Two things that have me a bit confused: First, the Spanish Civil War itself was "between World War I and World War II", so this tells us nothing as to whether it's a sequel or a prequel. Secondly, and far more important, Porco Rosso ends with the strong implication that spoiler[Marco has been cured of his "pig face"], but refuses to admit it outright. If this movie is a true sequel, and stars Marco, it will have to show spoiler[Marco's face], and that will ruin the ending to the original movie a little bit. (Unless Marco spoiler[wears a mask for the entire film for some reason].) ------RM [Mod Edit: Please tag spoilers. Mmm, not so sure about this one. It seems like Miyazaki's talent has been on the wane for a while now, and the last thing he needs to do is start revisiting old concepts that have already reached their conclusions.
Especially considering that this is Ghibli we're talking about here – if they can't keep going in this business, no one can. |

Porco Rosso is one of my favorite Ghibli movies ever, but I loved how complete it was and I kind of hope this doesn't happen. It's totally odd that Miyazaki is doing sequels now; I vaguely remember reading somewhere that he didn't like them.
Hmm, though if you guys could pick any Studio Ghibli movie to get a sequel, which would you pick? I know lots of people would love to see a more manga-like Nausicaa. Myself, I've always kind of wanted to see what happens to Kiki when she grows up. |

I don't think Miyazaki's talent has been waning. He is getting on in age though, so he can't work as hard on his movies as he used to.
As for Ghibli downsizing, wow, I didn't think they were that desperate. I know they've been looking for (a) successor(s) to Miyazaki for many years now, at least since Kondou's untimely death. Yonebayashi must be one of the people they think will carry Ghibli on. Regarding Porco Rosso: Last Sortie, yeah that is kinda confusing. I thought Porco Rosso took place in/around the Adriatic Sea, not near Spain. I think Miyazaki has earned more than enough reknown to do whatever he wants though, even if it is a sequel of sorts to one of his less successfull movies. |

Mostly likely a sequel set after Marco had to leave Italy. Given the nature of politics at the time of the end of the first movie Spain would have been a good place to go as it was a growing democratic society unlike many other European nations that had become very right wing. I wonder if Antoine de Saint-Exupéry will show up. |

I've seen "Mei and the Kittenbus", and as far I could understand, the film is not a sequel. It takes place within the film's timeframe. And I think people here are taking the whole "downsizing Ghibli" talk a bit too seriously. I'm not calling him a liar or anything, but I think that, at best, Suzuki was greatly exaggerating here. |

Thank goodness The Borrowers has been doing pretty well in Japan. Even if Suzuki's statement was a slight exaggeration, it would have been a sad day if Ghibli decided to start cutting people from their studio and stop making movies. I'll take whatever movies Ghibli puts out, even if they are unnecessary sequels.

Wow. Just how much money does it take to make a Ghibli film and just how much money do they need to make off of them? I was kind of under the impression that Ghibli films alway did well. Greed is a scary thing. |

My impression was that it isn't about Ghibli being in financial trouble, but about keeping up the quality of movies they make when the company's leaders retire. Miyazaki is 69 now, Takahata is 75, and Suzuki is 62. They may make a few movies yet, but they can't just leave the company and expect the animators to be able to direct and produce as well. That kind of work needs someone with a lot of experience. Experience which they will have to gain mostly while working at Ghibli, or else the studio's signature style will change radically.
