Gatchaman in its Battle of the Planets form is the earliest anime that I saw. However, at the time, I wasn't aware that the show was anime.

It wasn't until I saw Macross: Do You Remember Love? at a sci-fi convention that I actually became aware of anime's existence and became an anime fan.

Dragonball Z. I got hooked on it during a marathon of some episodes from the Namek saga my brother was watching on Cartoon Network. He left about halfway through and I ended up watching the whole dang thing. Laughing

It got me to watch the show, and then I decided to the watch the other shows Toonami got like Gundam Wing, Tenchi and such. I've since mostly moved away from Dragonball Z onto better stuff, but I still kinda like it. Now, 13 years later I'm still a fan and have seen over 700 different titles.

Well I was fairly late to anime so the anime that really got me into the medium are fairly recent. Fullmetal Alchemist, Eureka Seven, and the earlier Bleach episodes are responsible for getting me into anime. Mostly because they came on ytv`s bionix and I became obsessed with watching them.

The Venus Wars

I've told this story before, but basically I caught it one Saturday Morning long ago on the Sci-Fi channel. And it kinda burned into my young teen mind. After I graduated high school and got a job in 2001, one of the first things I started looking to buy were the new fangled Anime DVDs that were all over the place. My enjoyment of Venus War's sci-fi action dram directly lead me to such films as Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Royal Space Force, and Macross Plus. And thus my Anime fandom was born.

So yeah, The Venus Wars made me LIKE anime.

Starblazers I remember running home from the school bus to try and make it in time for the theme song on that alone still stirs me in the depths of my soul.

Plus Eddie Allen as Leader Desslock - When you need an evil space Nazi who sounds like Boris Karloff accept no substitutes!

Of course I was also praying the weather would be clear so WPIX 11 would come in - Thank God for cable and DVD

Hmm, I honestly have to say I've had multiple sources that got me interested and kept me interested in anime until my interest became self sustaining. The earliest animes I remember were Ninja Scroll, Dagger of Kamui, and I believe that Lensman edit. Ninjas and lasers baby but probably not series or movies a kid my age should have saw but I only remembered the action at the time so it was all good. Afterwards I have to say Voltron really kept close to anime along with random video rentals of Spacekeeters, Grendizer, and Gaikin. Oh and 8-Man and the 1st live action Guyver movie. Although back then I didn't realize anime was anime.

The first series i watched when I realized anime was anime and had its own distinctions from the general US cartoons (and the series that really got me into anime) were Dragonball Z and Cardcaptor. DBZ because you never saw action like that during that time in the US and Cardcaptor because it was the first series where I noticed all the hard edits and paid attention to things like flow and pacing. I was curious why some scenes seemed cut out or cut up so I eventually decided that my first DVD purchase would be the original japanese disc (although they were the chinese bootlegs at the time) and was surprised at all the changes. That discovery (and the fact I liked it) really got me into anime since I was pretty much like "What else have I been missing?! Gasp! Has Dragonball Z been edited?! I must find the original Japanese!" and now I'm here. Not as big into the magical girl series as I use to me but my taste in shows is still as wide.

Predictably (or not?), it was Cowboy Bebop when they were showing it in the late nineties on CNX here in the UK. It aired back to back with Outlaw Star, which I liked a lot less. My Friday nights consisted of Samurai Jack, then Outlaw Star, then Bebop. I just remember thinking it was the coolest thing I'd seen in a long, long time. The soundtrack inspired me to buy a harmonica, it had that profound an effect on me.

The very same harmonica still gathers dust in the back of a drawer somewhere Embarassed

Well, the earliest anime I watched if I'm not mistaken was Pokemon. I wouldn't really say it got me to 'like anime' because at that point I didn't even know what anime was. That led me to start watching Dragonball Z which was on afterward which I believe led me into Gundam Wing. That sparked me (a few years later) to start watching Gundam SEED on TV. Between that and a friend who was into anime I started watching the rest of YTV's Bionix block at which point I learned what anime was.

Literally an hour ago I finished watching the last episode of the anime Clannad. It is the first anime I have ever watched and it has definitely encouraged me to continue explore the world of anime.

I've recently discussed anime with some of my friends and the general impression I got was that they consider anime to be simple and childish - We're all highly educated and usually discuss elaborate scientific as well as fictional literature and movies but I must say that this time around they couldn't be more wrong. Thumbs up to the person who suggested watching Clannad to me and double-thumbs up to the actual anime for making me cry!

Probably going to be a common answer but Cowboy Bebop got me hooked on anime. I had seen other shows befor but still thought of them as just cartoons, like bugs bunny is a cartoon, but made in japan. Cowboy Bebop was so diffrent, and deep, like a live action tv show, i was blown away. It realy is the show that can demonstrait the difference between cartoons and anime.

Sort of a hat trick, in that I was curious what the hell was with the cartoon school girl engaging in combat with mechasuits, aka Project A-ko, and wondered if that strange two parter at the local library about a crazy tank police, aka Dominion, force in a poisoned sci-fi setting had anything to it. And the clincher was seeing this series about chicks in battle suits taking out berserk cyborg/android. So you might say Bubblegum Crisis fully cemented me into the fandom. Sci-fi has always been my weakness, be it domestic or imported.

For me, actually it was Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventures that was the push for me being the crazed anime fan I am today.

It would always play on the Anime Unleased block on TechTV.

This block first appeared around the time Adult Swim had just got it's start and it would come on around the same time too, they showed other anime's series like Silent Mobius and Crest of the Stars (there were some others but I can't remember).

Well there's 4 actually and they got me into anime for different reasons. I had been into anime before hand but didn't know it. Watching shows like Starblazers, Voltron, etc. The first group I watched and knew they were anime was on Cartoon Network. I think it was called their Anime Invasion when they first started the network. It was late at night on a Friday or Saturday at like 10pm-2am. They played Vampire Hunter D, Project A-Ko, and Akira. I'm sure they were edited but I don't remember. What I remember is thinking how different these cartoons were. How they were more mature, serious, and had real stories and weren't just fluff like most western cartoons back then. They really got me interested into finding out more about this anime thing and fortunately a friend at the time was big into anime and he brought me into the fold.

Once I was brought into the fold and was curious about getting more into anime the title that sealed it for me was Oh My Goddess. The original OVA's. The manga was what really piqued my interest and got me into manga/anime and then I found out there was an anime based on the manga so I had to check it out. I loved it and the anime/manga really are what pushed me further into the fandom and made it a real hobby and not just a casual thing I would watch.
