FUNi's specials only cover 1993-2000.
Dunno about Conan, but FUNi seems to be done w/ Lupin. I'm personally hoping TMS will see the light and upload those broadcast specials of Shin Lupin on CR already. [Maybe we can also get the "banned" eps which spoof certain nameless superheroes, while we're at it.  Though, considering the litigation going on over Supes right now, I actually think it's better to put those eps out now, when TMS doesn't have to worry about getting sued, since the rights might change in a year. ]
Conan appears to be doing alright, but the newest Lupin has been from Discotek. I'm personally hoping that, if S23 is willing to give Golgo a shot, Lupin vs. Conan is fair game.
But what about Cartoon All-Stars To the Rescue?

The world just ended. Next up: the world comes back from the dead to rehash the "NO! NO! NO!" people didn't get a chance to say before their life was extinguished by reason. I like this week's question. I think I'm going to answer it before the world ends again. |

Fantastic answer on the fan sub question, Brian. I especially loved your pointing out that - gee! - a lot of fansubs stink! And scanlations are even worse; there are a few groups out there who do truly good translation work, but by and large they're not the ones doing the licensed material. The scanlations you read of Shounen Jump and other popular material that come out within a day of the chapter in Japan? Don't trust them!
Part of the problem with fansubs, though, is that they've become increasingly DVD-like. The video has a higher encoding, and you can remove the subtitles (soft-subs). That latter also impact the Japanese market, as Japanese downloaders can just turn off the subtitles. Now, don't get me wrong, on the handful of things that have an ice cube's chance in hell of getting licensed, I appreciate higher quality fansubs, but it makes the temptation to not pay money stronger. |

To the whole fansub-dub issue, I do download anime, guilty, but I also buy anime. I think in the financial sense, I do have a degree in mgt w/ a concentration in accounting, I should buy to keep the companies in business(unless your company is like Goldman Sucks). For example Ouran loved it when I downloaded it, heard it got licenced, got excited, saw who was cast, was happy and bought both boxsets the day they came out. I use fansubs to see what is out there, if it gets licenced I will keep my downloaded version until it comes out. But there are some shows that might not get licenced. Giant Killing is a great show, but I am a soccer fan so it was a win for me, but I highly doubt it will come to America. Haruhi season 2 licenced, will buy it. There older anime fans like myself need to tell the younger ones, "Ya getting anime for free is great but not buying the English project will shut down the American studios and ultimatly will end all the conventions that take place. The reason we have conventions is because of the licencing of anime. If you guys want to keep going to them buy some anime." I know studios don't pay the bills for conventions, but it is because of our passion for it back in 1990's that got them licenced, studios opened up and more and more conventions were founded.

allright I'll confess, I fansub most anime I watch, the other stuff I watch I see it on t.v and on stuff like hulu.com
I know I"m wrong, I feel the guilt. but man, those dvd boxsets are incredibly expensive. I'm a starving college student here anime creaters 
I used to buy dvds back when I was in high school and stuff but appearantly I was buying bootlegs, I swear I had no idea. *sigh* im gonna go slink back into the darkness now |

Waaaaaah! I would kill for a high quality remake of Rurouni Kenshin... preferably with the voice actors back; perhaps the only dub ever that I prefer the English to Japanese sub... And, of course, I would happily kill anyone who even tried to make a cheap money grubbing knockoff remake travesty...
Re: fansubs/scanlations, I feel your pain. I 'discovered' the anime and manga world online, and still preview most if not all of every series via nasty illegal free versions online, which I quite appreciate and have no issues with quality... however, I also sink hundreds... more like thousands of dollars a year into legitimate licensed anime and manga of series that I like for the pure pleasure of filling up my overcrowded shelves and supporting artists that I love. However, screw Tokyopop etc. who keep losing licenses and NOT FINISHING FRIGGIN' SERIES! It's positively painful paying through the nose for overpriced poorly translated legal manga, only to have the series dropped 1-2 volumes before the end! And re:industry, I'm extending my degree by 2 years in order to cram as much Japanese into my brain as possible and get a job as a manga editor at either veteran giant Viz or promising up-and-comer Yen Press and help turn the industry around. Too friggin' many Kanji to learn, but someone's gotta get in there and protect the material... ...and please, quality remakes of Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun, or even, dare I say it, Fushigi Yuugi, bring it on! |

On the subject of Lupin III, it seems that Funimation stopped trying to make it work in the American market, and I can't blame them, but it is disappointing. I'd really like to see more Lupin stuff released over here, even if the franchise is such a mixed bag.
When it comes to remakes, I'd hardly put Dragon Ball Kai and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood in the same boat. One is a from the ground up remake of the story of the original manga, with completely new (and beautiful) animation and soundtrack, a complete series that stands on its own. The other is a cut-and-paste glorified clip show lazily cobbled together for the benefit of reselling old DBZ merchandise by slapping a new logo on it. One is a remake, the other is a marketing tool. Another thing is, whether it's the original manga's story or not, I hardly felt Brotherhood was necessary. I appreciate it, of course, it's excellent, but not necessary. An anime does not have to be a 1:1 adaptation of its source material if it's based on a manga. That's what you have the manga for. Nor is it necessary to go back and do it all over again, as if to say you screwed up the first time (which is NOT the reason why Brotherhood was done, trust me, it was done because it will turn a profit). Reboots can be quite good, but I'm really kind of tired of the industry retreading old ground instead of coming up with new things. |

I download torrents and then I buy what I like if the DVDs are available. It's the same with anime soundtracks, I try to buy all the ones I love and am disappointed when I can't find a copy.
Of course I have friends who I offer to loan DVDs of anime I know they've been meaning to see and they're aghast that I actually bought them. Purchasing products you enjoy, how quaint!

I resent that statement! I loved Cobra when I first saw it two years ago (15 years of age) and I'm just boarding the Golgo express (at 17 years of age) Dear, let us not have another fan sub debate. But I agree with speed scanlations. They are incredibly dodgy. Don't bother reading them - they really do suck. |

I've seen Japanese people streaming foreign subbed shows more than anything, the availability of RAWs being naturally high on Japanese networks. Hosts like megaupload seem to be popular as well; I've been known to have mega-wars trying to get a foot in the non-premium user door in my building (we all share the same IP for some reason). I think part of the problem with DVD is despite even the best kind of mastering it's held back by MPEG-2, which is old enough to watch most DVDs at this point. I asked Justin Sevakis before why people didn't do just really nice SD Blu-rays with the lossless audio and he claimed it was better or at least good enough to upscale for consumer hardware. In retrospect I'm still convinced HD-audio/SD-video is better because a) many fans seem to have no problem with DVD quality anyway, b) the atrocious level of upscaling people are willing to call an improvement over the DVD indicates an inability to distinguish between good and bad video, and c) you'd end up with a product that's not only better now from an A/V perspective and a capacitative one (2-3 dual layer BDs for an average 24 episode show? Maybe less if they used even more layers but that'll be the day...) but one that will not be dated by poor video upscaling. I would cry but there aren't any tears left. |

If they really want to stop internet piracy, they need to approach it in a more reasonable sense. They should mention how pirated torrents run the risk of exposure to viruses and Trojan horses infecting their PC's and all the other problems that come from going through the back door (no very sick pun intended).
Show them that piracy leads to scurvy, otherwise you just make them all look like Johnny Depp. |

Although I don't doubt that some pirated copies of anime turn into sales down the road, I can't imagine it's very many. If 10% of anime fans who download torrents buy DVDs of 10% of the anime that they download, that doesn't come out to a whole lot (and I wouldn't be surprised if the percentages are even lower than that).

Why would you want a remake of Fushigi Yuugi? I was under the impression that the original was already ridiculously faithful to the manga.
Oh hell yeah is that true. But... there's anti-virus software, plus sites that are actually relatively reliable, etc. etc. There are all sorts of ways to get around the malware issue, and people will take the risk to avoid spending money. Besides, as with other risky behavior, who ever thinks it'll actually happen to them? I don't know the one solution to fixing the fansub system, but it would sure help if those who used fansubs would take more responsibility and 1) always seek out legal means of watching anime first, 2) not distribute licensed material, 3) not keep anything they don't intend to watch again, and 4) buy anything they want to keep if it becomes available. |
