WOW
What is it about Ponyo that's getting it better sales than any other Miyazaki film?? Heck, it even got into the megaplex in my town, not just the art theater. |

34%, that's pretty good for a format that is supposed to be dying.

I would attribute to better publicity than previous films. Howl's Moving Castle opened in my local Megaplex but I only knew about it because I saw the poster outside with the show times, other than that not a single TV Sport or trailer was ran. Ponyo on the other hand Disney gave it much better coverage with spots running at decent times and coverage on The Disney Channel. |

That's really good to hear. I got it from Target, where I work, using a Disney Coupon and got it for $15.00. That's hard to beat, plus it came with a DVD version of it too.

Shhh... It's dead. Dead, dead, dead. At least that's what I hear. Sales figures that more than double each year and player prices having dropped drastically don't matter. The fact that the no one's figured out how to actually generate a profit off of streaming and downloads doesn't matter. Streaming/downloads are the future! Actually generating a profit is passé. |

Yeah, I was able to get the same price at Borders myself. Great news and glad we were able to help contribute! Even sold the cashier who said "She isn't into anime". |

I paid $30 for my BluRay copy at Zellers. I didn't feel like shopping around.
Say what you will about Ponyo vis-à-vis other Miyazaki films, the backgrounds on the BluRay look like they were painted by Miyazaki directly onto my TV screen, which is just a 26" wide 720p LCD. I am in awe as to how great the backgrounds look on my miniscule (by HDTV standards) set. |

For future reference Tenchi:
http://forum.blu-ray.com/movie-tv-deals/132981-upcoming-disney-10-00-coupon-links-old-dogs-princess-frog-5-00-toystory-deal.html Most of the Disney titles come with these coupons that usually make the blu-ray about the same price as the DVD. In the case of Princess and the Frog, the blu-ray comes with a DVD and a digital copy, but with the coupon, it's only $1 more than the DVD by itself (at least at Best Buy). |

I've still got to get around to seeing this. It's nice to see it so high up though.
I think it was that and the fact that Ponyo looks more kid friendly as a whole than his other films it's a tad more cartoonish than say Howl's or Spirited Away. |

Ah, I see. I guess I don't watch enough Disney-affiliated television to realize that it got a good push.
It was just plain gorgeous on the big screen. You sort of forget how it doesn't make much sense when it's just blowing you away with its beauty. |

Great news for Ponyo, hope it means another little wave of Ghibli movies'll pop up soon, and excellent news for Halo Legends-still have to pick it up myself, but it's fantastic, and hopefully means good news for more anime being produced by Warners.
Re:Disney/Ponyo- when I was at Disney World recently, commercials for it played on their info channel, merchandise for Ghibli stuff was heavily pushed at their Japanese pavillion's store[usually a small amount is there, but this time they had a WHACK of stuff], and it opened in wide release rather then a slow art film climb. It's a very cheerful, wellreviewed kids movie, so it's nice to see them do well with it. |

I wish I could watch my copy of Ponyo on Blu-Ray. But for reasons I can not figure out it simply will not play on my Blu-Ray player. It goes through all the menus, plays the previews and the special features, but when I play the movie itself my player says 'waiting' on it's display and the screen goes blank. Eventually the disc stops spinning and it just holds there with the blank screen forever. It's not a defective disc, as I exchanged it 3 times with the same problem every time. Does anyone know what the problem might be? And yes, I've upgraded my player's firmware. Could it be that my cheapie Pplayer just can't play a bluray for some reason?
I really want to watch this movie, but refuse to bite the bullet and just watch it on DVD/standard-def. |

What's a Pplayer?
If you've already dl'd the latest firmware, and you don't have another blu-ray player/PS3 to try it on, the only option you have is to call the manufacture and ask if they're player is having a problem with that specific title, and if so, are they working on a fix. |
