Artwork side of the box out for me as well. I love the look of all the various colors on my shelves. Although, lately I've had to use some library/bookstore magic tricks to get all my stuff to fit on the shelves.
Long series or franchises for instance: 
...will often take up more space if stacked spine/artwork out, but if you have a deep enough shelf you can do that. The other 3 seasons of Ikki Tousen are behind the season 1 box there. The downside is obviously that all your stuff will not be on direct display.
