Has anyone seen the movie "Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection" at the Fantasia Fest on July 18, 2010? I know I did, and I gotta' admit, the movie turned out as okay as I expected although it didn't feel like "Space Battleship Yamato" (Star Blazers) without Leiji Matsumoto's involvement, but I still recommend this movie to all die-hard Space Adventure movie fans. Also, I'm hoping for an official dvd release of this SBY film in North America soon.
Anyway, for those of you who've seen "Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection", what do you think about the film? What you like about it? What you dislike about it? Do you think it's a good idea for Yoshinobu Nishizaki (the creator of "Space Battleship Yamato") to do his next SBY film without needing Leiji Matsumoto's contributions? I'm all ears.

I'll admit I haven't seen the film yet, but I'll give you an answer to your last question about the Nish doing Yamato without Matsumoto.
I personally think Yamato was a great show because Matsumoto worked with the Nish's ideas to make it a great show. Without Matsumoto, there really can't be a good Yamato show, in my opinion. I mean Blue Noah wasn't very good, Odin... ugh. But what has Matsumoto done? Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, Interstella? Great works. But the Nish... meh.
That's what I think anyway.

Well, I for one won't be seeing it unless someone here in the states puts it on DVD. Japanese live action adaptations of anime are simply way too hard to track down or are often just not even available through other means. I suppose that's a good thing for the company who made it but not if you're a foreign fan trying to see it, like me trying to get my hands on Higurashi no Naku Koroni Chikai, the second live action Higurashi film, in a language I can understand.

I hesitate to watch the movie.
For one, Yamato is best over. I know they tried to end it unsuccessfully with Farewell Yamato, but by the end of Final Yamato, that was it, really. It had a great ending with no need for any more of it. Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori had completely matured into adults, and since they were the main characters, there's no reason to go any further. There was a perfect coda to the franchise in that movie. To continue it from that point seems absolutely ludicrous and sort of spits in the face of that ending.
Second, without Leiji Matsumoto, what has Nishizaki accomplished? Nothing but being arrested for weapons and drug charges. He's a failure. Matsumoto is a brilliant and prolific artist with grand romantic ideals.

They're talking about the cg animated film from last year, not the live-action movie which comes out this December.

Ah, okay, didn't think there'd be more than one resurrection project of ye ol' anime relic.
