Gah, perhaps next round I'll get to vote than, I just got here to try and do this, the holiday made me late. I am bummed about missing it. |

If you decide to vote next round, be sure to include a supporting reason for at least one of the matches. It would be shame if you tried to vote and your votes did not count again. |

Round 2 Group B is now closed.
Due to RHachicho never posting a vote for B-23, and thus having all of his votes canceled, we ended up with only 20 legal sets of votes. That results in our first two ties of the tournament, in the two matches that were the closest all round: B-17: Balalaika gives Nov. 11 a dirt nap 19-1. B-18: Franz d'Epinay pulls away from Yoruichi late 14-6. B-19: Kurz Weber snipes Dr. Reichwein 16-4. B-20: Shikamaru uses his Shadow Possession Jutsu on Dr. Reichwein 16-4. B-21: Winry Rockbell overwhelms Ichiro Mihara 17-3. B-22: Cornelia li Britannia and Hosaka tie 10-10, both advancing. B-23: Leopold Scorpse and Reika Mishima tie 10-10, both advancing. B-24: Vice-Admiral Spoor outmaneuvers Misaki Kirihara 13-7. Fortunately the two ties aren't paired against each other, but that's going to make for an especially hairy B-28 three-way next round. (If anything, the tie probably helped Winry's cause in the upcoming B-27.) Lesson learned here? Even if you're hesitant about how to vote in a match-up until you have further information, at least put down a tentative vote. I'm not particularly worried about the lowest-yet vote total this time since this was a holiday weekend. Hopefully our late/missing people will be back on board next time. Anyway, next round may be a little while yet, as I was out until past midnight local time and so still need to get it set up. |

Round 2 Group C is now closed.
Results can be found here. This group saw some very tight matches last round and one improbable late overtake. Will this round be as eventful? And again, please do not wait until the last minute to complete or submit votes! I hate seeing people miss an opportunity to vote because they piddle around and miss the deadline. Also, the Maestro's Guide entry will be getting updated, but it might not be up right away. (And no, mow123, I'm not going to let you get away with listing a dozen different Primary Roles or else I'd have to go back and revise many other Guide entries accordingly.) Group C-17 Kisuke Urahara, Bleach vs. Akemi, SaiKano Group C-18 Joun the Beekeeper, The Beast Player Erin vs. Fool, Kaleido Star Group C-19 Straight Cougar, sCRYed vs. Doug, Kurau Phantom Memory Group C-20 Myoga, Inuyasha vs. Tomoyo Daidouji, Cardcaptor Sakura Group C-21 Sakae Jinnouchi, Summer Wars vs. Maestro Stresemann, Nodame Cantible Group C-22 Hiko Seijiro, Ruroni Kenshin vs. Rakushun, The Twelve Kingdoms Group C-23 Gilliam II, Outlaw Star vs. Mao, Darker Than Black franchise Group C-24 Kamaji, Spirited Away vs. Wakaba Tsukishima, Cross Game Last edited by Key on Mon Jun 07, 2010 11:30 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Fine, I have picked a few of the most important roles and sent you a new PM. Thanks for letting me do this, Key. You can blame Dorcas_Aurelia for goading me into listing a dozen roles for him last round. But don't worry about it since I actually enjoyed making it.

Why is it Group B is the one bracket that keeps blowing up for my mini-games for each tourney I've participated in.
Match C-17: Kisuke Urahara (Bleach) Akemi's spoiler[death] and meddling in Chise and Shuji's relationship doesn't hold a candle to Kisuke's involvements as Ichigo wouldn't have had the means to travel or strengthen himself in rescuing Rukia in the Soul Society arc without Kisuke's training and guidance. Match C-18: Joun the Beekeeper (Beast Player Erin) Match C-19: Doug (Kurau: Phantom Memory) Match C-20: Tomoyo Daidouji (Card Captor Sakura) Tomoyo has a lot more depth and presence in being supportive best friend to Sakura than Myoga's frequent appearances for advise and bloodsucking. Match C-21: Maestro Stresemann (Nodame Cantabile franchise) Match C-22: Rakashun (Twelve Kingdoms) Match C-23: Mao (Darker than Black franchise) I find it bewildering enough Gilliam managed to advance against Irie even though the A.I. fulfills a similar role as Ryo-ohki (voted off in the character nominations for similar reasons) being nothing more than a mascot and computer system for the main cast of Outlaw Star. Match C-24: Wakaba Tsukishima (Cross Game) While only present at the first episode, Wakaba has quite the impact on the major characters of Cross Game who are motivated by her final wish to make it to Koshien. Kamaji lacks that sort of impact as he lacks enough depth on his character to make a lasting impression with his presence compared to Wakaba's. |

I haven't piddled since I was potty trained! But I have been known to procrastinate!
***** Group C-17 Kisuke Urahara, Bleach Sticking with Kisuke because without what he did behind the scenes, Bleach really wouldn’t be as good as it is. Group C-18 Fool, Kaleido Star Group C-19 Straight Cougar, sCRYed Group C-20 Tomoyo Daidouji, Cardcaptor Sakura As good as Myoga is, he’s squashed by the fashionista powerhouse that is Tomoyo. Group C-21 Sakae Jinnouchi, Summer Wars Group C-22 Rakushun, The Twelve Kingdoms Group C-23 Gilliam II, Outlaw Star Group C-24 Kamaji, Spirited Away |

Group C-17
Kisuke Urahara, Bleach vs. Akemi, SaiKano I fully expect Kisuke to win this one by a landslide, and he probably should win, given the depth of his direct or indirect involvement in what all happens in the series (especially in the early stages). Akemi is too strong a supporting character not to get at least some votes, though, so this is mostly a vote to prevent her from being totally wiped out. Besides, it's not like she doesn't have her merits; she is her series' critical supportive friend character, brings the two leads together as a couple despite how doing so conflicts with her own romantic interests, and represents the series' most tragic figure in a variety of different ways. (There's no scene which Kisuke has in Bleach which even comes close to matching the emotional power of spoiler[Akemi's ugly death scene], after all.) Group C-18 Joun the Beekeeper, The Beast Player Erin vs. Fool, Kaleido Star Not familiar with either. Arguments last round were stronger for Joun, and he certainly beat stronger competition, so he gets my vote barring compelling arguments. Group C-19 Straight Cougar, sCRYed vs. Doug, Kurau Phantom Memory This is the toughest match-up of the Group for me, as I know and like both characters and both have about equally strong presences. Straight Cougar has the edge in memorable personality, but Doug probably has a bit greater direct impact on the heroines and storyline as a supporting role. Really, you can't go wrong either way here, but since I have to pick one I'll go with Straight Cougar by a nose. I won't be disappointed either way, though. Group C-20 Myoga, Inuyasha vs. Tomoyo Daidouji, Cardcaptor Sakura Based on last round's voting I fully expect Tomoyo to run away with this one, too, but I have to give at least some love to my main flea Myoga. He serves an important info-dumping function and certainly adds some further color to the series, after all. Group C-21 Sakae Jinnouchi, Summer Wars vs. Maestro Stresemann, Nodame Cantible Not familiar with either and strong arguments were made in support of both last round. On a coin flip I will go with Sakae but this one is subject to change depending on convincing arguments. Group C-22 Hiko Seijiro, Ruroni Kenshin vs. Rakushun, The Twelve Kingdoms Easiest vote of the round for me. Hiko sounds like he has some good merits but Rakashun is far too much of a critical player in his series to be denied this early. Without him, two of the series' heroines would not be where they are or as good a people as they are. Rarely in anime does a single supporting character get to reshape the life of leading characters more than once, and he's such a likable character to boot. Group C-23 Gilliam II, Outlaw Star vs. Mao, Darker Than Black franchise Time for those who supported Gilliam II last round to explain why the heck he should have even made it to this round, much less what he has that could even give the heavily-involved Mao a run for his money. This one should not be close. Group C-24 Kamaji, Spirited Away vs. Wakaba Tsukishima, Cross Game Kamaji is a highly likable character from one of anime's best-known titles, but he isn't, by a longshot, the better choice here, and anyone who's seen both titles will probably agree. Wakaba beats him both by being one of the most special and inherently likable characters in a special series but also by having a far more pervasive influence on the events of her series than Kamaji does in his movie. Her will and lingering presence shapes Cross Game to a degree that Kamaji cannot even come close to challenging. |

A point that applies to Hiko as well. Not only does he save Kenshin, raise him, and train him, but much later in Kenshin's life he again has the opportunity to help him develop his skills and make a major realization that allows Kenshin to spoiler[ultimately be victorious over Shishio and save the fledgling Meiji government]. Key, I can't believe you have yet to see Rurouni Kenshin. This is an oversight you really have to take care of one of these days! Oh, and I don't expect you to change your vote, but I hope that others will give Hiko a bit of consideration. In a series with a LOT of supporting characters, I think he is the best of them all. It makes me sad that he is up against what seems to be such a strong opponent so early on. |

Wow, if B-22 and B-23 hadn't ended in ties, the mini-game could have been disastrous (although if RHachicho had finished voting, tipping the scales in Cornelia's favor, only 3 people would have lost out on Hosaka).
So, yeah, the results were pretty crazy. Balalaika and Winry both performed according to mini-game expectations, and the Leo vs Reika and Roy vs Shikamaru matches were expected to be pretty close, but the other four: all over the flipping place! Franz vs Yoruichi was expected to be a fairly even split, not the rather lopsided victory it was for Franz (although I'm pleased he won). Dr. Reichwein vs Kurz Weber was expected to go the completely opposite direction, as was Misaki vs Spoor. Meanwhile, Cornelia had been expected to mop the floor with Hosaka (and again, I'm rather happy this didn't happen). For actual mini-game scores, I'm the only person who got 16 points, which puts my (completely irrelevant) total at 78, 4 points ahead of the actual leader: Olliff. Key has slipped back into second 1 point down again. JesuOtaku has pulled up, position wise, into third only 4 points behind Olliff. Mow is another 3 points behind JO, and Ggultra 1 more point behind Mow. After that the field spreads out a little. Because in general everyone did somewhat below average, there wasn't a whole lot of change up in order, although Marie-antoinette did pull up four places thanks to a 12-point round (Olliff had the high this round with 14, and Key, JO, and dtm also had double-digit scores). Detailed results. |

Group C-17
Kisuke Urahara, Bleach vs. Akemi, SaiKano Ah here we go, a tough one right off the bat. Oi vey. Still impossible to vote against Urahara at this point, though Key's post made it really tempting to go in Akemi's direction. Essentially, Urahara's status is cemented due to the length of Bleach. Sure, he would have been nominated if Bleach was just the first three seasons (aka, up through the Soul Society arc), but his staying power is in his constant major role in each of the Bleach arcs. Few characters in a 12 episode series can hold a candle to that, regardless. Group C-18 Joun the Beekeeper, The Beast Player Erin vs. Fool, Kaleido Star I haven't seen Beast Player Erin, whereas I nominated Fool to start with. To a certain extent it looks like they are quite different supporting characters... at least based on Joun's guide entry. Though each (seem) to provide specific guidance to the lead. My fondness for Fool, though, is in the ridiculously hilarious things he does between his sage advice. Group C-19 Straight Cougar, sCRYed vs. Doug, Kurau Phantom Memory Every time I see "Doug" listed in this tournament I think of the Nickelodeon franchise. It is not particularly endearing. Regardless, for two shows I have not seen, the guide entry for Doug is more compelling. Group C-20 Myoga, Inuyasha vs. Tomoyo Daidouji, Cardcaptor Sakura Myoga... easy vote for me, actually. The flea is just too neat. Group C-21 Sakae Jinnouchi, Summer Wars vs. Maestro Stresemann, Nodame Cantible I am actually in the middle of watching Nodame Cantible as we speak. It has been a slow process because I just don't have the anime marathon desire right now, with Star Trek taking up most of my free time. Still, I've seen the first 11 episodes and I can say that Stresemann is a grade-A support character. Sakae jinnouchi sounds like an interesting character, but having not seen Summer Wars yet, makes it impossible to vote against a character with the importance (and craziness) of Milch. Group C-22 Hiko Seijiro, Ruroni Kenshin vs. Rakushun, The Twelve Kingdoms (Mental note to self: buy The Twelve Kingdoms asap) Rakushun, partly based on the respective guide entries.... and partly out of bitterness that Hiko won the first time around. Group C-23 Gilliam II, Outlaw Star vs. Mao, Darker Than Black franchise Gilliam II is an intriguing personality for this tournament, however, Mao just as more interesting aspects. Group C-24 Kamaji, Spirited Away vs. Wakaba Tsukishima, Cross Game[/quote] Oh geez, helluva spoiler in Wakaba Tsukishima's entry. Just a first episode spoiler... but still. I was all gung-ho about voting for her, but that just put a bad taste in my mouth and now I gotta vote Kamaji. Oddly, I've not seen Cross Game and I have seen Spirited Away, so it isn't like I find Kamaji unworthy. Kamaji's role serves as a specific guide to the lead. Even though Kamaji only gets a few scattered scenes, his kindness really shines through and the efforts he makes are crucial. |

Group C-17
Voting for: Kisuke Urahara, Bleach Reasons: I love Akemi but I'm not sure she is third round material. And Urahara still has a very compelling guide that makes me think that he is. Group C-18 Voting for: Fool, Kaleido Star Group C-19 Voting for: Doug, Kurau Phantom Memory Group C-20 Voting for: Tomoyo Daidouji, Cardcaptor Sakura Reasons: You just can't argue against the girl creating the costumes. Group C-21 Voting for: Maestro Stresemann, Nodame Cantible Reasons: Love the new guide entry for him! Stresemann is definitely one of my top contenders in the tournament and he should go very far indeed. Just on a comic level, he is pure gold, but he also has his serious moments and those are even better. Group C-22 Voting for: Rakushun, The Twelve Kingdoms Reasons: Oh no, Rakushun and Stresemen will be against each other next round, provided they both make it through this one. That's going to be a heartbreaking vote because both of them are just so strong. Raukshun is one of the most original and always interesting characters in The Twelve Kingdoms (and he does have good competition). The series definitely wouldn't be the same at all without him. Group C-23 Voting for: Mao, Darker Than Black franchise Group C-24 Voting for: Wakaba Tsukishima, Cross Game |

Group C-17
Kisuke Urahara, Bleach vs. Akemi, SaiKano While I can appreciate viewers feelings for Akemi, I simply think Kisuke is a better choice here for best supporting character. So much of the information needed to move forward is from him at critical times, and while his emotional impact is very different than Akemi’s, I don’t think that factors into this really. Certainly, both characters are needed in their respective shows, but I believe Kisuke’s role is more deserving of the win here. Group C-18 Joun the Beekeeper, The Beast Player Erin vs. Fool, Kaleido Star Joun’s description was compelling, however I am still picking the familiar here in Fool. Group C-19 Straight Cougar, sCRYed vs. Doug, Kurau Phantom Memory I can see how this one would be close, they feel similar in their worthiness to be here, so I am going with the one I prefer which is Doug. Group C-20 Myoga, Inuyasha vs. Tomoyo Daidouji, Cardcaptor Sakura This seems like a funny match-up at first until I started thinking about it more, and these are both pretty good choices. This is another that ultimately comes down to preference, so Tomoyo for the win! Group C-21 Sakae Jinnouchi, Summer Wars vs. Maestro Stresemann, Nodame Cantible I am unfamiliar with both of these shows and characters, and both descriptions sound really good, so it’s pretty much a toss up, so Maestro since it’s a bit more fun to say... Group C-22 Hiko Seijiro, Ruroni Kenshin vs. Rakushun, The Twelve Kingdoms This is a fairly easy choice here, Rakushun is much more involved in the story over a longer time, and pivotal in how things go in this story while never stepping into the lime-light himself. Certainly deserving. Group C-23 Gilliam II, Outlaw Star vs. Mao, Darker Than Black franchise Another easy choice here in Mao. I have seen both shows and I couldn’t even remember who (what) Gilliam was without checking the guide. Clearly didn’t leave a strong impression. Group C-24 Kamaji, Spirited Away vs. Wakaba Tsukishima, Cross Game I am completely unfamiliar with Cross Game, but am inclined to vote Wakaba anyway, thanks to some of Key’s statements and the description. If I ever get around to seeing this, I hope I don’t regret it, as I hold a special love for Kamaji. |

Sorry for the mess up with my last votes my internet had a brain fart for a while.
Group C-17 Kisuke Urahara, Bleach vs. Akemi, SaiKano Voting for Kisuke Urehara I always thaught this guy was one of the more characterful guys in bleach as well as being one of the most mysterious a combination I feel is not often done well. On the other hand I feel that though Akemi was played very well in what I saw she was somewhat generic. At least in Anime terms. Group C-18 Joun the Beekeeper, The Beast Player Erin vs. Fool, Kaleido Star Voting for Joun the Beekeeper, The Beast Player Erin Group C-19 Straight Cougar, sCRYed vs. Doug, Kurau Phantom Memory Voting for Straight Cougar, sCRYed A closer round for me than I thaught from what I saw of doug in the clips I looked up made me kinda want to watch the series. However I gotta go with Cougar as I feel he is the more unique and interesting character. Group C-20 Myoga, Inuyasha vs. Tomoyo Daidouji, Cardcaptor Sakura Voting for Tomoyo Daidouji, Cardcaptor Sakura I thaught her interaction with the main cast and her relationship with the protagonist was on a different level than myoji who mainly seems to be a source of cheap gags in Inuyasha. Group C-21 Sakae Jinnouchi, Summer Wars vs. Maestro Stresemann, Nodame Cantible Voting for Maestro Stresemann, Nodame Cantible Not much in between these two for me but the positive arguments for the maestro have swayed me. Group C-22 Hiko Seijiro, Ruroni Kenshin vs. Rakushun, The Twelve Kingdoms Voting for Rakushun, The Twelve Kingdoms Bit of a no brainer for me here after just having finished watching the twelve kingdoms. And there are no more episodes its not fair! (starts howling and beating his keyboard like a manchild) Anyway he was a great mentor/friend/confidant to many of the characters in the story and is the voice of honest to goodness common sense in the series. Also seeing a human/beast hybrid potrayed in Anime without ears and tail being it's only distinguishing feature AND devoid of double D pudding filled breasts and a dental floss bikini was a novelty in of itself. Not that they aren't awesome in their own right. Group C-23 Gilliam II, Outlaw Star vs. Mao, Darker Than Black franchise Voting for Mao, Darker Than Black franchise While I did like Gilliam as he did the whole snotty robot thing quite well I have to acknowledge that Mao played a greater roll in proceedings. I can sort of see where people are coming from as well in a show with loads of great supporting characters why is Outlaw Star represented by Gilliam II for gods sake? C'mon I am sure someone must have nominated either Aisha,Suzuka or even Fred Lowe. Group C-24 Kamaji, Spirited Away vs. Wakaba Tsukishima, Cross Game Voting for Wakaba Tsukishima, Cross Game Had to agonise over this one while Kamaji I feel deserves another win for his cool factor I simply cant deny Wakaba advancement because of it as she has a far greater impact on the plot than he does. Group C-17
Akemi, SaiKano Akemi's death scene is impressive even in a series that lays waste to your emotional stability, and that says something. Surely a casual show cannot match that. Group C-18 Joun the Beekeeper, The Beast Player Erin I honestly haven't watched either show. According to the Wikipedia entry (and the show being on my to-watch list) Joun gets my vote. Group C-19 Doug, Kurau Phantom Memory Honestly? The other one's name is just too ridiculous. And judging by some arguments Doug plays a very important role in a great series. Group C-20 Myoga, Inuyasha Ga-myo!~ He's the better flea. Group C-21 Maestro Stresemann, Nodame Cantible It has been argued in the ANN review that Sakae is one of the most important characters in the movie, and I will quite agree. That she serves as a reminder of that old-style network of contacts. However, because of that (and her magical connections to just about every important person in Japan) I find her less believable than Maestro Stresemann. Not to mention that Milch has more charm and on top of that is a great comedy relief character. Group C-22 Rakushun, The Twelve Kingdoms I'm dying to see how the history of the Twelve Kingdoms evolved, and what happened to Rakushun, because honestly he was one of the most likeable characters in the series (in the beginning more so than Yoko). He's one of those supporting characters without whom the show is just not the same. There was definitely some chemistry there between him and Yoko, it's such a pity that the series was cut... Group C-23 Mao, Darker Than Black franchise I don't even see what the ship's computer is doing here. Sure, he was funny, but Aisha Clanclan for example left a much stronger impression. Group C-24 Wakaba Tsukishima, Cross Game As much as I'd like to vote against a sports series (yes, yes, I'm biased against those, too, especially so when they involve incomprehensible sports from overseas), my conscience doesn't permit it. It looks like this Wakaba plays a much more important role in the show. |
