I wonder is this good or bad publictyfor anime? I also want to know out of all the things they could have used to fill the screen they used anime...I am very surprised...in a good way.

It's not publicity at all, IMO. If anything it's just an easter egg-type thing that the producers (or maybe even the director) added in. And I have to cosign on whoever said that it'd be easy enough to get a sample/royalty/license cleared (whatever the terminology is for tv). It probably costed Fox about $7...

Though I doubt someone would really identify it as anime if someone were to notice they might bring it up. There's always people out there who notice this kind of stuff though I don't really know why I said anything since it being brought up is very slim. Smile

I think you forget, for celebrities and tv shows (particularly fad ones), any publicity is good publicity. One of the actors got raped? Just make sure to drop the show name. One of the characters saved a puppy from drowning in the river? Just make sure they mention what station it's on.

It sounds stupid, but this is an absolutely undeniable fact in today's pop culture world. The only thing that matters is the number of times you hear it, and how strongly you react to hearing it, not how you react. Though... there are certainly exceptions (just look at Tom Cruise. I simply cannot enjoy his movies any more, and one of them is in my top three favorites of all time).

Absolutely nothing. It seems to me they just put it in there because it was an anime or just trying to see reactions of those who actually know what it is. Which a lot of people in this country don't offhand.

Actually, The O.C. does have a long history of comic book, anime and Asian cinema references going back to the early episodes of the first season. In fact, Seth's other love interest Anna was an anime fan with one of the first references being her calling Marissa "Princess Mononoke" at a dance.

The recent "Cool Devices" scene was with Ryan's new girlfriend Taylor Townsend. Taylor is a tad nuts as it is, so I'm not surprised that she would want to watch Cool Devices with Ryan after giving a copy of the Kama Sutra to Summer to help spice up Summer and Seth's relationship last season.

[And yes, I know this thread was almost a month old...but I had to chime in...]

Yeah I must say I think that your right, well you know the OC is normally know for it's edgy material. I know that often times the same show will air on the TV when it's during the show, but a hentai title....fox playing a little joke or what?

It was probably the producer's idea to send a subiminal message to viewers. Producers always send subiminal messages in movies, tv shows etc. to get people to do something, such as in this case "Go watch Hentai..."

That's surprising indeed.

I hope that it doesn't mean anything deregatory or what not.........or is it?

That was Cool Devices alright. I wonder if the actors knew it was hentai?

well, if they didn't know when they put in the dvd, by the time it was over they did xP i'm shocked tho, i dont know which is more shocking to me, the fact they used anime (good shocked) as a background tv filler, or that they used hentai (bad shock) which kinda gives anime a bad public image to anyone who isnt well aware of the diffrence between the two (ie. someone who dosnt know that a hentai is "adult" anime")

wow, calling someone princess mononoke at a dance on a popular show. oh man i didn't follow the show at all, but if i had been hanging out with that type of crowd and heard about that, it wouldve hit a nerve REALLY HARD. but i wouldnt ever hang out with preps like that, so it doesnt really count. seriously.

but why the hell did they show hentai in the background? if someone did that in real life, the girl would most likely get up and leave, unless she's a fan herself. i know someone already said that, but thats just wierd. who the **** thought of that!? and all this other stuff for that matter!?

why the hell cant people just leave anime alone??

Dude, you say normally a girl would get up and leave? A girl has one in a couple billion mind sets that could make her easily not care what's on the TV, like it, love it, hate it, get sick by it, and any other number of things she could do. It's all random.
