Good for them...

Now if only this type of thinking could be applied here in the US where thought is SUPPOSED to be free, and not kept locked away by the thought police, this country may advance a little...

But in reality, what did this actually accomplish? What terms and conditions had to be met so this library couold loan these books out to the younger generation?

I can understand that libraries shouldn't control what one reads, but why would a library carry these books if they don't want the younger generation to read them.

Well, that sucks. But again, the libraries shouldn't have carried the titles in the first place (if there was such a concern).

I don't like this.

If it's not sexually explicit, that's no problem, but libraries don't loan sexually explicit heterosexual pornography to minors; why should there be an exception just because the lovers are both male?

Yeah, it's censorship, but why on earth do 12 year old girls need to read pornography? People say things like "well, it's up to the parents to censor things," but if parents are OK with their kids reading porno, they can go buy it for them. It's a LOT easier for kids to go behind their parents' backs in libraries.

I think that if there can be manga about Girls/Boy,
why not Boy/Boy or Girl/Girl?
It is strange that minors can get a hold of the graphic novels, but the books shouldn't be restricted because of that.
If the books have intense sexuality, however, I would hold those books to the same restrictions for readers that they have to go through at a movie or buying a rated M video game.

Or maybe we can stop having libraries all together and destroy all knowledge, just because some of it may contain sex.

i guess i'm one of the few people left with some sort of decency , i just dont think its right to loan out sexually explicit material to kids. but i forget that youre the same crowd that thinks it should be OK to own child rape manga.

and by the way kokuryu, when you use cliches like "thought police", you make yourself look like an idiot and prove you have no idea what youre talking about. i dont see how allowing kids to look at gay porn manga is going to help us "advance".

The best solution would be to move these books onto shelves so high that younger readers can't possibly reach them. Heck, I know that my local bookstore does that for Step Up Love Story...

Well, I don't know about over in Japan, but most libraries in the states allow the parents to put restrictions on their kids library cards so they won't be allowed to check out certain materials. It's not like the parents have no say whatsoever what the kid takes home, but the library shouldn't play the parent.

Yes because every thing that involves sex is "porn." If that's the case can we please keep the Bible out of the hands of minors too?

Also the fact you have to call someone an idiot in a debate probably means you never graduated the thrid grade since you have no other way to create your own argument.

Yes! Victory for freedom!

Censorship in all forms should be eradicated. Progress like this makes me happy. Smile

I dont buy the 'all yaoi = porn therefore it should not be on shelves' argument. There is plenty of shoujo manga or even prime time TV shows that are equally explicit as most mainstream yaoi titles. Keep the lighter titles with everything else, and put the 18+ stuff elsewhere, or just dont carry it at all. it only takes a quick flip through to figure out whether or not it is appropriate.

The titles in question here, while they do contain some non-sexual material, mostly concerns yaoi that DOES happen to be porn. Not everything that has sex is porn, but everything that happens to include shots of genitalia in action (censored or uncensored) and is written to be titillating probably SHOULD be considered pornography.

Shots of boys kissing isn't the issue in this case.

Do you know how many books contain exactly what you describe in word form? Probably tens of thousands and you can check them all out at your local library with no problem. Why does art have to be held to different standards than word? And if we hold art to that standard, does that mean that written word is next? And there's also the fact that women usually get more sexually out of printed word than something that is illustrated, yet the men who comment on this like yourself probably don't even comprehend that. The idea of this becoming some kind of plague on society is utterly ridiculous since we're talking about people looking at sex they can't have since most of the readers are female girls (waits for the girls can get it from the back argument Rolling Eyes). Honestly, if I had a daughter who read this kind of stuff I honestly wouldn't care becuase reading manga with gay sex would be a good alternative to actually having straight sex with a real boy. And don't come at me with this it will get them interested in sex nonsense. Honestly, the conservatives can try to suppress teen interest in this subject for the next million years and it will never do any good. You may as well take up alchemy and try to see if there's still a way to turn copper into gold. But instead of trying to fund better birth control that would solve stuff like teen pregnancy they try to spend money to force us all to act like puritans.

Really? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the article, specifically this part:
Quote:
The city's seven libraries has 5,499 volumes of boys-love material (stories about gay male relationships), including about 100 volumes with nude depictions of explicit sex.

Sounds to me like most stuff is NOT porn. Or is there some rule that all boys-love manga must involve sex and must be porn (at least partially)? I'm seriously asking this since I've never read any manga about male/male relationships, and I don't plan to start either (girl/girl is a whole different story) so I really don't know.
