime series are all a little rushed.

As noted, above, the girls are all different. The girls in the first set of Grisaias kind of surround a male lead, where Phantom Trigger moves its "male lead" over to side-character territory. So in that sense, I kind of enjoy Phantom Trigger better than the first Grisaia anime (though the VNs let them interact with each other a lot more than the anime has time for: They're all nuts and love taking advantage of each others' nuttiness to screw with each other)

Huh, a self hypnosis ability that makes you create an illusionary sword and your belief/self hypnosis is so strong that said sword can cut through anything (or rather alter reality)..... that sure is an ability. The previous episodes had plenty of non realistic action but that seems like an ability I would expect to find in Bleach. Anyway, episode 5 was a tad rushed but exciting. I like how the big bad went out like a chump while the other bad guys just disappeared?

Episode 5

Well, that certainly sucked that Murasaki's parents got kilt, especially her blind mom who seemed pretty cool. Looking forward to my Grisaia bootleg to show up so I can check out the Phantom Trigger OVAs.

Given episode 6 we are in for another flashback arc and I have to admit that I am not sure if I like two of those back to back. Yeah, it fills me in on what happened in the past and how a few of the characters grew up but it really takes the spotlight away from the current day team for a bit too long. As for the episode itself... the weird balance between rather disturbing yet happy fun times is unique.

Episode 6

I agree with you, smurky. Flashback arcs kill and present day momentum. Back when the show started, I assumed Chris was going to be the main focus but I was clearly wrong on that score. Anyway, I am curious about how Aoi died and presumably we'll find out next week.

Episode 7

You know what? I have a sneaking suspicion that Aoi isn't actually dead. We know that Haruto was told that, but I'm not sure it's true. Suspiciously, her "corpse" was already gone by the time he showed up. Maybe there is some reason why Aoi wants (almost) everybody to think she's dead? Obviously, Blonde Principal would have to be in on the ruse. Hmm, I guess we'll see. I also thought that a main storyline was starting (hunting down the two traitors) but then the preview seems to belie that.

My Malaysian Grisaia bootleg showed up a few days ago, so I was able to watch the two Phantom Trigger OVAs as well as Stargazer. Surprising, both the video quality and subtitle quality weren't too shabby. In fact, the subtitles for the two OVAs were fine but the Stargazer subs were definitely rockier. Still easy to follow, though. Anyway, certainly not essential viewing for enjoying the present series, but I liked them all and appreciate having the background details. Also checked out the first four episodes of The Fruit of Grisaia. Totally different cast and way, way, way less violence, but also quite fun. The comedic tone and fun character relationships are very similar. Not quite sure how I missed this when in came out in 2014. The show really won me over in the first episode when the male MC spoiler[walked into his room and saw a female's bare breasts... and neither party freaked out]. That might be an anime first.

Media (not just anime) of the past 10 to 12 or so years have taught me to never count someone as dead unless you see a body, said body is confirmed to really be that person and said body does not disappear. Add to that the anime being about overpowered spies/special agents and I would be really surprised if she is actually dead.

I commend you for going so far in order to see those Blood, these days most people tend to use other sources to see what they have missed. Not to mention that bootleg is always a question mark in the quality of what you get.

Yeah, I knew I was taking a bit of risk, but on the other hand, the cost wasn't huge so even if it hadn't worked out, I wasn't going to be out of pocket for a big amount. I really don't like buying bootlegs and rarely do, but it was the only way for me to get a physical copy of the OVAs and Stargazer. Plus it was the only way for me to get a physical copy of Eden and Labyrinth without having to sell a kidney. I was able to find a used legit copy of Fruit fairly cheaply though.

I haven't checked out Eden or Labyrinth on the bootleg yet so God knows what the subs will be like on those. But I was so encouraged with what I saw from the Phantom Trigger stuff that I've rolled the bones again and ordered a bootleg of a very obscure anime called Agū: Tensai Ningyō which came out in 2018. I must have seen the first few episodes on a pirate site and then waited to see if it got a legit release somewhere which it never did. Again, not a huge amount of money at risk here, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the subs will be at least at bootleg Stargazer level.

Amane is a whole lot of everything. Her arc later in the season is probably the best constructed too.

Ep7 was... I dunno... kinda boring? I guess a problem with the sorta quasi-episodic structure of this show with mini-arcs that are essentially unconnected means we don't get all that invested in any given plot line. It has a very Grisaia vibe while it thinks heavy thoughts on the nature of justice, but then it comes to no particular conclusion before, it looks like, moving on to a different traumatic backstory next week. Maybe it'll loop back around and tie up these various themes and threads at the back end of the season, but I'm not really sure it's that interested in that.

Episode 8 gets back into the current timeline (besides the jolly flashback at the start). It was an interesting episode in that it was more of the weird mix of happy slice of life fun and the more than a little messed up reality of their work. The episode showcased how the girls train and also how they cope with what they do. Shiori ironically might be the most unstable one despite being the sensei.
