Are there any anime you've seen before, possibly a long time ago that you fear won't be as good as you remember them?

In the "What are you watching right now" thread someone brought up Speed Grapher. I remember this being one of the most kickass shows I've ever seen, but everyone tells me otherwise. I'm scared of paying for the Viridian collection, because even if it is hella cheap, my idea of my first seinen anime will be demolished.

I also have a fond recollection of Mythical Detective Loki a show that was hot on fansubs (from what I hear) back in the day, but no one even remembers. It was one of the first anime I ever got with my Comcast On Demand package and I remember loving it. However, when I look at the episode descriptions, it reminds me of everything I dislike about anime.

Man, I had that problem with the first four seasons of Digimon maybe 4 years or so ago. I'd remembered fondly watching them when I was a kid, coming home everyday on the bus, running or sledding down the hill, and watching an hour of Digimon. Digimon is the reason I knew of saturday morning cartoons! I saw through season 4 in middle school, I don't care if I'm 5 minutes late to school, it's Digimon Frontier time! But yeah, I did rewatch them, and I found that I still enjoyed them I was quite pleased! Although I enjoyed some aspects more than others and some less than I had in the past and season 2, which when I was a kid I wasn't as big on due to the kids being able to return to the real world and that somehow being wrong in my mind as a kid, ended up being my favorite season upon rewatching all four.

@KanjiiZ

Speed Grapher is a very kick ass show!! Sure it can be cheezy and the art style is kind of weird, but the show is just good, campy fun! I actually think it's one of Gonzo's best shows lol. If you can find the Viridian Collection for cheap, then I'd go for it! It also has a very (IMO) satisfying ending, which seems to always be a huge problem for me when watching anime.

As for anime I'm scared to watch. I'm scared to watch the original Dragon Ball Z. It was pretty much my life as a kid, but now I think the filler would just destroy my attention span. All the more reason to give Kai a shot I guess! Very Happy

I don't have any such Anime, because I'm honest enough with myself to say, "Yeah, I liked Title X back in the day, and I still feel Y amount of nostalgia for it now, but it really wasn't all that good". Basically, I can peer through the fog of excitement and see a show for what it really is, which is something a lot of people cannot do. So while I can get excited - even to the point of squealing with delight - I don't let it blind me.

Now, I do continually re-rate shows on a regular basis. A recently example is Crest of the Stars, which I originally rated as a Masterpiece but now I've decided upon quite a bit of thought that it is an Excellent. I did let my initial viewing experience fudge my overall impressions of the series. However, it was only by a small degree, I still enjoy it very much, and I certainly was not afraid to rewatch it. Most of my re-rating is done because my experience constantly grows and my tastes do change over time.

Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok is pretty good, and I have watched it several times.

If I am scared that I won't like a re-watch of a show (or a re-read of a manga) then I usually will get rid of it. Be it sell it to Half-Price Books, E-Bay, or Hastings (when they were not closing down).

Then use the $ (or credit) to buy something new, or have seen before (and loved it).

It has already happened to me in the past- and it considered Yotoden, a title I worshipped since I was 6 years old. I have seen it twice when I was little, and then I forgotabout it. A few years ago I starter searching for it, I was looking for it for absoliute ages (it does not help when you only remotely remember one character's name and nothing else, not even the title or the plot, ). I found it 3/4 years ago, watched it... unnecessarily. The disappointment I felt is impossible to describe. My childhood love got hit by a truck and wasrun over at least a dozen of times. Smile But that is an exception.

Apart from that, there is a few shows that I would give a lower rating than when I first watched it, in some cases, simply because they were excellent when they were being made, but not-so-excellent now. If I rewatch it and dont enjoy it, I just stop to lkeep good memories of it, but I dont think I would be ever afraid to come back to a title really.

My memories of Outlaw star were decimated when I watched it again. Somehow I remembered it being better....

I only try to avoid stuff that I watched when I was ~12.

Stuff like Ronin Warriors or Megaman. Obviously cheesy, terribly dubbed Saturday morning cartoon shows that I could only watch now with lots of friends and lots of booze to make an event out of it.

I've also noticed that a lot of Shoenen series haven't withstood the test of time for me at all. I tried watching some DBZ Kai when it first came out, and I just couldn't get back into it. I used to love DBZ, but not so much anymore.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, some shows I rewatch expecting my memories to be shredded, but it doesn't happen. No matter how many times I rewatch NGE I always expect to hate the early episodes, but somehow enjoy them anyway.

Come on, Ronin Warriors really isn't that bad of a series to rewatch. Sure, it's cheesy, but it does have a certain appeal about it nonetheless. I enjoyed rewatching it. It's certainly not a show I would marathon though - that could definitely be a little rough to say the least.

Out of the anime I own, the only series that I'd be afraid of rewatching is .hack//Sign. I remember it being really neat as a kid (especially since I was into MMOs), but now I'm not so sure it'd hold up to other series I've seen since. That and maybe Blue Seed.

Haibane Renmei. Don't get me wrong, I'll never think this series is anything short of excellent. Thing is, it's currently what I consider to be the best anime I've ever seen. However, I saw it when it first came out in America, in 2003. It was probably the first incredible anime I saw. So, while it will hold up quality-wise, it may not be my favorite anymore.

I honestly thought I would be. However, all the re-watches so far have been a remarkable success, sometimes making me like the series even more. There's always a certain sense of "what if it's not as good as I remember", but it's all pretty recent for me, too, so I haven't had time to completely lose my faith in my memory.

I had the good fortune of getting into anime about half way into my teenage years, so most of the titles that I watched didn't suffer from childhood nostalgia.

I'm also pretty thankful that my favorite childhood anime, Space Battleship Yamato (Star Blazers in the US) has actually held up quite well, at least for me.

Love Hina (actually the manga rather than the anime). Back when I was a very new fan I loved the manga of that to death because the wacky over the top humour and premise seemed fresh and original. Now the scales have fallen from my eyes and I know it will seem like utter shit if I try reading it again.

Another example would be Digimon, which I loved when I was around 12 but will for obvious reasons probably not appreciate now.

There have been times I've rewatched something I didn't think I was going to like any more, only to enjoy it more, however. So it goes both ways.

As someone who just adores Haibane Renmei, I find that your answer is quite odd and curious. I guess that my main reason for finding your answer both odd and curious is that I do my best to categorize my favorites according to genre (this has to do with recommendation purposes -- someone who loves, say, the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise may or may not appreciate Haibane Renmei; and vice versa, of course! Razz ). I guess that my point is I don't have just one, particular favorite; but rather, multiple favorites in different genres. For example, if someone admits to liking classical baroque music, then I will shamelessly plug the OST -- and mention as an aside that the Anime itself ain't half bad, either! Cool

As far as my early memories of Anime are concerned, my first introduction was to Robotech, and one of the things that I was particularly enthralled with was the graphics; so I was rather startled when I found myself concluding recently that the 3rd Robotech War / Invid Invasion section was not as good in that regard as I had recalled it being. Confused

Rurouni Kenshin.

I remembered utterly loving it the first few times I saw it. Then about a year ago when I rewatched it, and realized it was...actually kind of crappy. :/

Yet, the complete opposite happened for another similar show: I used to utterly hate and detest Yu Yu Hakusho. Rewatching it after Kenshin, I realized for some reason, I found it to be considerably more kickass of the rest of the shonen lot.
