I definitely enjoyed the second half of Drrr much less than the first. There's almost no Celty or Shinra screentime and the plots they do have drag on for far too long. And the ending feels like it's in a down and slow moment in the novels. I hope there's a continuation because these episodes felt more like a middle part of a story than an entire second half.

THANK YOU! Someone else who realizes how evil and annoying Izaya is!
Sometimes I feel like the only person who doesn't ship him with Shizuo.

Agreed that the first half is better than the second, though the second is still good. In a way, they are two separate stories, with the first reaching its climax in episodes 11-12, and a new one altogether starting in episode 13. I assume that has something to do with completing a book or two?
Anyway, this has been successful enough in Japan (the DVDs consistently top the charts) that I'm hoping for a second season in the future where some of the character that got sidelined in story #2 will get to to make a return.

I take it you hang out with the fangirl crowd? Because when I brought it up on the forums here at ANN, there was a general agreement that if we wanted Shizuo with anyone, it would be Celty, although we didn't necessarily want to break up the canon partnership she has with Shinra. So yeah, lots and lots of people do not 'ship him with Orihara. Lots and lots of us are SANE.

This is the first series ever for me where I really want to complain about the screen time of some of the characters. The first half of the series was perfect, the screen time among the large cast of characters were almost equal. You don't feel like one character is taking too much of the series. That why I was so disappointed with the second half mainly focusing on only three characters. It not because I don't like them causes I do but for a series like this I expect to see a bit more. It makes me think why did they even bother to add the new characters in the second opening when they are almost never there in the show.
I guess that why I like Baccano more because it focuse on more things and the storyline go faster. Still I will buy the dvds of durarara when it comes out, I love the first half. I hope this series get a second season.

Since I went in to this series with expectations of it being another Baccano!, I was of course disappointed to see the second half turn into The Outsiders though, even The Outsiders featured the death of a character.
To, DRRR!! was all style over substance. There wasn't much of anything that happened in this second half. When the final episode ends in just the three leads talking out what's going on, something is wrong. It means that there wasn't anything ever really important happening.
Also, I totally agree that Anri, Mikado, and Kida are by far the dullest characters, and I don't feel sympathy at all for any of them. For instance with Mikado just abandoning his role of leader of the Dollars while many members are being attacked by the Yellow Scarves.
I thought the first half was okay, but the second really failed in my eyes. It is very popular though, so I'm sure there are a ton of people who loved it.

And a certain someone gets to be thrown under the hooves of a herd of rampaging water buffalo.

Last I recall, Simon punches the shit out of Izaya straight into a billboard. Doesn't that count?
Besides...really. Izaya's a troll, sure - /b/ incarnate. But because he's the best troll there is, I just find it too hard to hate him.

Yeah, like Shizou's bro never even appeared in the 2nd half.

For the most part, I do agree with Carl. The first half of the series was better paced, but I think I'm one of the few who really love Mikado, Kida, and Anri so I didn't really mind the shift in focus. Durarara!! has been my favorite series of the year, I felt it was executed almost flawlessly. Hopefully we'll get a second season, there's still a lot of material from the novels they can cover.
And do some people seriously hate Izaya? He may be an uncaring, calculating douchenozzle but he's just so damn smug and charming I can't help but love him.

I am glad I am not the only one that thought the 2nd half did not live up to the potential created in the 1st half.
I would say on the positive side the series had a very interesting setting (the city was almost a character in itself) and some fun characters but the plot and what was done with those great characters ended up sort of lackluster in my opinion.
The worst part for me though was the entire drama of the 2nd half was based around characters just not talking to each other and one of the most annoying 1-dimensional villains I have seen in awhile (I am talking about Horoda here).

Good review. Sure, the pace slowed down significantly, but it's still an enjoyable, entertaining show.
As an Izaya fan, I too wanted him to get his comeuppance. To be fair, Simon's punch was good (and by good, a mean awesome), but I wanted something along the lines of being thrown under rampaging herd of water buffalo.
Here's hoping for a second season!

But wasn't the punch by Simon in the finale even a little bit satisfying? I have to say this review describes my feelings towards Durarara almost to a tee. I really liked it at first, but for me by the end it was more of a 'meh' response. If there was a sequel however, I would still watch it, but I'm not clamoring over wanting one as I maybe would have at the beginning.

I too am really curious about why they added a number of those characters in the opening when they had next to nothing to do like the cop, the doctor's father, and Tom.
I know that this series is based on a string of light novels, apparently there are 9 in total (so far?). I wonder how many of them are covered in the 24 episodes of the anime, and how many are left for more seasons?

Of course, if they make a follow up season and it rocks, then the second half of season one will end up being another example of middle-of-trilogy-itis.

AND Izaya got lectured in Russian, that's gotta count for something, right?
I agree that the first part of the series was the better part but I just loved the trio to death and how in the world are you supposed to start a conversation about how you're all the leaders of rival gangs that don't take orders very well, well that's only two of them but yeah.
And I'm also hoping for additional seasons, there are certainly enough novels to adapt!
