I'm rather surprised that the promotional DVD is such a big deal to readers. At least half the time, I never get around to watching it. Newtype USA is a great magazine, thick, full of gorgeous art, with a free manga. My fiancee and I read it cover-to-cover several times.

I'd be more willing to accept the argument that it's overpriced without the DVD than that it's not worth buying at all without the DVD. But then, since I often don't watch the DVD, I don't really think it's overpriced.

I personaly like the inclusion of the DVD. I am an avid reader of the magazine and always look forward to the DVD. It looks like I'll have to get a subscription now.

My two of my first three anime DVD's were Newtype Promos. The first one I ever got was a Geneon promo from Wizard. (Then I bought Nadesico.) It helps to have friends who are Newtype subscribers.

I only buy Newtype for the DVD, the CLAMP column, and all the pretty pictures. Take the dvd out and I don't consider all the pretty pictures and the CLAMP column worth 10 bucks.

i think they should still include it with the magazine on the newstands because some people can't afford all of the fee of a subscription and can afford it by buying it monthly but as for myself I'm gonna subscribe incase they start to take away other things and make the magazine not worth buying off the newstand.

I went on my monthly trip to my local comic book store and they had saved for me 2 issues of Newtype. The July issue came with the DVD but the August Issue didn't.

I had already mentioned, from the beginning, to the store owner that the only reason I wanted the mag was mostly because of the DVD. I figured $5 for the mag and $5 for the dvd...which balances out for me, at least.

But now that there is no more DVD in the retail edition. I won't pay $10 for just a mag. I bought the July mag but left the August issue behind. They did say that they will leave the mag on my list in case they decide to put back the dvd or include a CD of some type.

But I won't pay $90 to subscribe. WAAAAY to much for me. Even with a 30% discount, it's still hurts to fork over that much money for a magazine subscription. For example: when Animerica magazine was around the $60 subscription price, I never cared to subscribe so instead I pick it up at my local shop. But when it lowered to $30 a year, that's when I subscribed. So if ADV would at least lower the retail edition of Newtype to at least $5 an issue, then i would consider to get it agan. But still, I really did get the mag for the DVD in the first place.

I err...didn't even notice that the dvd was taken out..probably because I didn't pick up August's issue yet^^''. Wow, that does take part of the fun in buying Newtype doesn't it? I live in Canada and our subscription prices just LOOKS like so much! We can't even enter the contests! Sad So do you get the dvd if you subscribe?

Subscribing to the magazine is cheaper than buying it on newsstands. Sure, you have to pay that lump sum at once, but once you pay it, it's over with. You just sit at home and wait for the magazine to come to your house for a whole year!

And honestly, I don't blame Newtype for taking the disc out. Perhaps retail is to blame because stores lack people to monitor thieves. My work strips 3-5 copies out of the 15-20 copies we receive each month due to disc and poster theft. Heck, sometimes people get away with stealing the magazine in full.

I buy Newtype, but I certainly don't buy it for the disc. I actually >read< the magazine Anime smile

But if you really need that disc, just subscribe. If you don't have the money for it, get a job, or get a better job, or stop spending your money on other junk you don't really need. If you're too young to have a job (under 16), sell lemonade or mow lawns.

I was unaware of the removal of the DVD in the retail version of the magazine. That aside, when you subscribe, it costs 3 monthly payments of 30 dollars which may make it easier to subscribe to. I agree that 90 bucks seems like alot, it's worth it IMO and I don't really watch the dvd's. Luckily when I subscribed, they had a promotion at Sam Goody where if you subscribe you get 2 free issues, so 14 for the price of 9.

My husband picked up a few awhile back. Neither of us liked that several anime seemed to pop up constantly in each new issue. (No offence to Angelic Layer fans, but we got tired of reading about it in every issue we picked up.)

I really don't care if you can only get the CD if you subscribe. There wasn't much on the CD's we got.

What I would like to see is a reduced price for the mag-only version. (I've seen this done elsewhere, like CD Gamer.) That would make me more inclined to pick up the mag more often.

While I voted that I wouldn't be buying the magazine again the truth is I'll probably pick it up once in a while if I really wish to read a article (I still may pick up August if they ever get it in at the local Wal-Mart (it's only $8 there). However, that wasn't a option in the poll to pick out so I picked the one closes to what I'm going to actually be doing.

That said, the magazine probably isn't over priced at $10. Starlog, a SF Media magazine that's been around since the 1970's, has a similar glossy paper format and has always been extremely expensive (I don't think it's been under $7 a issue since the mid '80s). Still, I gave up buying it on a regular basis years ago because I just couldn't rationalize buying something that expensive when I have so little money to use to begin with.

An rationalization, and the loss of it, is what's going on with the New-Type USA situation and newstand buyers, IMO. When New-Type USA had the extra DVD in it, I could rationalize picking it up when I might not really need to read any articles in it. Now I don't have that rationalization I have no reason to pick up the magazine unless it has articles on something I'm interested in. An of course that's the problem with subscribing, at least in my case. I don't feel I want to shell out $90+ a year for a subscription to a magazine that I only read maybe two issues worth of material out of Confused. Those $10 I save when I don't buy the magazine can always be used to pick up new DVD's which IMO will get more use than the magazine will.

So that's my 2¢ on the subject Cool

If there was an equal amount of both, then I think people could overlook the dvd. But the art takes up most of the magazine. And with anime studios now posting websites for new shows-and occasionally free downloads-magazines that just rely on anime news and previews will quickly become relics. Newtype might've been a must-read 10 years ago, but the market's changed. While American newstands are probably not as oversaturated as their Japanese counterparts, they definitely are crowded enough that magazines need gimmicks to stay on the shelves.

$60?! I remember when it was $100! Although at least Newtype has the page count to justify its subscription fee.

But the price per issue with a subscription is $7.41. I don't watch the dvd half the time, but I do find Newtype a huge help in deciding what to buy to add to my collection. So they heavily cover certain titles(like Kiddy Grade)--one 2-page spread alone alerted me that I might like GetBackers & I was right--I LOVE GetBackers. I thought 12 Kingdoms was interesting--again, it was right. I got the special 0 issue at comic-con 2 yrs ago & subscribed. It's far more valuable than Animerica.

But I prefer to support my local retailer than to wait for the mailman.

It's a good magazine, yes, but it ain't worth $10 without the DVD. I can find anything thats in Newtype on the internet for free.
