This is my first post to the ANN forums, even though I have been coming to this site for years. (So if I effed it up, don't be a dick.)

I was listening to the ANN podcast from Anime Expo, and just heard the part where the guy asked about the possibility of Ribbon Knight being licensed in the U.S.

In fact, Viz licensed this manga and issued a preview of it in Shojo Beat (I think only a few months before the Shojo Beat magazine shut down).

Does anyone know if Viz got the license just to issue that one-shot preview of the series, or are there plans to release it in volumes?

Also, if the guy who asked the Ribbon Knight question is on these forums, let me know where your petition is! I cosplayed as Ribbon Knight for Halloween this year, and I would love to sign your petition.

I don't know, but Viz seems quite fond of the omnibus idea right now. They're releasing some older, less popular series immediatly as VizBig editions. Cross Game is a good example. Maybe they'll publish Ribbon Knight omnibuses as well?

Ribbon no Kishi (Ribbon Knight) = Princess Knight, a very famous work by Osamu Tezuka. Basically, it begins when an angel accidentally caused a princess to be born with the heart of a boy instead of a girl. There's gender issues, politics, demons, and a handsome prince for her to fall in love with. The manga is much darker than the anime - a lot of characters die in the manga who don't in the anime version.

Somebody who knows an insider at Viz should really ask that question. Licensing Japanese manga is complicated, and as fans, all we can do is request that our favorite titles be made legally available.

I was bugging Ed @ Vertical to re-release Tezuka's Adolf as an omnibus until he finally twittered that Viz still has the license. Color me surprised! Viz released the series years ago in flipped editions under a defunct imprint, and all the volumes are out-of-print (the first one is especially rare; it's the only one I can't find!). Viz let Black Jack's license lapse, thus Vertical subsequent release of that title (which I'm currently collecting; it's a joy! Smile) I assumed it was the same deal w/Adolf.

So if Viz is greedily holding on to the Princess Knight without releasing it I'll be pretty pissed at them!

Somehow makes me remember of Rose of Versailles. Was Ryoko Ikeda influenced by Princess Knight?

That's certainly within the realm of possibility, given Ribon no Kishi was one of the earlier shoujo mangas.

I wish they'd release it- there needs to be more Tezuka on the shelves ;-;
