I know that there was a controversy with Cardcaptors over witchcraft. If dub was really good and it was ran on kidswb, the controversy would have gotten bigger mainly because of all the weird romances. Also, I think some parents complained about DBZ, but I'm not really sure.

Yes, actually the other day I came across a very old news article about dbz and its so called "Violence." It said that dbz had an immense ammount of violence in it. They must have not watched the series on CN because at that time the blood wasn't really blood, it was just a brown spot. The article was from 2 years ago I believe.

Not really. Seems the US is getting less anal in general concerning these things. It got really bad around The Columbine incident when they took laser guns away from the Transformers, but even then anime wasn't really picked on. I'm sure if DBZ got big in 92' there would've been a big stink over it. The biggest stink I can remember is over some Pokemon cards having nazi like symbols on them. That actually made it on the news. Its not kids who are biggest into anime anyways.

I really hate those columbine killers. Not only because they went on a killing spree, but also because it caused my favorite movie, The Boondock Saints, to be blacklisted from American theaters. It was shown in Japan, Germany, and CANADA for christs sake!
Now you may say, "your worrying about some movie, when all those people were murdered." But believe me, i hate them even more for that.
Somebody really should have gone Alucard on their butts before they did all those murders.

Battle Royale could have been shown it and become a hit if it weren't for 9/11 and Columbine.

Did it really? I only saw it on DVD. Too bad, but I doubt it would have gotten very big; too strange for the mainstream. I'm from Boston, so its even funnier the way they made the people from Southie

Um, no, I seriously doubt Battle Royale ever could have been a hit in the States, partly because it would never make its way into movie theaters. Despite a neat concept, the production values and quality control aren't that high and the subject matter would be way, way too controversial even in a non-Columbine world; you'd have interest groups pitching a fit about it left and right. (It raised a big stink in Japan, IIRC.) I can't see how that movie could ever be anything more in the U.S. than the underground cult hit that it is.

I remember there was some outcry over Cowboy Bebop (I think it was the first episode about drug use) in Japan itself, but I think it died down by the time the anime was released internationally.
Not sure about in the US but here in Singapore, I remember I got one episode of EVA (don't remember the episode number but it's the one where EVA unit 1, the purplish one that Shinji pilots, got its arm ripped off in a fight but then it goes berserk and grows back another arm and proceeds to dish out MAJOR damage in the most violent manner) much later than the following episodes. So it was weird 'cos I had to watch the later episodes, not knowing if that missing episode would ever make it's way to Singapore. Finally it did.

Yes, its seems people turn into unsensible idiots around the time of these events. I'm also reminded of the Escape From New York Special Edition DVD that was delayed for 2 years, becuase Snake lands his glider on the WTC. Rediculous.

I don't know about the production values, having only read the book, but on the level of controversy as far as the plot goes, the only thing I can think of in tone (not plot, but general un-PCness) and general distain for the system is Fight Club.
That movie did fairly well at the box office and continues to be popular on DVD.
Therefore, I think Battle Royale might have done surpisingly well, ifthe critisisms of Japanese society would be seen as relevant to American society.
In my opinion there has been a subtle crackdown in the U.S. by corporate sources of anything "controvertial". I would point to the distribution problems Fahrienhiet 911 (regardless of what you think of it's content) had and how the Dixie Chicks essentially got blacklisted by Clear Channel stations after they criticised the President Bush onstage, and the "choice" not to air Moveon.org's commercial during the Superbowl.
Anime has mostly managed to "hide under the radar screens" so to speak for the most part, which I am thankful. I suspect certain quarters could potenially make a stink over magic and religion in Anime. Politics, such as Last Exile's plot device of human instituted climate change coupled with irresponsible leadership directly causeing a war or GTO's tone of disrespect torward schools and teachers might garner critisim on the right and left respectively.
All the Best,
Nani?

With all this talk, nobody mentioned the Colorado Church that burned Pokemon Cards and hacked a Pikachu Doll with a sword, and how Saudi Arabia declared Pokemon "Illegal" to have in that country?

Cases like that Colorado Church are why I say for the most part. Luckily, there hasn't been any Harry Potter scale attacks on Anime.....yet.
As for Saudi Arabia, I think that country is an example of all I for one wish to avoid.
All the best,
Nani?

I believe in between episodes 15 and 16 of Gundam SEED, it was assumed that Kira and Flay had sex. I heard parents really made complaints about that one.
I also heard when Sailor Moon first aired in Japan, parents also compalined about the Sailor Senshi's death.
I know a year ago in Japan, a 23 year old guy said Evangelion told him to kill all mankind and even killed his own mother. I know that made news in some newspapers here.
All I've heard is the usual complaints in the U.S. is stuff like it contains graphic and violent content.
