Right, first they try to get rid of comedians (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1389288,00.html) and now they turn to manga.
What's next?
My comment is meant to be somewhat sarcastic. Anyway, if the manga was really screened then I don't see what the problem is. Besides, I think that some of the content that is sometimes considered "bad" is actually good for a growing mind.

hmm deja vu Wink news must be extremely slow lately if I posted about this 2 weeks ago animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11053&postdays=0&postorder=asc&topic_view=&start=0 the morning it came out.

You can check my views on this on that thread. But you should know that anything scares The Daily Mail any excuse to make a big deal out of nothing.

The UK Reading Soceity states that it has screened the manga to make sure that the content of the recommended titles is appropriate fro 13-16-year-olds, but the Daily Mail goes on to suggest that the children will become hooked on manga and go on to seek more violent and pornographic manga.

Well, duh! How do you think it works in Japan? Granted, not all children will read manga when they get older, but there's definately a correlation. I mean, it's not like adult manga was there to begin with, it took 30+ years for that demographic to have relative popularity.

Wow. The article seems to have been created just to push people into believing that all manga is bad. Everybody doesn't want to read only literature classics, they want variety. Let's hope this doesn't spread over here.

Slow news day (nothing to post) so I figured I'd point this one out despite it being a bit old now...

You know,I bet a "slow news day" is what caused that tabloid to run the story in the first place. Just one of those days where they can't think of a new way to humilate the royal family, so they dig up some story that was probably written and shelved a month before, and try to manufacutre a controversy, thus giving them more "news" to cover (not to mention the right to brag about how they were the first to report on how manga is destroying the world.)

It's always the newer art forms that get hit with this kind of nonesense. Here in the US you see people all up in arms about violent video games (gee, that's awful, there should really be a ratings system-oh, wait) and anime (because if kids are going to watch violence, it should be good old american violence, by gum!) but hardly anyone complains about violence in movies, books or live-action TV, because these are "established" mediums and people of all ages enjoy them too much to complain.

A generation from now, manga, anime and video games will have earned that kind of immunity and the moral watchdogs will have to find something new to whine about.

if manga encourages children of becoming violent, then it means that something is wrong with your child and you shouldn't blame it on the manga.

If they are gonna whine about murder, rape and all, i think that violence in movies and all has a bigger impact on children than a few manga's

I really can't stand this kind of sterotype. This is just one kind of manga.

The manga I've seen have some tongue and cheek humor (ie. Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, CLAMP). Maybe they should read some of Osama Tezuka's works (Tetsua Atom).

Maybe the NY Post should learn something about the British Tabloids.

Get your facts straight.

The thing one has to remember is that Manga Entertainment UK actively encouraged this kind of PR throughout the 90s, as the attention and infamy gave them sizable sales boosts in the short term. Manga Videos were the stuff "your parents didn't want you to watch", and if a title was too mild, they'd just add swearing to the dub so it'd get a higher BBFC age rating. Unfortunatly, the stigma still sticks, even long after Manga UK's glory days have ended.

As usual, the papers talk shit.
Living in the UK, I just don't bother reading newspapers, I use the Internet and TV.
20 Years ago, they tried to blame RPG's like D&D for "Turning my son to SATAN".

Then Video games came the next target.

Anime was next, and now Manga.

They ought to read The Golden Ass, written circa 150AD, it covers rape, gay rape, bestiality murder and virtually every other sexual deviancy. You can buy it from most book sellers, at any age!

I don't think the guy who wrote that article has even read any Manga, just looked up a few things on the Internet.

This type of press didn't kill RPG's, Anime or Video games. It won't kill Manga.

Everyone knows tabloids are rubbish anyways, so I don't see how this merits a debate. If this was an article posted in an actual NEWSpaper, then I might get upset.

Great another thing someone wants to attack. Really I must say it's you yourself who controls your mind. Watch violents or read violent even in manga, but it doesn't mean you have to put it in the mind. Just yesterday I was watching Dune and this fight scene came on and my mom was like "don't watch so much of bloodiness or you'll turn into one." I was surprised and confused. I was barely even thinking of doing such a thing because I've made it clear to myself I won't take in such acts. Some people don't realize one doesn't take in something into the mind and let it take over. Of course their are lunatics out there who do but it doesn't give someone the right to worry everyone else when some put a block to such things.

Good topic, actually I've been getting media studies for my BAT/EMMA and just did research on Media on how they put Games in the bad light.

In the passed there have been some very unfortunant Youth Violance Crimes, Columbine High-school incident to name one which occured in 1999. But the trouble with media and "friends" on putting games in a negative light has been going on way before that.
For example, D. Grossman a respected author has wrote a book called On Killing in 1995, which is about the US FATS which are actually point and shoot devices, which are the same for example like the TimeCop, House of the dead or Resident Evil arcade shooters, some consoles have this as well. Grossman made his point that children are learning the same way to shoot a gun as the police was learning with their FATS (Fire Arms Training Simulator) and thus are desensitizing the children playing these games like Time Crisis and House of the Dead.
He says he has proof of this with studies, I believe they aren't true because the enviorment these tests are done are different then where the children play these games, they are done on a short time schedual so it doesn't portrait the long term effects and a lot of those tests where done by people who are against violent games in the first place.

Counter studies have been comitted by different researchers and organisations IDSA to name but one of them.

They say there is no compelling evidence that estblishes a link between playing games and aggressive behavior. In Fact, the most objective comprehensive reviews of research find no such link. Additional objective indicators also support that conlusion.
Youth violance in America has fallen dramatically at the same time that game sales have skyrocketed.
The same games sold in the US are sold in other countries and the youth violence is sharply lower in those countries.
1999 the Australian goverment preformed the most comprehensive unbiased review ever done of all research on the effect of games and found that "The accumulating evidence - provided largely by researches keen to demonstrate the games undesirable effects does indicate that it is very hard to find such effects that they are unlikely to be substantial.
And on Januari 2001 US Surgeon General D. Satcher released the most exhaustive US goverment study to date on yeath violence from a public health perspective, which found that "The impact of games on violent behavior remains to be determined."
So basically means that games have been proven not to be the cause of youth violence but that it lies elsewhere.

Since Games are portrait as being more evil than Manga, movies and TV, what will the small "side effects" be from reading Manga?

Then there's sex subject.
If you look at certain mediums for example tapes.
There used to be 3 types, BetaMax, V2000 and VHS, where VHS is the worst of them all, why did VHS thrived?

BetaMax was used in the proffessional industry, V2000 made by Philips acted to much control out over what was being sold through that medium and VHS just made video players/recorders and tapes and couldn't care less about the content.
Movies with sex did the best on VHS, hey look VHS came out the best.
Moving along, CD-I vs DVD... CD-I again something from Philips, again they act the same strong control on content.
CD-I didn't do well, didn't allow sex. Now I believe CD-I has dropped the control on content so there are CD-I's with sex on them, this includes other things as well, the French with their phone and little screen, some companies used it for selling something with sex related, does give a whole other twist to phonesex doesn't it?

Point is, sex sells and the products that can transfer it the best will sell really well as well and the question shouldn't be, why is it bad? but instead asking why it is doing so well?

For the media it doens't matter it's a complex system that adjust accordingly.
Weird "thing" this media actually is.

First, its true that of using manga to hook children on reading let's say, Tolstoi or Conrad, its just hilarious Laughing . It would be useful in art class, or maybe civical classes, althought.

Second, there are always silly "reporters" (those who buy the title or do favors to get the job) everywhere, tv, radio, and in UK, USA, Mexico, etc. I'm puzzled that he didn't faint when typing "ince..." And there is always a "Moral Hygiene Comitee" the ones that are always saying: Pokemon is satanic, Resident Evil is evil. They have a lot of free time, I'm starting to think that theyre being paid to do that just to have a polemic and sales. And there are always parents that ride the wave. Sure it's not normal to give 18+ explicit material to children, but if a children searches it, they have their reasons (if you know what I mean, look at my last line).

Anyway, if manga would be accepted as well as disneasaurus, it would be cheaper and mainstream, in USA and then in Mexico (where I live). But it's growing anyway, I just hope I never see a "Mickey Manga adaptation", those guys are capable.

Pornography doesn't make perverts.
Perverts make pornography. Twisted Evil
