I do find it interesting that, of all the close matches, no one is making a big deal out of B-6 being a one-vote spread. Perhaps that's because everyone realizes that Kurz vs. Kittan could easily go either way and be fair? (And they are both highly-popular franchises, too.)

That is, indeed, my own take. To be perfectly honest, that is the kind of matchup that I prefer -- where the parties are evenly matched and everybody knows it, so there are no hard feelings afterwards, whatever the outcome.

I'm sad to see that Torioi Kiyori and Akira Ferrari aren't doing better. I think that, in both cases, they are the likely losers of their matches -- but I'm sorry that their poor showing seems to be the result of popularity contests over their anime, not the merits of the characters themselves. The most-viewed series are winning much more decisively than they should. I accept that this is to be expected, but I'd prefer to see these worthy contestants lose with some more even vote counts.

I find the current results of Match B-14 very interesting. I would have thought that Reika Mishima would be winning but Walter von Schenkopp is giving a run for her money.

I'm not terribly surprised. LotGH is always a popular option in these tournaments, or at least there are always a number of vocal fans, and Walter had 6 nominations despite being from a series ranked only 952 in popularity (~650 people have seen), while Reika had a net total of 3 nominations while being from the 82nd ranked series (~4600 people have seen).

I voted for Akira Ferrari but am not sure she's really such a strong supporting character, she's sort of the tough version of Alicia...
Actually I was wondering if anyone would have attempted to nominate Alicia Florence in the tourney. I wasn't going to because I'm not through all of the series, but think about it, IS she a main character? She has a ton of screen time because of her relationship to the main characters but she really fills the same role as Akira and Athena and storylines are never really about her, she's just an idol and mentor to Akari and the other two girls, possibly the only other two that really count as main characters. I think that might have been a missed opportunity, should have mentioned it during the nominations.

Familiarity is almost inevitably going to be the deciding factor, particularly at this point in time, but I've also tried to take certain arguments into account regarding some characters that sound interesting yet are otherwise completely unknown to me, for the sake of giving them a fair shot.

B-11 is a good example.

I'd be expected to vote for Cornelia, considering she did receive my support during the nominations phase, but I'm willing to try something different.

Yashima, Kamichu!

Awww. I hate to vote against Yashima. He was one of the best characters in Kamichu!, and added some much needed life to an otherwise pretty languid series. Nevertheless, Shikamaru is a real bright spot in Naruto. So much so that when I was following the show on TV it got to the point that I was only really interested in the episodes where Shikamaru made an appearance.

Of all the match ups in this round, I feel the most strongly about this one. I even like Tatiana and think she plays an important side role in Last Exile, but there is just no comparison between her and Spoor.

Admiral Spoor

Misaki Kirihara, Darker Than Black franchise

Round 1 Group B is now closed.

Results are as follows:

B-1: Balalaika def. Elfriede 29-2
B-2: November 11 def. Akira Ferrari 22-9
B-3: Franz d'Epinay def. Dryden Fassa 26-5
B-4: Shihouin Yoruichi def. Fred Lou 25-6
B-5: Dr. Reichwein def. Jack Vessalius 25-6
B-6: Kurz Weber outlasts Kittan Bachika 18-13
B-7: Shikamaru def. Yashima 24-7
B-8: Roy Focker def. Toya Kinomoto 23-8
B-9: Ichiro Mihara def. Kanami Yuta 19-12
B-10: Winry Rockbell stomps Hiroshi Uchiyamada 29-2
B-11: Cornelia li Britannia scrapes by Shuichi Natori 17-14
B-12: Hosaka comes from behind to def. Komui Lee 17-14
B-13: Leopold Scorpse def. Kurotowa 23-8
B-14: Reika Mishima def. Walter von Schenkopp 16-15 in a final-vote-decided nailbiter.
B-15: Admiral Spoor sends Tatiana Wisla home 18-13
B-16: Misaki Kirihara def. Kiyori Torioi 22-9 despite a late surge by the latter.

So several matches did stay in contention to the end. Based on nomination voting, the only significant upset here is November 11 (2 votes) over Akira Ferrari (6 votes) by a big margin, although Reika over Walter is a more minor upset. (And can you really even call it an upset since RahXephon's greater name recognition helps balance out Walter's nomination advantage?) This sets up some interesting match-ups for next round, too; Yoruichi vs. Franz looks particularly juicy.

Partly in response to some comments made about a lack of sufficient arguments in some matches, I am instituting a small policy change for next Group. Please make sure you read the opening notes in Group 1 C's set-up post!

Round 1 Group C is now closed.

Results can be seen here.

And we’re going to try something a little different this time. At the moment I’m only planning the following to be an experiment for this group for this round, but if I like how it works it will continue and be the new standard.

For this time around, all voters will be required to make arguments in at least one of the matches. Choose one where you actually know both characters (preferably) and/or one where you feel especially passionate about one character winning. Just saying “by the Guide” or “per so-and-so’s arguments” will not be acceptable for this.

And really, it’s only one match I’m requiring this for, so it shouldn’t be too burdensome. You are, of course, completely welcome to do more.

Group C-1

vs.
Chourou, Hare + Guu

Group C-2

Time to get things whirling...

Match C-1: Kisuke Urahara (Bleach)

Match C-2: Akemi (Saikano)
spoiler[Her scene confessing her love to Shuji before her death is still one of the most painful moments I've seen in anime.] Beyond that, Akemi does decent work in her role of trying to keep Shuji and Chise's relationship steady spoiler[despite the sacrifice of her personal desires for wanting to be with Shuji.]

Match C-3: Joun the Beekeeper (Beast Player Erin)

Match C-4: Fool (Kaleido Star)

Match C-5: Straight Cougar (sCRYed)

Match C-6: Doug (Kurau Phantom Memory)
Provides enough aid to Kurau and Christmas to keep them out of enemy hands.

Match C-7: Myoga (Inuyasha)
Beyond battling foes as an ally beside Kenshin, I don't really recall much else Saito has done to contribute to his series. Myoga, on the other hand, provides both comic relief and advise to Inuyasha during his frequent appearances in the series.

Match C-8: Tomoya Daidouji (Card Captor Sakura)
The definite top-runner for this bracket. Smile

Match C-9: Sakae Jinnouchi (Summer Wars)

Match C-10: Maestro Stresemann (Nodame Cantabile)
Serves as both comic relief and inspirational figure for both Nodame and Chiaki's musical potential. The description for him doesn't really do much to explain the major contributions he offers to the franchise as he encourages Chiaki to have patience and seek enjoyment out of being an orchestra conductor and during Nodame Cantabile: Finale, spoiler[he offers Nodame the biggest musical opportunity she experienced within the series.]

Match C-11: Noboru Yamaguchi (Cromartie High School)

Match C-12: Rakashun (Twelve Kingdoms)

Match C-13: Kyosuke Irie (Higurashi franchise)

Match C-14: Hitomi Kashiwa (Welcome to the NHK)

Match C-15: Miss Yoshinoya (Hidamari Sketch)

Match C-16: Wakaba Tsukishima (Cross Game)
Beyond death, her influence on the lives of Aoba, Koh and Akaishi is strong throughout the series towards their goal of making it to Koshien.

Darn, Walter barely didn't move on!
Hmm, there's only one match this time around where I know both candidates, C-13, so that might be a prime place to argue.

C-1: Kisuke Urahara
C-2: Akemi
Eh, Cologne spent way too much time and energy trying to get Ranma hitched to yet another person he doesn't wanna get hitched to. She's fun and all, but only to a point.
C-3: Joun the Beekeeper
C-4: Fool
Man I love Fool, he's hilarious, but also helpful when the time comes.
C-5: Straight Cougar
Did they come up with his name by mashing two English words together? This name might even be worse than "Leopard Solid"! I'm going based on the guide here, I just wanted to point out how ridiculous I found his name.
C-6: Prof. Itsuki Keizo
I've read one volume of Moyashimon and seen all of Kurau and I already think the professor is better. Unfortunately, I'm not the person to ask for a major support argument, I've only read one volume of the manga, but knowledgeable and crazy prof, they're my favorite type!
C-7: Myoga
C-8: Tomoyo Daidouji
She wants to be helpful. REALLY wants to be helpful. But she'd do it even if Sakura wasn't so dense as to not notice her advances 'cus she's such a sweet cousin! (was she as blatant in the anime?)
C-9: Mr. Cat
Well, aside from my avatar making it obvious that I'm voting him? He really is the best man-sized cat ever in an anime and even if everything in his life revolves around ballet or trying to get married, he does dispense some inadvertent good advice and his motivations are very effective. And as a comic relief type of character...well he's a man-sized talking cat who still does cat things at random when he's frustrated, except it's somehow funnier when he does it because he's a man-sized talking cat. Runnin' around the floor in a brown paper bag...
C-10: Maestro Stresemann
C-11: Hiko Seijiro
C-12: Coach Ohta
C-13: Dr. Irie
Gyarg, this is a tough one, see, I really do like them both and I wouldn't be upset to see either one move on. On one hand, Gilliam is the most awesome ship ever, he alerts the crew whenever someone is trying to break in, prevents people from breaking in as best he can. On the other..., well he never can leave the ship, and man does it take a lot of maintain him. Then we've got Dr. Irie whom everyone loves and who actually knows what's going on because he is trusted enough to be told. Yeah, he kinda has spoiler[Satoshi Houjou] hidden away and didn't tell any of the mains, but he still only did it out of concern for spoiler[Satoshi to try and help him get better eventually]. And regardless who hired him, he helps the people who need it and he does research on spoiler[Hinamizawa Syndrome] so he can help the town, unlike spoiler[Mio Takano who wants to destroy Hinamizawa]. Soooo, because of Dr. Irie's support for what's right given the situation he's in, I give the nod to him, even if Gilliam is an epic ship, he does rather do things out of being a machine sometimes.
C-14: Hitomi Kashiwa
C-15: Kamaji
C-16: Vanilla

Group C-1
Kisuke Urahara, Bleach
vs.
Chourou, Hare + Guu

Chourou's a neat character, what with his chest hair obsession and all, but he is outclassed in every possible way here. Kisuke has a bigger role, a bigger impact, and is at least as entertaining in his antics.

Group C-2
Cologne, Ranma ½
vs.
Akemi, SaiKano

I'm going to admit a bit of partiality here in going with Akemi, but I also think she's got the merits to win this one. She played a critical role in bringing the leads together and backing each of them up (and at great personal expense), and her bow-out is pretty potent stuff. She may not go far but she deserves to win at least one round.

Group C-3
Armblast, Kiddy Grade
vs.
Joun the Beekeeper, The Beast Player Erin

If you're a Joun supporter, impress me with your arguments. Otherwise I'm sticking with Armblast, who's a pretty cool dude and plays an important role early on. (He has some good lines, too: "You can go ahead and shoot me, but I think you'll wish that you had saved the bullet.")

Group C-4
Fool, Kaleido Star
vs.
Kokone Takatsu, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou franchise

Don't know either, but based on the Guide entries Kokone impressed me more. Arguments, please?

Group C-5
Akira Kogami, Lucky Star
vs.
Straight Cougar, sCRYed

Akira is delightful with her radical shifts in personality, but Straight Cougar can equal that with his own fast-talking, speed-obsessed eccentricities and comedy value and he contributes much, much more to the series' main plot, too. He offers so much more as a supporting character than what Akira does that this match shouldn't be close.

Group C-6
Doug, Kurau Phantom Memory
vs.
Professor Itsuki Keizo, Moyashimon

Doug plays a large and rather critical supporting role in helping Kurau and Christmas to be together. I'll have to see some pretty strong arguments the other way to convince me to vote otherwise.

Group C-7
Hajime Saito, Samurai X/Ruroni Kenshin titles (some)
vs.
Myoga, Inuyasha

While Inuyasha would be watchable without Myoga, it would certainly lose some of its charm. He just has too many good running jokes to deny and helps out a little too much to ignore.

Group C-8
Tomoyo Daidouji, Cardcaptor Sakura
vs.
Gouzaburou Seto, My Bride is a Mermaid

Based on arguments from past tournaments (especially the Best Duo tournament), Tomoyo seems like a strong choice here.

Group C-9
Mr. Cat, Princess Tutu
vs.
Sakae Jinnouchi, Summer Wars

There was some question in the nomination round about whether Sakae's role was a little too big or not, but even setting that aside, I find it hard to vote against Mr. Cat. He added so much extra character to that series.

Group C-10
Maestro Stresemann, Nodame Cantible
vs.
Nobuko “Nobu” Ishihara, Lovely Complex

CHANGE:Based on arguments, I have decided to switch to Nobu instead, as she seems to be under-supported in this match-up given her merits.

Group C-11
Hiko Seijiro, Ruroni Kenshin
vs.
Noboru Yamaguchi, Cromartie High School

Sounds like Hiko was more important in relation to his series, so he gets my vote for now.

Group C-12
Rakashun, The Twelve Kingdoms
vs.
Kouichiro “Coach” Ohta, Gunbuster

This is a sad match-up for me. Coach is so important to the lead heroines in Gunbuster that he really deserves to advance a round or two, but he's up against a character which can match all of his strengths and exceed them. Rakashun does so much to assist and put two of the series' major characters on the correct paths, and is such a neat character in his own right, that he has to be considered a top contender. (Being one of the most popular characters from a popular-with-fans series certainly doesn't hurt, either.)

Group C-13
Kyosuke Irie, When They Cry - Higurashi franchise
vs.
Gilliam II, Outlaw Star

While I don't find Kyosuke to be a particularly strong choice, Gilliam is a weaker one. Let that barely-scraped-by character get the first-round exit it deserves.

Group C-14
Mao, Darker Than Black franchise
vs.
Hitomi Kashiwa, Welcome to the NHK

Hitomi has an important role in her series, but Mao's is more important, he does more in his series, and he has considerably more frequent appearances. The comedy bit with him in the first-series bonus episode was golden.

Group C-15
Kamaji, Spirited Away
vs.
Miss Yoshinoya, Hidamari Sketch

I know Kamaji and don't know the other one, but the description of Miss Yoshinoya amuses me far too much to deny. Besides, while Kamaji plays an important role in his movie, he's hardly a powerhouse choice.

Group C-16
Wakaba Tsukishima, Cross Game
vs.
Vanilla, Kaiba

A true match-up between two little-seen series! (Kaiba is in the 1100s on "seen" rankings, while CG is in the 1300s.) I actually have seen one of these series, though, and can assure that there is only one correct choice here: Wakaba. Yeah, the knock could be made against her that she only appears in flashbacks after the first episode, but she is still mentioned or shown in nearly every one of the series' 50 episodes, so she is, in a sense, present throughout. Also, I cannot think of another supporting character in this tournament who has a more pervasive impact on her series than Wakaba does. It takes a pretty special character to so thoroughly impose her will, presence, and dreams on those around her even years after her passing and to engender such love by those once close to her that one character spoiler[still buys birthday gifts for her every year even after she dies].

Well, there isn’t a match where I know both but I’ll put in my two cents worth on someone.

Group C-1

Kisuke Urahara, Bleach

Kisuke is a great supporting character because he helps out the Gang when they need special training, supplies or moral support. We also find out that he is the reason behind what is happening in the Soul Society arc. Something that he made and thought that he’d hidden away has been found out and is coming back to bite him and the Soul Society in the patootie.

Actually I was wondering if anyone would have attempted to nominate Alicia Florence in the tourney.

I didn't nominate Alicia because the girls seemed to swoon over her, rather than really learn from what she had to say. Granted, Alicia had a different take on situations, but there's no disputing Akira's strict admonishments had an impact on the girls.

Aika spent most of her time wishing to be Alicia, whereas Akira spent time telling her why that's foolish.

That's the best example I can use to explain why Akira got the nomination and Alicia did not.

I didn't count any of the mentors as leading characters, so this wasn't a factor in my nomination omissions.

At the beginning he doesn’t make an impression of a sympathetic guy but he proves to be capable of making a great sacrifice in order to save the main character. His final scene is one of the most powerful moments in Kaiba.
