Since in this market, "as much profit as possible" means "enough profit to avoid bankruptcy", yes, they probably want as much profit as possible.

For the "least amount of expense possible", you could be contradicting yourself. The least amount of expense possible and most profit possible normally do not line up. So its a gloomy picture of the market you paint if you are right, because it means that survival lies entirely in cost reduction rather than market expansion.

One part that is clearly false is calling them a big business. They are certainly not a big business at all, so they cannot be like "other" big businesses.

Anyone who wants the industry as a whole to grow and thrive of course wants them to be making a healthy profit, so that they can afford to invest in more market niches.

Its always the hope when a firm downsizes. Over the long haul, they normally end up getting the same rate of return but smaller earnings because they are a smaller company.

If the alternative is bankruptcy, though, better to downsize than go out of business.
