God, it's fantastic that ANN has posted this. Found Moto Hagio's comparisons, particularly with the paper, of the different periods of manga to be very interesting. (Also really appreciated her recommendations!)
The more exposure Hagio gets, the better. |

Ah, Ms. Hagio. Such a talented lady. A real gem in the manga world. Not only is she a great comics creator, she's also a published novelist and science fiction writer, an illustrator, a pioneer in the yaoi genre, and was the character designer for the classic SNES Action-RPG, Illusion of Gaia.
And, of course, she was an actress in Death of Domomata. |

I love how it sounds like she has no hesitation about it, looks like she's ready to go to court over it! Nice interview and I really need to read some of her stuff. There were eleven sound really interesting but it looks like Viz has licensed it but hasn't put any volumes out, is that true or is the encyclopedia incomplete? EDIT: Never mind, the other interview specifically says that There were 11 was released by Viz, now off to find it or the movie. |

Interesting interview.
I'm ashamed to admit that I've only seen the They Were 11 movie and haven't read any of her actual manga works, but assuming that the adaptation was faithful to the core of her ideas...it was a wonderful piece of science fiction. Hopefully it's fair to conclude that. She seems like a talented manga creator in her own right and thus it's wonderful to see her getting a fraction of the spotlight she probably deserves. The fact that she isn't opposed to legal digital distribution of manga and comics is worth pointing out too. |

I thought "They Were 11" was anime only...
Viz did release her manga volume "A, A'" (A, A Prime), but that's been out of print of ages. Anybody know which CLAMP story sensei was talking about? The one where people live forever, so no children are born? I can't bring it to mind.

They Were 11 was a manga originally. Viz published it in the Four Shojo Stories collection back in the mid-90s but you'll have to be either very lucky or very wealthy to get hold of a copy now. It's a fantastic book if you can find it though. A, A' is much easier to get hold of for reasonable money and is also well worth searching for. |

I can't wait to get A Drunken Dream, I really love her work. I actually have a copy of A, A Prime that I got from a local comic book store's five dollar bin. So I believe it is worth to keep looking sometimes you can find a good deal.
