First of all I do not have it in my area yet. Secondly I have concerns about it.

1) Part of my love of Anime is the frank "anthropolgy" of shows such as Blue Gender, frank spiritual questioning of shows such as Haibane Renmei and the general subversiveness of shows such as GTO or manga like Angel Sancutary. These shows question but at the same time encourage good values and it is one of my favorite parts of Anime.
I am thankful that this part has mostly flown under the radar of the would be censors in our society, not completely mind you, but mostly. True, there has been some editing but it has been done to make things more "commercial" i.e. Cardcaptors, then because a group of "concerned parents" are worried about what thier precious little one learning "magic" from Cardcaptor Sakura and that darn Harry Potter.
The thing is, we can always buy the original Dvd's, watch it on our own, borrow it etc.
If Anime Channel by becomeing too successful alerts those "concerned parents" to what I'm watching I am afraid of censorship of said DVD's after laws get passed in enough towns to "protect our children" that it is affects the economics of Anime. If they can't sell in Texas, for example, how will it effect what we get in Colorado or Ohio.
Let's face it, most of America thinks of "cartoons" as children's fair and might not see us as worth protecting.

2)My second fear is that there will that they put the worst garbage on so that it hurts the general respect that Anime is starting to garner. This in turn effect the botttom line and fewer shows come out, especially good shows.

All the best,

Nani?

1. If every single parent in America isn't outraged by the things on TV and movies (non-anime) today already, then there's no way that it would affect anime in the way that you've suggested.

2. Anime is still made in Japan, and usually only the better stuff makes it over here. And besides, if they put nothing but crap on, then no one will watch. If no one watches, then advertisers will take their money elsewhere and the whole thing will fail.

I understand your point, Nani?, but I think you may be needlessly concerned. I got a magazine-size mailer a couple of months ago about the Anime Network detailing the kind of stuff they're going to be airing. Here's a sampling:

Azumanga Daiogh
Chobits
Kaleido Star
Princess Nine
Gasaraki
MS Nadesico
Voices of a Distant Star
NG Evangelion
Full Metal Panic!
RahXephon
Crying Freeman
Steel Angel Kurumi
Those Who Hunt Elves
Slayers (various)
Gunsmith Cats
BGC 2040
Rune Soldier
Kino's Journey
Noir
Saiyuki
City Hunter

Granted, I just pulled out the highlights, but this is a good cross-section of some of the best anime out there in the American market.

It's always seemed to me that the people behind ADV (who are principally behind Anime Network) have their heads on right. They aren't going to endanger the chances of this new channel by broadcasting anything less than the best and most popular stuff.

As for negative reactions from the general community? Again, I wouldn't worry about that, as long as the more prurient groups don't discover hentai. Confused I can't imagine a backlash on anime for anything else.

Nah, I think, even if the channel does turn out to be profitable enough not to fold and does license enough anime so that fans don't think of it as the "rerun" channel, it's going to be far more niche a channel than Cartoon Network (which I think is still the best venue for promoting anime outside the fandom niche).

You shouldn't worry about it being a "rerun" channel. Game Show Network, TV Land, TBS, TNT and a whole bunch of other cable channels basically show nothing but "old" shows, and they're doing quite well.

Personally I am very excited about getting an anime network. It's something that I have more or less dreamed about for years, and now it has finally happened.

As for the whole parents thing...parents already know about anime and hentai. I don't know if any of you remember but back in late May Suncoast announced that they would be removing the Berserk manga, and some miscl. hentai titles from their shelves. This was at the complaint of a mother who accidently bought her son the Berserk manga.

Although this is kind of a negative thing to happen to anime fans, I don't think it really should have any effect on the anime network. Not many places have it yet, but even when loads of places do get it, it's more or less a cable channel. They can choose to either watch it or not watch it. I don't think we have anything to worry about here.

Well, since it would automatically have broadcast rights to all of ADV's material, past and future, I doubt it will be a "rerun" channel. ADV has already said that in the future they will begin airing new shows on AN before the DVD release. They already hold the broadcast rights to Chobits (Geneon), and several Rightstuf titles.(maybe more, but I can't remember) Invariable it will be a niche channel, since it will only show anime (unlike CN), but that doesn't doom it to failure or low ratings. Anime is still a niche market, but it's pretty big and getting bigger everyday. If they can show series uncut (which they have been doing on VOD) people will probably tune in more since many of us would rather see uncut than cut shows.

I think most parents still equate anime in general with hentai. Certainly mine do. Whenever I visit I bring some anime to watch while I'm there. My mother, in particular, always sits down to watch (acting interested, she watches the golf channel with my dad, but only because he wants her to) and when the fanservice starts, she asks why I watch that "cartoon porn". As for the mom buying the Berserk manga, that's what happens when you don't research what you're buying and instead just go grab something on impulse, or because your kid is right there asking you to get it.

The amount of anime ADV has is a lot by anime licensor standards, but, in terms of total "hours", it's still a pittance compared to TV Land or the Game Show Network (some of those old game shows have been on television so long that, if you had a marathon of every Price is Right episode ever produced, back-to-back, 24/7, it would go for months and months). A good portion of the shows ADV has don't go past 26 episodes, which is just 13 hours. Yes, ADV will keep on licensing more shows, but only at a rate the market can bear. And I don't think the domestic market for anime is going to get all that much bigger since I think most of the people who would be into anime if they were properly exposed to it have been exposed to it by now in one form or another.

Not necessarily, I saw a couple of anime episodes when I was quite a bit younger. At the time, I paid no attention to them, to the point of even turning to a different channel. I came across some more when I had gotten a bit older, and at that point I liked it. There are people now that have seen some, but like me, don't like it right now but will later. There are also those who are at the age that they are transitioning out of normal cartoons, or perhaps have already done so, but not really discovered anime yet. Then there are those who have no friends that watch anime, and since they haven't seen any wouldn't go out to buy the dvd. (and yes, people exist who don't know enough about computers to get fansubs Wink ) The only way they would come across it is on TV. For whatever reason they may not watch CN, and may not be up for AS, but it would be easier to come across a 24/7 anime channel like AN that they just might stop to watch.

As for the game show network, I don't watch it, but they probably show reruns at one point or another. It's just a fact of life. CN... well AS in particular, is the mother of all rerun channels. With ADVs $$$ backing, AN can secure broadcast rights from other companies if they so choose. Certainly some of the smaller companies would probably love to get some cash and at the same time have their series run on the network to hopefully boost DVD sales.

Game Show Network has cut back alot of it's "reruns" in favor of Reality Based Game shows (According to the complaints I hear and read on the net). The only reruns they do religiously is it's "Late Night Black and White" time slot showcasing several old game shows.

Which are reruns, for the most part. Even the Soap Network has some original programming, so it really isn't a big deal.

Actually ADV has said that they'll be editing some things for the linear channel. =/
