Just a question: was Summer Wars intended as a children's film in Japan? I haven't seen it yet myself, so maybe it was. I also suppose it might depend on your definition of "children" (does it include teenagers?). Or is this just the animation ghetto in America again? Anybody who knows, please share.

I'd say teens and adults rather than children. Your guess of the animation ghetto is probably right.

That was a mini-disaster for Summer Wars at the Embarcadero Landmark.
The video froze, and then skipped ahead to the ED credits. We lost about the last three minutes of the movie, which amounted to just about the entire post-climax bit of the film. A friend ended up turning to bit torrent and a fansub in order to see the end of the story. I suppose that the movie could have frozen at an earlier moment, but that's why this was only a _mini_ disaster.
Was Funimation's disc bad, or was it the player at the theater? I lean toward the former, but the disc might have been abused at some other showing or in transit. Has Funimation been supplying a disc for these sorts of things ever since they announced the license? I would have much preferred a film source. The picture seemed to be somewhat fuzzy, so I'm making a guess that this was being upscaled. I'm presuming that it was a DVD being upscaled, but I've never seen BD video on that large of a screen, either. I know that the movie's been hopping all over the place for quite a while now, so I wonder what previous sources have been.
Whatever the non-film source was, I wish that the film festival's promotional info had indicated that we weren't seeing a movie on film, but instead something at a lower resolution. I might have made a different decision on whether or not to buy tickets.

It's the serious version of Digimon's "Our War Game".
