Robotech (dat name) + Hollywood = No.
Robotech + James Wan = Hell yes!

Macross Plus is my favorite OVA so go and watch that. The japanese dub is the way to go of course but they got Heisenberg to voice the lead in the american dub. Lol.

Well, at least there won't be no white-washing. Laughing

Beat: You can't release the film in Asia without calling it Macross. And even if some elements have been changed, if the story resembles Macross in any way, I imagine the Japanese Macross owners will sic their legal dogs on Sony pretty quickly.

Good luck on them. Sony is a big dog, even in Japan.......... especially in Japan.

I seriously doubt this will even get past the script writing process knowing harmony gold is, they're probably going to demand a royalty fee of something close to 80 - 98% of all profits from the movie and any DVD/BD sales just for mentioning robotech

And good luck on them too, bully big dog Sony if they try to do that. They need Sony more than Sony needs them.

With Harmony Gold, it's debatable if this thing will actually get made.

Harmony Gold's role in all this is to cash the big check that Sony sent them.

I think the Harmony Gold haters believe if they keep using HG's name over and over the movie will not be made.

But it is a Sony movie. Sony has the cards. Sony may plow the fields ahead of the movie to smooth things over, Sony may juggernaut through the IP issues (they are not going to be sued by Japan, no matter who says so), or Sony will just make a generic space movie using the Robotech name on it (and that will be a marketing decision).

People are assuming that it's going to be about the Zentraedi and Rick/Hikaru and Minmei...it's not. The lawyers are gonna ensure that. It's not going to be a LA Macross.

It's going to be Shadow Chronicles 2: MORE Made-Up Crap!

From James "Franchises R Us" Wan, the director of Saw, Insidious and the Conjuring, now hired on Universal's "pet" F&F franchise because of his expertise in stringing other movie franchises into never-ending corporate brandnames!
(Case in point, Warner/DC's reportedly looking at him for an Aquaman movie, just in case we suddenly don't hate that depressingly wrong Bat-vs.-Super thing.)

Tempest: Edge of Tomorrow's not based on an anime.

Which completely defeats the purpose of buying the Robotech name.

They were only buying what Harmony Gold was selling.

I'm pretty sure this will have an original story with original concepts, with maybe a nod at best to the original anime. Though like others have said, that may not necessarily be a bad thing.

Even still, this is also Sony we're talking about. They're now by far the biggest company in the Macross/Robotech game.

To use something like Robot Chicken as a benchmark, they've done Jem, He-Man, Voltron and a host of other 80s nostalgia, but I doubt they'd ever do Robotech. .

They did Ranma 1/2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3U8SKJwMNA8

They also did Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, but those are arguably just as mainstream as Voltron (if not more).

Actually, Warner was the biggest company. Sony's a freaking joke at this point.

Or, more accurately, whatever HG owned and invented for the Macross-arc Robotech dub.

(Like in the opening of Shadow Chronicles, where one of the two new-generation pilots annoys the other during maneuvers by humming old Lynn Minmay hits.
Yes, Minmay with an A-Y, ie. he only references the only two English songs she ever sang on the dub series.)
