Why not?

The name means light-bearer, at it is used to refer to the planet Venus. Just because some religions use the name is a different context doesn't change this meaning.

Plus, it sounds cool.

Come on. The name obviously has a giant stigma attached to it. Considering this isn't even his actual given name, and one he chose for himself, I can only assume he wanted attention or something. It would be like saying that changing your name to Stalin has nothing to do with Joseph Stalin and that he takes nothing away from the original "man of steel" meaning.

I'm amazed they had the courage to apprehend someone with such a bad-ass name. Obviously he posseses dark magical powers and/or a giant sword of some kind. And wings.

If you don't know where the word "otaku" comes from, it was originally a way to call one's household. The construction of Shanghai Expo demolished many houses, and there had been some Shanghai citizens not happy about their house being torn down. The Expo police, who had no idea about otaku culture, mistook the slogan as someone who tried to fight for their household and wanted to attract media attention at the Expo, thus he was detained.

A plain black T-shirt with no picture, word, or character.

Tell me about it. The local media call him "otaku god" (宅神), yet the only thing he's good at (as defined by Toshio Okada) would be Lord of the Ring series. He used his celebrity status to voice his personal opinions of something he has absolutely no knowledge or expertise of, such as the Polish MD degree dispute. I dare say he is the source of misconception of otakudom in Taiwan.

His fault for looking like someone who didn't want their home demolished, I guess.

Just about everything that the government can think of are "sensitive" to themselves.

Seriously, that "sensitive" word on that t-shirt doesn't look that extreme to me.

"Rebellion Army"? How is that not sensitive, if you don't know what "Otaku" means? It could easily be the equivalent of Falun Gong, or of the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists.

It's good to know that there are police forces keeping us safe from the threat of people wearing t-shirts with words that make us uncomfortable.

I'm sure everybody is safer because of this.
